Understand Two-Part Analysis

Official GMAT content describes Two-Part Analysis as a versatile format for complex quantitative, verbal or combined problems.

It can test trade-offs, simultaneous equations and relationships between two entities, but the precise task always comes from the prompt.

Use the Data Insights context

Two-Part Analysis appears in the 20-question, 45-minute Data Insights section. Its interface and multi-part completion make it different from ordinary five-choice questions.

Practise within mixed sets so changing from a chart or table to a response grid does not interrupt pacing.

Read both column headings

Official strategy warns that response-column headings can lack details available in the prompt. Combine each heading with the full task wording.

Restate each column as a complete question before solving.

Determine task dependence

Decide whether the two tasks can be solved independently or whether one result constrains the other. Official guidance explicitly identifies both possibilities.

If dependent, preserve the shared relationship; if independent, reset assumptions between columns.

Inspect all answer options

Official strategy recommends reviewing every available answer before deciding. The option set can reveal scale, precision and whether algebraic or logical elimination is efficient.

Translate the prompt

Separate shared and local constraints

Mark conditions that apply to both tasks and those that apply to only one. A local condition should not contaminate the other column.

When tasks are dependent, carry only results logically established under shared constraints.

Handle simultaneous equations

Define variables and translate relationships before calculating. Use substitution, elimination or answer-choice testing depending on which is shortest.

Check whether both requested values must satisfy the original system, not just a simplified equation.

Handle ratios

Express the ratio in a consistent order and identify whether the tasks ask for parts, totals or a comparison.

A ratio fixes relative size but needs a total or one actual value when absolute amounts are requested.

Handle rates and work

Use compatible units and distinguish individual rates from combined rates. The two columns may ask for time and contribution under the same setup.

Verify that both responses use the same work quantity or distance.

Handle percentages

Identify the base for each percentage. A two-part question may ask for original value and resulting percentage, which are linked but not interchangeable.

Distinguish percent change from percentage-point change before matching options.

Handle inequalities

Translate conditions into bounds and test whether tasks request minimum, maximum or a valid interval. Pay attention to strict versus inclusive limits.

Answer options can make boundary testing faster than solving a general expression.

Handle trade-offs

State what improves and what worsens, then identify the condition defining an acceptable choice. Official content lists evaluating trade-offs as a measured ability.

Do not optimise one metric while ignoring a binding threshold on the other.

Handle plans and decisions

Identify goal, proposed action, constraints and side effects. One column may identify a necessary condition while the other identifies the strongest supporting evidence.

Evaluate each role separately even when both concern the same plan.

Handle verbal relationships

Track conclusion, evidence, assumption and implication. A choice can strengthen one claim while serving a different role for another.

Use supplied information rather than outside business knowledge.

Handle classification tasks

Define the rule for each category, then test options consistently. Overlap may be allowed unless the prompt says categories are mutually exclusive.

Confirm whether every option must fit a category or only the two requested selections.

Use answer-choice testing

When options are numeric or structured, substitute them into the constraints. Reject a pair as soon as either column fails a required condition.

Testing can be faster than deriving a general solution, but verify the surviving pair against the full prompt.

Use elimination across columns

A value impossible for task one can be removed from that column without deciding task two. Shared constraints may then narrow both.

Keep column-specific elimination marks separate to avoid assuming one option is globally invalid.

Use estimation

Estimate when answer options are widely separated or a trade-off only needs direction. This can reduce unnecessary calculation.

Check that both estimated responses meet the required precision and conditions.

Estimate first and verify units, sign and magnitude after entry.

Verify both response columns

A correct first response does not complete the item. Read each column heading again and confirm one selection is made in each required column.

Recognise common traps

Traps include solving only one task, forcing different answers, carrying a local condition across columns and matching values to the wrong headings.

Another trap uses a pair that works separately but violates a shared constraint together.

Manage pacing

The Data Insights section averages 2 minutes 15 seconds per question, but Two-Part complexity varies. Spend a short setup period to avoid solving the wrong pair.

Use options and elimination before lengthy derivation while protecting section checkpoints and completion.

Use Review and Edit

After all section questions are answered, review as time permits and edit up to three responses. Bookmark for a specific heading, dependence or pair concern.

Change only when corrected logic or calculation identifies the earlier error.

Build a Two-Part error log

Record both tasks, dependence, shared constraints, method, selected pair, time and confidence.

Classify errors as task reading, dependence, setup, calculation, option mapping or incomplete response.

Practise transfer

After review, solve a fresh problem with the same relationship but different content. Transfer proves the two-task method was learned.
