The GRE and SAT are normally not alternatives

The GRE General Test is used for graduate, business and law programmes. The SAT is designed for college-level undergraduate admission and readiness evidence.

A student usually does not choose between GRE and SAT for the same programme. The intended degree level determines which policy to research.

Start with the degree you want

If you are applying from secondary school or after +2 for a bachelor’s degree, inspect undergraduate admissions and any SAT policy. If you are applying after a bachelor’s for a master’s or doctoral degree, inspect the graduate programme and any GRE policy.

Do not infer a requirement from the country alone. US institutions can use required, optional, not required or not accepted policies at both levels.

Understand the GRE’s application role

The GRE provides common measures of verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning and analytical writing for graduate-level admissions. It is accepted across many master’s, doctoral, business and approved law programmes.

Each receiving programme decides whether and how to use scores. Check the programme, intake and applicant category.

Understand the SAT’s application role

The SAT provides Reading and Writing and Math evidence used by colleges in undergraduate admissions and related decisions. College Board says it should be considered with other student information.

Every college controls its testing policy. Verify whether an international applicant must, may or should not submit the SAT for the intended cycle.

Compare overall testing time

The current GRE takes about 1 hour 58 minutes and has no scheduled break. The current SAT takes 2 hours 14 minutes and has a 10-minute break between its two sections.

Appointment time can be longer because of check-in and administration. Approved accommodations may change an individual test schedule.

Compare the GRE structure

The GRE has one 30-minute Analyze an Issue task, two Verbal Reasoning sections and two Quantitative Reasoning sections. Verbal contains 12 and 15 questions, and Quant also contains 12 and 15.

Analytical Writing always appears first. Verbal and Quant sections can appear in either order afterward.

Compare the SAT structure

The digital SAT has Reading and Writing followed by Math. Reading and Writing contains 54 questions across two 32-minute modules.

Math contains 44 questions across two 35-minute modules. The two sections total 98 questions and 134 minutes.

Compare writing assessment

The GRE includes a separately scored analytical essay that requires a developed position in response to an Issue task.

The SAT has no essay section. Its Reading and Writing questions assess comprehension, analysis, expression of ideas and Standard English conventions through selected-response tasks.

Compare reading format

GRE Reading Comprehension uses passages of varying lengths and can ask single-answer, multiple-answer or passage-selection questions.

SAT Reading and Writing uses short passages or passage pairs with one question each under the current digital format.

Compare vocabulary and language

GRE Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence require contextual vocabulary, logical clues and relationships among words and ideas.

SAT Reading and Writing includes words in context, rhetorical analysis, transitions, information synthesis and grammar. It does not use GRE Sentence Equivalence.

Compare quantitative scope

GRE Quant covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis at a level intended to measure graduate-school reasoning rather than advanced university mathematics.

SAT Math focuses on Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry within its college-readiness framework.

Compare question formats

GRE Quant uses Quantitative Comparison, single- and multiple-answer multiple choice, Numeric Entry and data interpretation sets.

Most SAT questions are multiple choice, while some Math questions require the test taker to enter an answer.

Compare adaptive design

GRE Verbal and Quant are section-level adaptive. The difficulty of the second section of each measure depends on overall performance in its first section.

Each SAT section has two modules. Performance in the first module determines whether the second module is more or less difficult.

Do not game the adaptive route

On both tests, concentrate on accurate work rather than guessing which difficulty route appeared. Perceived difficulty is unreliable and can distract from the current question.

Use official practice to understand scoring and adaptivity. Do not apply a fixed raw-score conversion from an unofficial source.

Compare navigation boundaries

The GRE lets you skip, mark, return and change answers anywhere within the current section. You cannot return after that section ends.

The SAT Bluebook interface supports movement within the current module, but a completed module cannot be reopened. Practise the exact interface before test day.

Compare calculator access

The GRE provides a basic on-screen calculator in Quant, intended for computation when useful rather than as a substitute for reasoning.

The SAT provides an embedded Desmos graphing calculator throughout Math, and approved handheld calculator rules also apply. Check the current calculator policy and practise the tool you will use.

Compare breaks and stamina

The current standard GRE has no scheduled break. Prepare for continuous testing across writing, verbal and quantitative work.

