Understand Table Analysis

Official GMAT content describes Table Analysis as sorting and analysing a table, similar to a spreadsheet, to determine which information is relevant or meets stated conditions.

The task tests interpretation and decision rules, not merely locating the largest number.

Use the Data Insights context

Table Analysis appears within the 20-question, 45-minute Data Insights section. It may require arithmetic, verbal interpretation or both.

Practise it in mixed sets so recognising the format and its response controls becomes automatic.

Read the accompanying text

Official strategy advises examining both the table and its text. The text can define variables, exclusions, periods and how missing entries should be interpreted.

Do not start sorting until you know what one row represents and how each metric was produced.

Inspect table structure

Read the title, column headings, units, row labels and footnotes. Identify whether rows are people, products, countries, months or grouped observations.

Check whether displayed values are counts, rates, ranks, percentages or currency before comparing them.

Identify the exact task

Read the question and all required response statements. Translate each into a plain condition such as “margin above 20 percent in both years.”

A statement may require a count, comparison, trend or exception; similar wording can demand different table operations.

Choose a purposeful sort

Sort the column that exposes the needed pattern: highest value, earliest date, repeated group or boundary. Do not sort simply because the control is available.

After sorting, keep row identity intact and verify values across the same row.

Know what sorting changes

Sorting changes row order, not the underlying data. A total or relationship does not change because a different column is selected.

When returning to another statement, recheck the current sort so row positions are not confused with original order.

Filter mentally by conditions

Apply one condition at a time and retain only rows that satisfy all requirements. Mark a short candidate list on the noteboard when the table is large.

For “or” conditions, include rows meeting either branch; for “and,” require every branch.

Judge each statement independently

Official strategy says to evaluate each answer statement under its specified condition. One true statement provides no evidence about the next.

Reset the condition and source rows before making each yes-no or true-false selection.

Track units

Look for thousands, millions, percentages, currency and per-unit rates. A value of 4.2 can mean 4.2 percent, NPR 4.2 million or 4.2 units.

Convert only when comparison requires it and write the unit beside any intermediate result.

Track time periods

Confirm whether columns cover months, quarters, calendar years or fiscal years. A growth comparison needs compatible start and end periods.

Do not treat a partial-year figure as directly comparable with a full-year total.

Track definitions

Terms such as active, successful, retained and profitable may have definitions in the accompanying text. Use those definitions rather than ordinary meaning.

A row can meet a numerical threshold but fail a verbal eligibility condition.

Handle row and column totals

Determine whether a percentage uses a row total, a column total or an overall total. The same numerator can produce different rates.

Check whether totals include every row or exclude categories noted in the text.

Handle percentages

Distinguish percentage share from percentage change. Share divides by a total at one point; change compares new and old values.

Also distinguish a change of five percentage points from a five percent relative increase.

Handle ratios and rates

Write what belongs in numerator and denominator before calculation. Preserve whether a rate is per employee, per day, per sale or per thousand users.

A high total need not imply a high rate when exposure or population differs.

Handle averages

Do not average group averages unless groups have equal size or the question permits it. Use weighted totals when group sizes differ.

Check whether the displayed figure is mean, median or another summary.

Handle rankings

Confirm whether rank one is highest or lowest and whether ties are possible. A better rank can accompany a lower absolute value when the comparison group changes.

Do not subtract ranks as though the difference were a measured quantity.

Handle missing data

A blank, dash or “not available” entry is not automatically zero. Use the legend or accompanying text to interpret it.

If required data are unavailable, determine whether another column or relationship can still answer the statement.

Handle ranges and boundaries

Pay attention to above versus at least, below versus no more than, and inclusive versus exclusive intervals.

Sort to the boundary, then inspect nearby rows carefully rather than scanning the entire table.

Handle multi-condition statements

Break a complex statement into atomic tests and apply them in the cheapest order. A rare condition can reduce the candidate rows before calculation.

Check every surviving row against every condition before concluding that none or all qualify.

Use estimation

Estimate when answer choices or thresholds are widely separated. Exact arithmetic is unnecessary when an upper bound already fails the condition.

Use estimation to catch decimal, unit and denominator errors after calculator work.

Use the calculator selectively

The Data Insights on-screen calculator can help with percentages, ratios and totals. Set up the relationship first so a precise calculation answers the right question.

Record enough intermediate meaning to avoid entering the correct numbers in the wrong order.

Recognise common traps

Traps include sorting the wrong column, comparing different units, using the wrong denominator, treating missing data as zero and overlooking an accompanying-text condition.

Another trap is answering a true statement about one row when the question asks about every qualifying row.

Manage interactive responses

Confirm each required yes-no or true-false control is selected. A correct calculation does not complete the item when another statement remains unanswered.

Use a final left-to-right interface check before moving on.

Manage pacing

The Data Insights average is 2 minutes 15 seconds per question, but table complexity varies. Use a targeted sort and condition filter rather than rereading every cell.

If one statement requires heavy calculation, settle easier statements first while protecting section checkpoints.

Use Review and Edit

After all section questions are answered, review as time permits and edit up to three responses. Bookmark for a specific unit, condition or denominator concern.

Change only when corrected table evidence identifies the earlier error.

Build a Table Analysis error log

Record task, chosen sort, condition, rows used, calculation, selected response, time and confidence.

Classify errors as structure, unit, definition, filter, denominator, arithmetic or incomplete response.

Practise transfer

After review, solve a new table with different labels but the same filter or ratio structure. Transfer proves the method was learned.

Mix counts, rates, trends and eligibility conditions so the statement controls the operation.
