USA F1 Status Maintenance Guide for Nepali Students explains how designated school official reporting, full-course enrolment, approved reduced loads, program dates, address changes, travel, transfers and employment authorisation work together after arrival. The safest habit is to ask the DSO before an academic, work or travel change, not after it has already happened.
Information checked on 24 July 2026 using current DHS Study in the States, ICE, USCIS and CBP guidance. Individual SEVIS records and authorised documents control.

Understand status and visa validity
The visa in the passport is primarily a travel document for seeking admission. F-1 status inside the United States is maintained through lawful admission, an active SEVIS record and compliance with student rules.
ICE says a student maintaining status may remain in the United States even if the F-1 visa expires. A valid visa can still be needed for later re-entry.
Complete school and DSO check-in
Report arrival through the school’s required process and attend international orientation. The DSO confirms information and registers the initial SEVIS record.
Do not assume class registration alone completes immigration check-in. Save the submission confirmation.
Maintain a full course of study
F-1 students generally must pursue a full course of study each required session. The school and education level determine the required credits or clock hours.
Ask the DSO how online courses, thesis registration, summer terms and repeated classes count. Academic advising and immigration advising answer different parts.
Do not drop a course first
DHS guidance warns that dropping below a full course without prior DSO approval violates status. A teacher’s permission or registrar action is not enough.
Discuss withdrawal, leave, medical difficulty and schedule changes with the DSO before the registration record changes.
Understand academic-difficulty reduced loads
A DSO may authorise a reduced course load for limited initial academic difficulties, including initial English or reading difficulty, unfamiliarity with U.S. teaching methods or improper course-level placement.
This category is limited and generally applies only in the initial academic term. The DSO must approve and document it.
Understand medical reduced loads
A medical reduced course load requires current documentation from an authorised licensed medical professional and DSO approval for each session.
DHS guidance allows medical reduced loads for an aggregate maximum of 12 months at the same program level. The DSO keeps the required documentation.
Understand the final-session reduced load
A student who needs fewer courses to complete the program in the final session may receive an authorised reduced load. This is not automatic merely because graduation is expected.
Confirm the remaining degree requirements with the academic adviser and obtain DSO authorisation before registering below full time.
Resume full-time study when required
After an authorised reduced load ends, the student must return to the full course at the next required session unless another valid authorisation applies.
Keep the updated Form I-20 or school record associated with the decision.
Monitor the Form I-20 program end date
Compare academic progress with the program end date well before it arrives. Delayed research, prerequisites or documented circumstances may require a school process.
Ask the DSO about an extension before the end date. A late request can have different consequences.
Report address and identity changes
SEVP guidance requires students to report specified personal-information changes, including a U.S. address change, within the applicable timeframe, commonly 10 days.
Use the school’s reporting channel and retain evidence. The DSO updates SEVIS from the information supplied.
Keep passport and records valid
Monitor passport validity and follow the issuing authority’s renewal process. Store the passport, visa, current and previous Forms I-20, I-94 and fee records securely.
Retrieve and check the I-94 after each entry because it records the class and admission information.
Coordinate international travel
Before departure, ask the DSO to confirm SEVIS status, Form I-20 travel endorsement and return documents. Also check passport and visa validity.
Do not assume a previous travel signature or expired visa will work in every itinerary or individual situation.
Coordinate school transfers
An F-1 transfer uses a SEVIS release date between SEVP-certified schools. Continue following the transfer-out school’s requirements until the approved transition.
Check the new Form I-20, program start and DSO check-in. Employment authorisation may be affected by transfer.
Coordinate a new education level
Moving from bachelor to masters or another level requires an appropriate SEVIS and Form I-20 process. Admission to the new program does not update status by itself.
Ask the DSO about timing, funding evidence and whether the change is at the same or a different school.
Work only with proper authorisation
On-campus employment, CPT, OPT and economic-hardship work have different rules. Unauthorised work can lead to SEVIS termination.
Ask before starting paid work, freelancing, an internship or an unpaid activity that may legally be employment.
Understand CPT and OPT as separate benefits
CPT must be integral to the curriculum and appear as DSO-authorised employment on Form I-20 before work begins. OPT requires a DSO recommendation and USCIS employment authorisation.
Do not work while an OPT application is pending unless another valid authorisation covers the activity.
Maintain academic progress
Status requires more than paying tuition. Attend, complete assessments and follow the school’s academic and attendance policies.
Use tutoring, counselling and academic support early. A documented problem still needs the correct DSO process for any immigration change.
Respond to DSO and school notices
Read messages about registration, address, program dates, employment or SEVIS. Verify suspicious messages through the official international office.
Keep dated copies of requests, approvals and updated Forms I-20.
Act quickly after a possible violation
Contact the DSO immediately after an unauthorised drop, work issue, missed check-in or other status concern. Explain facts and preserve documents.
Do not submit false records or leave the issue hidden. The available options depend on the individual record and timing.

Frequently asked questions
Can I stay in the USA after my F-1 visa expires?
A student may remain with an expired visa while continuing to maintain lawful F-1 status; a valid visa may be needed for later re-entry.
Can I drop below full time and ask the DSO later?
No. The reduced course load must be authorised before dropping below the required load.
Can a medical condition support a reduced load?
Yes, with qualifying current medical documentation and DSO approval under the applicable limits.
How soon should an address change be reported?
Follow the DSO process promptly; SEVP guidance commonly requires relevant changes within 10 days.
Does an internship offer authorise work?
No. The student must have the correct CPT, OPT or other authorisation before starting.