The SAT has a scheduled 10-minute break between Reading and Writing and Math. Use official full-length practice to rehearse the whole sequence.

Compare GRE scores

GRE Verbal and Quant are each reported from 130 to 170 in one-point increments. Analytical Writing is reported from 0 to 6 in half-point increments.

ETS does not report one total that combines all three measures. Programmes interpret the section scores and writing result in context.

Compare SAT scores

The SAT total score ranges from 400 to 1600. It is the sum of Reading and Writing and Math section scores, each ranging from 200 to 800.

College Board score reports also provide contextual information. Use the intended college’s policy rather than a universal “good score” table.

Do not convert GRE and SAT scores

The scales represent different exams, applicant populations, degree stages and constructs. A GRE 320 cannot be translated into an SAT 1450 or vice versa.

Compare each score only with current official information relevant to its receiving programme.

Compare preparation foundations

Reading comprehension, grammar awareness, arithmetic, algebra, data analysis and timed decision-making support both exams.

However, GRE analytical writing, advanced contextual vocabulary and Quantitative Comparison require specific preparation, while the SAT’s short-passage design and Desmos-enabled Math need their own routines.

Do not prepare for both without a real reason

Taking both may be appropriate only when you have separate undergraduate and graduate application plans or another clearly verified need.

For one degree application, preparing for the wrong-level test wastes time that should support the required exam, academics and documents.

Build an application-policy worksheet

Record institution, programme, degree level, intake, test policy, score evidence, reporting method, deadline, source URL and access date.

Use one row per programme. A university can have different policies for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral admissions.

Interpret test-optional correctly

Optional means the institution permits a choice under its stated rules; it does not prove that every applicant should make the same decision.

Read how submitted scores are reviewed and what alternative evidence is considered. Ask admissions when the wording is unclear.

Use official diagnostics

For GRE preparation, use current ETS POWERPREP material. For SAT preparation, use College Board Bluebook full-length tests and official question resources.

Complete the practice under the correct timing and interface. Third-party raw scores should not replace official diagnostic evidence.

Set the right score target

For GRE, use the exact graduate programme’s section requirements, recommendations and admitted-student evidence. For SAT, use the undergraduate college’s current score ranges and policy.

Separate minimum, average, median, range and personal target. None of these guarantees admission.

Plan dates from deadlines

Work backward from the earliest complete-application deadline. Include registration availability, official score release, recipient processing and a possible retest.

Undergraduate and graduate admissions calendars may differ. Do not reuse one timeline simply because both applications are in the United States.

Compare complete application evidence

GRE programmes may also review university transcripts, prerequisites, research, work, recommendations and statements. SAT colleges may review secondary-school records, courses, activities, essays and recommendations.

Follow each institution’s process. A test score is one component and does not replace degree-level eligibility.

Use the correct official sources

Review the official GRE structure, official SAT structure and each target programme’s admissions page.

Recheck live score, calculator, registration and reporting pages because old articles may describe retired exam versions.

Follow a seven-step test-selection process

Choose the degree level; build the programme list; verify current policies; identify the required exam; review official structure; schedule from deadlines; then prepare with official practice.

If no test is required, decide submission from the institution’s stated guidance and the strength of your evidence.

Connect the test with study planning

For undergraduate or graduate programme research, documents and overseas-study planning, visit MKS Education. For structured GRE or SAT preparation, explore MKS Prep. Verify final institution policies directly.

Bring the programme-policy worksheet to counselling so nobody recommends a test before confirming the intended degree.

Frequently asked questions

Is the GRE harder than the SAT?

They serve different education levels and use different formats, so a universal difficulty ranking is not useful.

Can I use the SAT for a master’s degree?

Normally graduate programmes use their own graduate testing policy; verify the exact programme rather than substituting the SAT.

Can I use the GRE for a bachelor’s degree?

The GRE is a graduate admissions test; check the undergraduate college’s SAT or other testing policy.

Do both tests have an essay?

No. The GRE includes one Analytical Writing task, while the current SAT has no essay section.

Which exam should a Nepali student take?

Take the exam required or accepted for the intended degree and programme: usually SAT for undergraduate policy and GRE for graduate policy.
