GRE Registration Guide for Nepali Students explains how to check university requirements, create an ETS account with an exact ID match, choose test-centre or at-home delivery, select a date, pay securely, name score recipients and preserve the confirmation. Registration should begin with the application deadline and accepted identification, not with the first appointment visible on an unofficial website.

Confirm that the program uses the GRE
Open the current official admission page for every intended graduate, business or law program. Record whether the GRE is required, optional, accepted or not considered, and whether a department has a different instruction from the central graduate school.
If wording is unclear, ask the program directly and keep the reply. Registering before this check can spend money and preparation time on a score that the application does not need.
Choose the correct GRE test
Most general graduate admission references are to the GRE General Test. ETS also offers Subject Tests in Mathematics, Physics and Psychology on different schedules and with separate registration.
Read the program wording and the product name on every checkout screen. A Subject Test does not replace the General Test unless the receiving program says so.
Work backwards from the deadline
ETS says the official score report is available 8-10 days after the General Test, while institutions can need additional time to receive and match it. Build a buffer before the earliest application deadline.
Leave room for preparation, document problems, payment failure, appointment changes and a possible retake. The latest technically possible date is rarely the safest date.
Check live appointment availability
The General Test is offered year-round on a first-come, first-served basis, but a preferred Nepal city, centre and time may not always be available. Use the ETS scheduling flow to search current dates.
An old centre list, coaching advertisement or social post cannot reserve a seat. Availability is confirmed only inside the live ETS process.
Create the ETS account on the official site
Use the ETS GRE account reached from ets.org. A candidate uses this account to register, view or change an appointment, see scores, order Additional Score Reports and access the GRE Diagnostic Service.
Use a personal email that will remain available after college or employment changes. Protect the password and verification methods, and do not let an agent control the account.
Match the name to identification
ETS requires the first and last name used for registration to exactly match, excluding accents, the name on the identification presented on test day. Supply complete given and family names rather than a nickname or initial.
Resolve a discrepancy before registering. A payment receipt cannot override an identity mismatch, and ETS warns that a candidate may be unable to test or may have scores cancelled.
Review Nepal-specific ID rules
ETS states that identification requirements depend on the testing location and the candidate’s citizenship. Select the applicable country and location on the current ID page instead of assuming that every government card is accepted.
General rules normally require an original, physical, valid government-issued ID with matching names, a recent recognisable photograph and a signature. The country-specific instruction controls where it differs.
Do not rely on an unacceptable ID
ETS lists photocopies, expired or damaged documents, phone-displayed IDs, international student IDs, payment cards, birth certificates, notary letters and several other documents as unacceptable primary or supplemental ID.
A student card may sometimes have a supplemental role but cannot fix a name mismatch on the primary ID. Contact the ETS Office of Testing Integrity before registration when the required documents cannot be met.
Choose a test centre thoughtfully
A test centre can reduce responsibility for computer, internet and room compliance. Compare travel time, reporting time, transport reliability and the environment in which concentration is strongest.
Confirm the full location on the appointment record and check it again shortly before test day. The business name used in a map result may differ from the ETS confirmation.
Evaluate at-home testing before booking
ETS currently says the General Test at home is offered wherever the test is normally available, based on the account country, and is monitored by a human proctor. Eligibility and appointments must still appear in the live account.
At home is not simply a video call. The candidate must satisfy the current computer, secure-browser, camera, second-camera, room, privacy and identity-verification requirements.
Run the at-home equipment check
Before paying for at-home delivery, install the current ETS Secure Browser and run its equipment check on the exact computer and network planned for test day. Test camera movement, microphone, display and permissions.
Repeat the check after operating-system, security-software or network changes. A passing check weeks earlier does not guarantee that a later configuration still works.
Prepare the at-home room
ETS requires a private room where no one enters and rules out public spaces such as cafes. Current guidance also requires a movable main camera and, effective 5 January 2026, a supported smartphone or tablet as a second camera.
Read every room and desk rule before selecting at home. Failure to meet requirements on test day can mean no test, refund or free reschedule.
