What are visa biometrics?
Biometrics are personal physical identifiers used to establish and protect an applicant’s identity. In the usual visa application centre process, they consist of fingerprints and a live digital photograph of the face.
They are linked to the passport and biographical details in the application. They support identity and suitability checks; they do not prove that the applicant meets the CAS, financial, English or genuine-student requirements.
Why does UKVI collect biometrics?
Home Office guidance says fingerprints and facial images help fix a person’s biographical details to a verified identity and support checks against immigration and criminality records. They also help detect the use of multiple identities.
The process protects the applicant as well as the immigration system. A consultant cannot enrol biometrics on the student’s behalf because the applicant’s physical identity must be captured or verified through the instructed route.
Two ways to prove identity
An applicant is normally told either to use the UK Immigration: ID Check app or to attend a visa application centre. Eligibility depends on the passport, device, application route and UKVI system instructions.
Do not book an appointment before the application asks for one, and do not force an app route because it seems faster. Follow the path shown after the Student visa form is submitted.
Using the UK Immigration: ID Check app
Some people with an eligible biometric passport and compatible smartphone can scan their identity document and confirm identity through the free app. They normally do not attend an in-person appointment when the app process succeeds.
The app can be used on a trusted family member’s or friend’s compatible phone if allowed by the instructions. The student’s account and identity remain their own; remove personal information from a borrowed device after completing the official process.
If the app cannot be used
If the applicant was instructed to use the app but cannot complete it, GOV.UK says an appointment at a visa application centre may be required. Use the route provided by the application or UKVI support.
Do not submit repeated applications or create multiple UKVI accounts merely because a phone cannot scan the passport chip. First check device compatibility, passport condition and the official troubleshooting path.
Attending a visa application centre
Most applicants who need in-person identity verification book a VAC appointment to provide fingerprints and a photograph. The commercial operator handles appointment and document services, while UKVI decides the visa.
The VAC cannot guarantee approval, change the Immigration Rules or decide whether funds are acceptable. Treat it as an identity and document-submission service.
Finding the official centre for Nepal
Use the GOV.UK visa application centre finder and select Nepal. The current government list identifies Kathmandu as an international application point.
Follow the official provider link for the current address, opening times and booking portal. Do not rely on an old map pin, social-media phone number or agent bank account because operators and locations can change.
Apply before booking the appointment
GOV.UK states that a person must apply for the visa before making a VAC appointment. Complete the Student form, pay the required charges and continue through the account to the appointment service.
The booking should connect to the same application reference. Entering a different GWF or applicant record can separate the appointment from the submitted case.
The current 240-day attendance rule
General overseas guidance says the appointment must be booked and attended within 240 days of submitting the application. If that does not happen, the person may need to start a new application.
This is a maximum validity window, not a recommended Student visa schedule. University start dates, financial documents, CAS validity and decision time usually require much earlier attendance.
Free appointments and paid slots
GOV.UK says most VACs offer free appointments within five working days, although a standard appointment in some locations costs GBP 76.50. The booking portal shows what is available for that centre.
A paid appointment or premium lounge does not increase the chance of approval. Choose it only when the timing or service is genuinely useful.
Optional VAC services
Commercial centres can offer document scanning, courier return, assisted upload, premium facilities or flexible appointment services. These charges are separate from the Student visa fee, IHS and any government priority service.
Read the item description before paying. Self-upload can be sufficient when the official process permits it, and an expensive package does not turn weak evidence into compliant evidence.
What to take to the appointment
Follow the individual confirmation, but the core items usually include:
- Appointment confirmation
- Current passport or travel document
- Application and document-upload references
- Any original evidence specifically requested
- Evidence required for a child and responsible adult
Take only authentic documents. Preserve a complete copy of everything submitted before handing over a passport or original.
Check the passport before attendance
Confirm the passport number, name, date of birth and expiry match the online application and CAS where relevant. Check that the photograph and biographical page are clear and the passport is not badly damaged.
If a new passport was issued after the application, do not silently attend with different details. Follow UKVI instructions for reporting the change.
Upload supporting documents before the appointment
The route for uploading evidence depends on whether identity is proved through the app or VAC. GOV.UK says app users use its self-upload service, while VAC users normally upload through the commercial partner portal or can pay for an added-value scanning service.
Make each full document visible, readable and correctly oriented. Use the personalised checklist rather than an unstructured folder of every document owned.
What happens at biometric enrolment?
The applicant’s identity and appointment are checked, a live photograph is taken and fingerprints are scanned where required. Fingerprint scanning is digital and does not use ink.
The centre may also receive or check submitted documents according to the booked service. The appointment itself is not a visa interview and staff do not normally give a decision.
Fingerprint capture
Up to ten fingerprints can be enrolled from a person who is old enough and physically able. Follow staff instructions about placing each hand on the scanner.
Temporary cuts, blisters, burns or heavy henna can interfere with capture. Home Office guidance identifies these as short-term impairments, so tell the centre and follow its rescheduling or exception process rather than hiding the issue.
The live facial photograph
The image should show the whole head, use a plain neutral background, be clear, unfiltered and contain no other person or object. It must be a new live image rather than a photograph of the passport photograph.
The facial image can later appear on the eVisa and be shared with authorised organisations. Follow staff or app instructions and remove glasses or adjust clothing only as required for a valid image.
Religious and medical head coverings
UKVI appointment guidance says a person does not have to remove a head covering worn for religious or medical reasons. The face must still be captured clearly under the applicable photograph standards.
Tell staff about a medical need or disability that affects enrolment. Do not use edited photos or filters to solve a capture problem.
Children under five
A child under five must attend the appointment and have a photograph taken but does not need to provide fingerprints. The child’s application and identity still need to be connected to the correct record.
Prepare the child for a short photograph process and take the responsible adult’s documents required by the appointment instructions.
Children under sixteen
Children under 16 must attend with an adult over 18. The application should identify the responsible adult, who may need to bring photo identification and, where they are not the parent or guardian, written proof of responsibility.
Do not send a minor alone with a driver or agent who is not recorded and authorised for the appointment.
Dependants provide their own identity evidence
Each eligible dependant has a separate visa application and must prove identity. They may be instructed to use the ID Check app or attend a VAC for fingerprints and a photograph.

What if an appointment must be changed?
Use the booking provider’s official account to reschedule or cancel within its rules. Keep confirmation of the change and make sure the new date still fits the CAS, course and application timeline.
If illness or an emergency prevents attendance, notify the provider promptly and preserve evidence. Missing the appointment without action can delay or invalidate the process.
When does Student visa processing begin?
GOV.UK says processing begins after the application is submitted, identity or biometric steps are completed, and required supporting evidence is provided. Opening or paying for the form alone does not necessarily start the decision clock.

Will the passport be kept?
The process tells the applicant what happens to the passport. Some guidance says a VAC can return it on the same day; in other circumstances the centre may keep it or contact the applicant for collection.
Follow the specific centre message. Do not visit for collection before being told, and do not book international travel that requires the passport while its availability is uncertain.
What happens after the appointment?
Keep the enrolment or submission receipt and monitor the email and phone number used in the application. UKVI can request more evidence, verification or an interview before deciding.
The centre cannot provide a reliable decision date outside published service information. Check the official processing-time tool instead of paying for unofficial tracking.
Biometrics and the new eVisa system
A successful new applicant receives an eVisa, which uses the verified identity and facial image. UKVI stopped issuing vignette stickers to successful new applicants on 1 July 2026.
