Know the paradox task

A paradox question presents facts that seem difficult to reconcile and asks for information that explains, resolves or accounts for the situation.

Read the stem first

Official Verbal strategy guidance recommends determining exactly what the question asks before reading the related material.

Mark the task as resolve or explain. Do not accidentally weaken one fact, infer a new conclusion or evaluate an argument.

Treat both facts as true

The apparent conflict is not an invitation to reject the evidence. Accept both sides and search for a missing distinction that permits them to coexist.

An answer claiming one side is false usually fails unless the stimulus itself leaves that fact uncertain.

State the tension clearly

Rewrite the surprise in a compact form: despite X, Y occurred, even though X appeared to predict not Y.

Preserve population, time, measurement and comparison. A vague summary can hide the exact difference the answer must explain.

Identify the expected rule

Ask what ordinary expectation makes the two facts look inconsistent. The resolution often reveals why that expectation does not apply here.

Do not treat the expectation as an explicit fact unless the stimulus states it. It is the source of surprise, not necessarily a rule.

Predict a missing distinction

Before reading choices, consider broad possibilities such as different groups, different periods, hidden causes, changed definitions or offsetting effects.

Keep the prediction broad. The correct answer may resolve the tension through an unexpected but logically valid distinction.

Require both sides to survive

After adding a choice, restate both original facts and ask whether the combination is now understandable.

A choice that explains why X occurred but says nothing about Y does not resolve their relationship.

Do not require complete proof

The correct choice needs to provide a plausible relevant explanation, not demonstrate that it was the only cause.

Compare which option most directly removes the surprise. A possible story requiring several new assumptions is weaker.

Look for subgroup differences

A result for the whole population can coexist with a different result for a subgroup, especially when group sizes or composition change.

Check whether the stimulus compares the same people, products or locations. The resolution may identify that the groups differ.

Look for time differences

An action can have an immediate effect and a different delayed effect. Data from different windows can therefore appear contradictory.

A lag, seasonal pattern or one-time transition can reconcile both facts when timing is central.

Look for changed baselines

A larger improvement can still end at a lower level when the starting point differs. Absolute endpoints and changes answer different questions.

Write the starting and ending values conceptually. A baseline distinction often dissolves the paradox.

Look for totals and percentages

A total can rise while a percentage falls if the base grows faster. A rate can rise while the number falls if the population shrinks.

Label numerator and denominator before evaluating an option. Numerical word shifts are common sources of apparent conflict.

Look for averages and distributions

An average can remain stable while subgroups move in different directions, or change because the mix of groups changes.

Information about distribution, weighting or composition can reconcile an overall result with individual patterns.

Look for selection effects

The people who participate, remain, respond or are observed may differ from those who do not. A changed sample can alter reported outcomes.

A selection explanation works only when it connects directly to both observed facts.

Look for hidden incentives

A policy can change behaviour in an unintended way. People may substitute, delay, avoid or reclassify actions while the intended metric moves differently.

A valid choice shows how the incentive produces the surprising result without denying the policy or outcome.

Look for offsetting effects

One factor may push a measure upward while another larger factor pushes it downward. Both can be real even when the net result follows only one.

The answer should identify the offset relevant to the exact measured outcome.

Look for alternative mechanisms

The expected relationship may be overridden because another mechanism connects the same variables differently.

Do not insist that the original cause is absent. The resolution may show why its effect was masked.

Look for definition changes

Two reports may use different definitions, categories or measurement methods. A label that appears identical can represent different sets.

A correct answer clarifies the changed definition and why it produces both reported facts.

Look for capacity constraints

Demand may rise while sales remain flat if supply, staffing, space or delivery limits prevent completion.

A constraint resolves the tension only when one fact measures interest and the other measures realised output.

Look for price and quantity effects

Revenue, price and quantity can move differently because revenue combines price and quantity. A lower price can coexist with higher revenue if volume changes enough.

Translate the business relation before choosing an explanation. Do not treat related metrics as interchangeable.

Look for reporting effects

An apparent increase can result from better detection, reporting or classification rather than a larger underlying event rate.

The answer must explain why the measured result changed while the other fact remains true.

Handle causal surprises

If an expected cause does not produce its usual effect, ask whether the cause was too small, delayed, offset or applied to a different group.

Do not conclude the causal relationship is always false. The question asks about the present facts.

Handle plan outcomes

A plan can meet one metric while failing its broader goal, or appear to fail because participants change behaviour outside the measured channel.

Identify the action, measured outcome and real objective. A distinction among them can resolve the surprise.

Reject choices that explain one side only

Information about why the first fact occurred is insufficient if it leaves the second fact just as surprising.

After each choice, say because X, both A and B can be true. If the sentence cannot be completed, eliminate it.

Reject choices that deepen the paradox

Some options make the expected outcome even more likely and therefore increase the surprise.

Track direction carefully, especially with negatives and percentage language. A relevant choice can still move the wrong way.

Reject restatements

Repeating one or both facts does not explain their coexistence. The answer must add a missing condition, distinction or mechanism.

A paraphrase can feel clear while providing no new logical bridge.

Reject unrelated causes

A choice can explain a nearby event without affecting the exact facts in tension. Shared topic words are not enough.

Trace a direct path from the new information to both sides of the surprise.

Reject assumption-heavy stories

A choice that requires several invented facts is weaker than one that directly reconciles the evidence as written.

Treat the choice as true, but do not add extra details to make it work.

Avoid outside knowledge

Official guidance says specialised subject knowledge is not required and real-world truth judgments are unnecessary.

Personal beliefs about markets, health, education or policy can hide a simple distinction supplied by the option.

Use official questions for calibration

Use current official sample questions, the Starter Kit and official Verbal practice to learn the expected precision.

In Study Mode, identify why each wrong option fails to reconcile both facts. In Exam Mode, practise the same test under time pressure.

Maintain a paradox error log

Record the two facts, expected relationship, missing distinction, chosen option and why the correct answer permits coexistence.

Classify recurring patterns such as subgroup, time, base rate, definition, selection, incentive or offsetting effect.

Add timing gradually

Start untimed with explicit tension statements, then use focused sets, mixed Critical Reasoning and full Verbal sections.

If a choice requires a long story, test the simpler remaining options first. The correct bridge is usually expressible in one clear sentence.

Use Question Review and Edit wisely

The current exam allows bookmarks, review of as many questions as time permits and up to three answer edits after completing the section.

Choose the best first-pass resolution and bookmark only for a defined unresolved tension. No review screen appears if time is exhausted.

Follow a weekly routine

Mix paradox patterns with other Critical Reasoning tasks so stem classification remains automatic. Re-solve logged questions after a delay.

Track whether misses came from misreading a fact, accepting a one-sided explanation or adding assumptions.
