USA Resume Guide for Nepali Students

USA Resume Guide for Nepali Students explains how to read a vacancy, choose relevant evidence, write clear achievement bullets, format for applicant tracking systems, protect personal data and tailor every application without inventing qualifications. A resume should help an employer verify fit quickly; it is not a complete autobiography.

Information checked on 24 July 2026 using current U.S. Department of Labor, USAJOBS and FTC resources. Employer instructions and application systems can change.

Read the full job announcement

Start with duties, required qualifications, preferred skills, location, schedule and application instructions. Mark the evidence the employer is asking to see before changing the resume.

A familiar job title can hide different responsibilities. The vacancy text, not a generic template, should control the emphasis.

Create a requirement-to-evidence map

Place each important requirement beside a truthful example from coursework, employment, research, volunteering, leadership or a personal project. Note the action, setting, tool and result.

This map exposes gaps early and prevents attractive but unsupported claims from reaching the final document.

Choose a readable resume structure

CareerOneStop describes chronological, functional and combination approaches. A simple chronological or combination structure often gives both readers and applicant tracking systems a clear work history.

Use the format that presents the applicant’s actual experience honestly. Do not use a functional layout merely to hide dates or roles.

Write a focused opening

A recent graduate may use a short objective that names the degree, strongest relevant capabilities and target role. An experienced applicant may use a concise qualifications summary.

Avoid broad claims such as hardworking or passionate unless the rest of the resume provides specific evidence.

Place education strategically

CareerOneStop advises recent graduates to consider placing education before work experience. Include the institution, credential, field and completion or expected-completion date as appropriate.

Add relevant coursework, academic honours or a strong GPA only when they help the target application and are accurate.

Use projects as evidence

A substantial class, capstone, laboratory, research or independent project can demonstrate technical and collaborative skills. State the problem, individual contribution, methods and outcome.

For group work, distinguish personal responsibility from the team’s result. Never claim ownership of work completed by someone else.

Describe experience with action and outcome

CareerOneStop recommends making relevant qualifications easy to find and using specifics such as scale, time, quality, money or percentage where reliable. Begin bullets with a precise action.

A useful pattern is action, context and result. Numbers should come from records or a reasonable documented calculation, not guesswork.

Translate experience from Nepal carefully

Use clear English job titles and briefly explain an unfamiliar organisation or credential when needed. Preserve the official name and do not convert grades or qualifications without an accepted basis.

Spell out uncommon abbreviations on first use so a U.S. reader can understand the context.

Select relevant skills

List tools, languages, laboratory methods, platforms or professional capabilities that matter to the role and that the applicant can demonstrate. Match the employer’s terminology when it is accurate.

Do not create a long keyword inventory disconnected from education, projects or experience.

Keep ATS formatting simple

CareerOneStop recommends a clean single-column layout with standard headings and warns that tables, text boxes, columns, images and graphics can be scrambled by some applicant tracking systems.

Keep important information in the document body rather than a header or footer, and use consistent spacing and ordinary bullet characters.

Choose professional typography

Use a readable standard font, consistent heading levels and enough white space. CareerOneStop generally suggests 10 to 12 point body text and a one- or two-page resume for many applicants.

A vacancy can set different requirements. Federal applications, academic CVs and creative portfolios may follow specialised conventions.

Tailor keywords truthfully

Reuse the vacancy’s exact name for a skill, certification or tool when the applicant genuinely has it. Place the term beside supporting experience rather than repeating it invisibly.

CareerOneStop specifically warns that white-font keyword stuffing does not trick an applicant tracking system.

Handle employment gaps honestly

Do not falsify dates. CareerOneStop notes that a gap does not need a detailed explanation on the resume; relevant skills and experience should remain the focus.

A brief cover-letter or interview explanation can address context when useful, without sharing private details that are not relevant.

Prepare a federal resume separately

USAJOBS says applicants should read every announcement section, address the listed qualifications and include required education, licences or supporting documents. Current USAJOBS guidance limits federal resumes to two pages.

A private-sector resume may not contain enough detail for a federal vacancy. Follow the live announcement and USAJOBS instructions rather than reusing one file unchanged.

Use a professional filename

Name the file with the applicant’s name and, when helpful, the target role. Avoid labels such as final-final or unexplained version numbers.

Open the uploaded copy after submission when the system allows it, because conversion can change spacing or page breaks.

Follow the requested file type

CareerOneStop notes that a PDF can preserve formatting when no different format is specified. Some employer systems request Word, plain text or an online form instead.

The employer’s instruction wins. Check page count, file size, selectable text and links before uploading.

Protect personal information

Do not place a Social Security number, bank details, passport number, full immigration document, date of birth, religion or unrelated family information on a normal resume. USAJOBS also says not to include a photo or sensitive personal details.

A verified employer may request lawful onboarding documents later through a secure process; that is different from publishing them in an application resume.

Check contact details and links

Use an email address checked regularly, a reachable phone number and an appropriate location description. Test LinkedIn, portfolio, code repository and project links in a private browser window.

Remove material that is confidential, inaccessible or unrelated to the role.

Ask references before listing them

CareerOneStop advises choosing people who know the applicant’s work and obtaining permission before sharing their contact details. Give a reference the role description and current resume.

References usually belong on a separate sheet unless the vacancy asks for them in the resume.

Use AI only as an editing aid

AI can help identify unclear phrases or compare a resume with a vacancy, but the applicant remains responsible for every fact. Replace generic language with real evidence and personal judgement.

Never upload confidential employer, client, research or identity data to a tool without permission and an appropriate privacy basis.

Review for bias and unnecessary details

A U.S. resume generally focuses on job qualifications. EEOC guidance explains that characteristics such as race, religion, sex, national origin and age are generally irrelevant to determining qualification.

Remove a photograph and unrelated personal descriptors unless a legitimate role-specific instruction and applicable law clearly require something different.

Spot fake resume and job services

The FTC warns that honest employers do not charge applicants for the promise of a job. Verify a recruiter, company and opening through contact information found independently.

Do not pay for equipment with a cheque sent by a supposed employer, and do not provide bank or identity details before a real hiring process.

Proofread in layers

Check names, dates, verb tense, punctuation, capitalisation and spacing separately. Then compare every claim against records and the vacancy.

Ask a career adviser or trusted reviewer to read for clarity, but keep control of factual accuracy.

Maintain a master and tailored versions

Keep a comprehensive private master record of projects, results, roles and dates. Create a shorter tailored copy for each target position.

Record which version was submitted, when it was sent and which vacancy it answered so interview preparation uses the same evidence.

Run a final application test

Confirm that the first half-page communicates the target, strongest evidence and recent education or experience. Search the document for the employer’s essential terms and verify that each one is supported.

Preview every page at normal size, check that no line is cut off and submit before the deadline rather than relying on a last-minute upload.

Resume warning signs

  • The same generic resume is sent to every role
  • Skills are listed without evidence in projects or experience
  • Tables, graphics or headers hide essential content from an ATS
  • Dates, job titles, grades or results are exaggerated
  • Sensitive identity or banking information appears in the file
  • An unknown recruiter requests payment or a cheque transfer
  • The uploaded copy is never opened and checked

Resume workflow

  3. Draft simply. Use standard headings and direct language.
  4. Show outcomes. Add verified scale, quality or results.
  5. Tailor terms. Match relevant employer language naturally.
  6. Protect privacy. Remove sensitive and irrelevant information.
  7. Test the file. Proofread, render, upload and reopen it.
