Australia AQF Qualification Guide for Nepali Students

Australia AQF Qualification Guide for Nepali Students explains how the Australian Qualifications Framework organises regulated qualifications across ten levels, where Certificates, Diplomas, Bachelor, Honours, Graduate, Master and Doctoral qualifications generally sit, how level reflects learning complexity rather than course quality alone, and which CRICOS, provider, professional and visa checks remain separate. An AQF number is a comparison tool, not a guaranteed job or migration outcome.

Information checked on 24 July 2026 using current Australian Qualifications Framework and Study Australia guidance. Confirm the exact qualification title, provider registration, course registration and professional requirements before enrolment.

Understand what the AQF is

The Australian Qualifications Framework is the national policy for regulated qualifications in Australian senior secondary, VET and higher-education systems. It defines learning outcomes and qualification types.

It supports national consistency and pathways across sectors. It is not a university ranking or a list of preferred careers.

Read levels as learning complexity

AQF levels indicate the relative complexity and depth of achievement and the autonomy expected of a graduate. Level 1 has the lowest complexity and level 10 the highest.

A higher level does not mean every course is better for every student. Field, teaching, accreditation, cost and career fit remain important.

Know where the education sectors overlap

VET qualifications can range from AQF levels 1 to 8, while higher education can range from levels 5 to 10. Diploma or Associate Degree territory can therefore involve different provider and course types.

Check whether the specific program is VET or higher education and which regulator and register apply.

Recognise Certificate I at level 1

Certificate I develops basic functional knowledge and skills for initial work, community involvement or further learning. It sits at AQF level 1.

Do not assume it is a direct pathway to every Certificate II or III. Check entry and credit arrangements.

Recognise Certificate II at level 2

Certificate II supports mainly routine work in a defined context and further learning. It sits at AQF level 2.

Compare industry outcomes and training package rules, not only the certificate number.

Recognise Certificate III at level 3

Certificate III involves theoretical and practical knowledge for skilled work or further learning. Graduates apply a broader range of skills in varied contexts.

Some trades and occupations use Certificate III pathways, but employment or licensing requirements are profession-specific.

Recognise Certificate IV at level 4

Certificate IV provides theoretical and practical knowledge for specialised or skilled work and further learning. It sits at AQF level 4.

It is not equivalent to a Bachelor degree merely because the course title includes management or leadership.

Recognise Diploma at level 5

A Diploma sits at AQF level 5 and develops specialised knowledge and skills for skilled or paraprofessional work and further learning.

A Diploma can support a pathway into higher education, but credit depends on the receiving provider’s policy and agreement.

Recognise Advanced Diploma and Associate Degree

Advanced Diploma and Associate Degree qualifications generally sit at AQF level 6. They develop broad knowledge and skills for highly skilled or paraprofessional work and further learning.

These qualification types can come from different sectors. Check provider registration and the exact award title.

Recognise Bachelor Degree at level 7

A Bachelor Degree sits at AQF level 7 and develops broad, coherent knowledge and skills for professional work or further learning.

Study Australia describes standard Bachelor programs as commonly three to five years full time, but the exact CRICOS duration and course structure control the student’s plan.

Understand AQF level 8 qualifications

Bachelor Honours, Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma qualifications generally sit at AQF level 8. They involve advanced knowledge and skills for professional or highly skilled work and further learning.

These titles serve different purposes and volumes of learning. A Graduate Certificate is not the same award as a Bachelor Honours degree.

Recognise Master Degree at level 9

A Master Degree sits at AQF level 9 and develops specialised knowledge and skills for research, professional practice or further learning.

Programs can be coursework, research or extended forms. Compare qualification title, entry requirements, duration and professional recognition.

Recognise Doctoral Degree at level 10

A Doctoral Degree sits at AQF level 10, the highest level. It requires systematic and critical understanding and specialised research skills that contribute original knowledge or professional practice.

A doctorate is not simply a longer Master degree. Check supervision, research environment, milestones and funding.

Do not assign a level to Senior Secondary

The Senior Secondary Certificate of Education is an AQF qualification type but is not located at a numbered AQF level. States and territories use names such as HSC, VCE, QCE, WACE or SACE.

ATAR is a tertiary admission rank, not an AQF qualification level.

Use AQF for pathway planning

The AQF supports pathways into and through formal qualifications and recognition of prior learning. A student may move from VET to higher education or between related qualifications.

Credit is not automatic. Obtain a written articulation or credit decision from the receiving provider.

Check the exact qualification title

Compare the award title in marketing, CRICOS entry, offer, CoE and provider register. Terms such as certificate of completion or professional certificate may not indicate an AQF qualification.

Ask who issues the final award and whether the provider is legally authorised to issue it.

Verify CRICOS for student-visa study

An education provider and course must be registered on CRICOS to enrol a student for study in Australia on a student visa. AQF status alone does not prove CRICOS registration.

Match provider code, course code, campus, duration and title before paying.

Use the sector register as well

Check TEQSA for higher-education provider and course accreditation information. Check training.gov.au and ASQA context for VET provider status and scope.

Each register answers a different question. Save dated search evidence.

Separate professional accreditation

An AQF qualification may still need accreditation or recognition by a professional body for regulated work. Course and profession requirements can differ by state and occupation.

Check the current accrediting or registration body before enrolment, especially for health, teaching, engineering and other regulated fields.

Separate AQF from overseas equivalence

The AQF itself does not assess a Nepali qualification for Australian equivalence and does not assess an Australian qualification for Nepalese professional recognition.

Use the receiving provider, employer, professional body or authorised assessment service for the specific purpose.

Separate AQF from visas and migration

The AQF does not provide immigration advice or decide visa eligibility. A course at a particular level does not guarantee a student visa, graduate visa or skilled migration result.

Check current Home Affairs requirements and obtain authorised advice for individual circumstances.

AQF comparison mistakes

  • Choosing a course only because it has a higher level
  • Confusing ATAR with an AQF level
  • Assuming every Diploma guarantees Bachelor credit
  • Treating AQF level as professional accreditation
  • Skipping CRICOS and provider-register checks
  • Assuming an overseas qualification has automatic equivalence
  • Believing a qualification level guarantees a visa or job

AQF course-check workflow

  1. Name the award. Record the exact qualification title.
  2. Check the level. Understand complexity and outcomes.
  3. Verify CRICOS. Match provider, course and campus.
  4. Check the sector. Use TEQSA or the VET registers.
  5. Review pathways. Obtain written credit information.
  6. Check accreditation. Verify profession-specific requirements.
  7. Assess fit. Compare cost, duration, learning and career goals.
