Australia Research Degree Guide for Nepali Students

Australia Research Degree Guide for Nepali Students explains how to choose a higher degree by research, identify a supervisor, prepare a proposal, document research readiness, compare funding and understand current Research Training Program and Student visa rules. Research admission and scholarship selection are separate decisions, and each university publishes its own process.

Information checked on 24 July 2026 using current Study Australia, Department of Education, TEQSA and Department of Home Affairs guidance. Scholarship rates, visa settings and university deadlines change; verify them before applying.

Understand Australian research qualifications

Study Australia describes postgraduate research pathways that include honours, masters by research or a masters with a substantial thesis, and doctoral research. For Research Training Program purposes, the eligible HDR categories are accredited research masters and research doctorate degrees.

A coursework masters with a small project is not automatically an HDR. Read the official course structure and ask the graduate research office how the course is classified.

Choose the degree by research content

A research masters can build advanced method and independent research experience, while a doctorate requires a larger original contribution. Compare the expected thesis, milestones, duration, examination and any coursework or placement components.

Select the level that matches prior research preparation and the question that can be completed with available time, data, facilities and supervision.

Define a focused research area

Begin with a problem, population, system or evidence gap rather than a broad subject name. Read recent peer-reviewed work and identify what is known, uncertain and feasible to investigate.

A proposal should show a defensible question, relevant literature, suitable method, likely contribution and realistic scope. It should not claim results before the study is done.

Find institutions with genuine research fit

Different Australian universities have different research strengths. Study Australia recommends identifying a topic, university and academic supervisor, then checking the provider’s own requirements.

Compare research groups, facilities, data access, ethics support, industry links and recent work. General university ranking is less useful than evidence that the right team can support the project.

Approach a potential supervisor carefully

Read the academic’s university profile and recent publications before contact. Send a concise message that explains the question, relevant background, method interest and why the proposed work fits that person’s research.

Attach only requested materials and use a professional subject line. A positive conversation is useful but may not equal formal supervision approval, admission or funding.

Prepare evidence of research readiness

Universities may assess prior qualifications, grades, thesis or project experience, research methods, publications, employment, references and English evidence. Requirements differ by course and discipline.

Prepare verified transcripts, completion evidence, a research sample, CV, referee details and clear descriptions of individual contributions to collaborative work.

Build a realistic proposal

Use the provider’s required format and length. Common elements include context, problem, research questions, literature, methods, feasibility, ethics considerations, expected contribution, timeline and references.

Explain access to participants, data, laboratories or field sites where relevant. Identify limits and alternatives instead of presenting uncertain access as guaranteed.

Check ethics and research integrity

Human participants, animals, sensitive data, Indigenous knowledge, biosafety or overseas fieldwork may require approvals. Do not begin regulated data collection merely because admission has been offered.

Keep accurate sources and authorship records. Follow the provider’s rules for generative AI, data management, conflicts of interest and publication.

Apply through the individual university

Study Australia notes that HDR application processes vary. Some universities require supervisor support before an online application, while others match supervisors after an expression of interest.

Follow the current sequence exactly. Record the application number, document status, scholarship selection stage and any conditions attached to an offer.

Separate admission from scholarship selection

A university may consider a student academically suitable but not award funding. Scholarship ranking can be more competitive and may use publications, research quality, references, strategic field and available supervision.

Budget for tuition, living costs, OSHC, relocation, fieldwork and dependants unless each item is explicitly covered in a written scholarship offer.

Understand the Research Training Program

The Australian Government funds eligible universities through the RTP to support domestic and overseas students in research doctorate and research masters degrees. Universities administer applications, selection and offers; students do not apply to the Department of Education.

An RTP scholarship may include a full HDR tuition-fee offset, a living-cost stipend and allowances for eligible ancillary costs. The components depend on the university offer.

Check RTP eligibility and competition

International students enrolled in an accredited HDR at an eligible university can be eligible. The course must be a research doctorate or research masters, with at least two-thirds of study time spent on research for the RTP definition.

Eligibility does not guarantee selection. Universities set competitive processes and may consider previous study, work, publications, referee reports, research experience and priority areas.

Use current RTP rates correctly

The Department of Education publishes a 2026 full-time base stipend rate of AUD 34,315 and a maximum of AUD 53,608. These are program limits, not a promise that every offer pays the maximum.

Read the university’s 2026 scholarship policy for the actual annual rate, indexation, payment schedule, leave, relocation and thesis allowances.

Apply for RTP through universities

Students can apply for RTP consideration at more than one eligible university, subject to each institution’s process. Deadlines may be earlier than course application dates.

Confirm whether one form covers both admission and scholarship, whether a separate expression of interest is required and when referees must submit reports.

Read scholarship conditions before acceptance

Check the support period, full-time requirement, paid work policy, progress milestones, leave, suspension, termination and reporting obligations. For a full-time research doctorate, RTP support is generally available for three to four years at the university’s discretion; a full-time research masters can receive up to two years.

Ask how an extension, change of topic, supervisor move or delayed ethics approval affects funding.

Verify Student visa work conditions

Home Affairs publishes an exception to the usual 48-hour fortnight limit after a masters by research or doctoral course has started. The exact visa condition and commencement status matter.

Check the individual VEVO record and provider confirmation before increasing work. Research progress and scholarship conditions still apply even where the visa permits more hours.

Plan for candidature milestones

Research degrees commonly use confirmation, progress reviews, ethics approval, data milestones, thesis submission and examination stages. Obtain the official schedule and consequences for delay.

Meet supervisors regularly and document agreed actions. Raise supervision, resource or scope problems early through the graduate research process.

Prepare a complete research budget

  • Tuition not covered by a fees offset
  • Living costs beyond any stipend
  • OSHC for the student and dependants
  • Relocation and temporary accommodation
  • Equipment, software, fieldwork and data
  • Conference, publication and thesis costs
  • Emergency and return-travel funds

Research application workflow

  1. Define the question. Establish significance and feasible scope.
  2. Find research fit. Compare groups, facilities and supervisors.
  3. Check requirements. Read course and scholarship policies.
  4. Prepare evidence. Build the proposal, CV, samples and references.
  5. Apply correctly. Follow the university’s HDR sequence.
  6. Compare offers. Separate admission, fees and funding components.
  7. Verify conditions. Use the offer, scholarship policy and VEVO.

Frequently asked questions

Can an international student receive an RTP scholarship?

Yes. International students in an eligible accredited research masters or doctorate may be considered through a university’s competitive process.

Do I apply to the Australian Government for RTP?

No. Each eligible university manages its own application, selection and offer process.

Does RTP cover every cost?

Not automatically. An offer may contain a fees offset, stipend, allowances or a combination, so read its exact components.

Is a coursework masters eligible for RTP?

No. RTP eligibility is for accredited research masters and research doctorate HDR courses.

Can a research student work over 48 hours a fortnight?

Home Affairs publishes an exception after a masters by research or doctoral course has started, but the student must verify the individual visa and scholarship conditions.