Complete at-home identity verification
For qualifying at-home appointments booked and scheduled on or after 31 March 2026, ETS instructs candidates to complete ID verification through the IDVaaS app at least 72 hours before the test. A late booking should be verified immediately.
Follow the QR-code, ID capture, chip scan where applicable, selfie and submission steps in the account message. Preserve confirmation and still keep the acceptable physical ID for proctor review.
Select the date and time zone carefully
Read the full date, local time and time-zone display before continuing. For at-home tests, confirm that the appointment corresponds to Nepal time and that the room and equipment will be available for check-in and testing.
For a centre, calculate reporting time separately from the test start. Save a calendar entry without manually converting the time a second time unless ETS specifically displays another zone.
Know the minimum registration timing
The 2026-27 Bulletin says online registration should be completed at least two calendar days before the preferred date and phone registration at least two business days before it. Appointment availability remains first-come, first-served.
This minimum is not a planning recommendation. Earlier registration gives more time to fix identity, payment and mode problems.
Request accommodations before testing
ETS says candidates requesting disability or health-related accommodations must obtain approval before testing. Read the current Bulletin Supplement and submit the required documentation through the specified process.
Do not book a standard appointment first and assume extra time or breaks can be added at check-in. Follow the approval and registration instructions supplied by ETS Disability Services.
Review the price before checkout
On 24 July 2026, ETS lists USD 220 for the General Test in all areas other than China and India-specific handling. ETS also announces that registrations completed on or after 1 August 2026 will use a USD 249 General Test fee.
Fees are subject to change, and the 2026-27 Bulletin says the final online transaction includes a non-refundable 4% service fee. Trust the live ETS checkout total.
Pay through the ETS checkout
The current Bulletin lists major credit or debit cards, PayPal, certain bank-payment conditions, Alipay+ options and an authorisation voucher for online transactions. Available choices can vary by country and account.
Use a card with sufficient international online capacity and complete any bank authentication. Do not send card details to a person claiming to reserve a seat outside the ETS checkout.
Choose score recipients deliberately
The Bulletin says the test fee allows designation of up to four graduate institutions or fellowship sponsors. Research official recipient and department codes before the appointment and understand the current ScoreSelect choices.
Additional recipients ordered later carry a separate fee. A recipient code sends a report; it does not submit or automatically match a university application.
Review every detail before payment
Check the exact account name, test type, mode, centre or at-home selection, date, time, time zone, fee and contact information. Read the cancellation and rescheduling policy.
Take a screenshot for personal reference only after sensitive payment details are no longer displayed. Do not publish the appointment number or identity documents.
Save the appointment confirmation
Download or securely store the confirmation email and account record. Add the test date, check-in time, location or at-home link, ID, equipment verification and recipient research to a checklist.
If confirmation does not arrive, check the ETS account and payment record rather than paying again immediately. Contact official GRE Services when the transaction status is unclear.
Know the rescheduling deadline
The current Bulletin says a General Test appointment outside Mainland China must be rescheduled no later than four days before the test date or the test fee is forfeited. A rescheduling charge applies.
Use the ETS account and confirm the replacement date. Appointments cannot be moved beyond one year from the original appointment date, and General and Subject Test registrations are not exchangeable.
Know the cancellation refund rule
For the general policy outside Mainland China, cancelling no later than four days before the test date produces a refund equal to half of the original test fee. Later cancellation or nonattendance can forfeit the fee.
Service fees and extra services can have different refund treatment. Read the current Bulletin and the account’s displayed terms before confirming cancellation.
Respect the retake policy
ETS currently allows the General Test once every 21 days, up to five attempts in a continuous rolling 12-month period. The count includes a test whose scores were cancelled.
A second booking should also fit university deadlines and a specific improvement plan. Registering for an ineligible date can lead to cancellation and fee forfeiture.
Avoid registration fraud
Use ets.org, the ETS account and official support channels. Be cautious of guaranteed seats, discounted vouchers of uncertain origin, requests for account credentials or payment to a personal wallet.
Keep control of the email, password, ID and score-recipient choices. Assistance can explain the process, but the candidate remains responsible for truthful information and test rules.
