Australia Scholarships Guide for Nepali Students explains the main official funding routes: Australia Awards for eligible Nepalese professionals, Research Training Program support for higher degrees by research, and merit or regional awards offered by education providers. Each scheme has its own course level, deadline and selection rules, and a scholarship should never be assumed before a written award is issued.
Information checked on 24 July 2026. The Australia Awards details below refer to study commencing in 2027; that application window closed on 30 April 2026.

Know the three main scholarship routes
Australia Awards is a development-focused government programme with country-specific eligibility. The Research Training Program supports eligible research degrees through participating universities.
Universities and other providers also publish their own international scholarships. Those awards may be automatic, application-based, partial or full, so their names alone do not show the real value.
Australia Awards is available to Nepalese nationals
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirms that Nepalese nationals are eligible for long-term Australia Awards. The programme aims to build skills and leadership that contribute to development in Nepal.
It is not a general discount for any course. Applicants must meet the policy handbook, Nepal country profile, priority-field and selection requirements for the relevant intake.
Eligible study level for the 2027 intake
The Nepal profile for study commencing in 2027 lists master’s by coursework and master’s by research. It does not list a bachelor degree allocation for that round.
The programme requests Recognition of Prior Learning for Nepal recipients. If granted, the Australian institution may place the recipient in a shorter programme.
Qualification and work-experience combinations
For the 2027 Nepal round, the profile requires at least three years of relevant full-time work experience after the bachelor degree. It then lists three accepted qualification patterns.
- A four-year bachelor degree
- A three-year bachelor degree plus at least a one-year master’s degree
- A two-year bachelor degree plus at least a two-year master’s degree
The proposed course must also avoid duplicating an Australian-equivalent qualification already achieved. Applicants should read the exact profile rather than infer eligibility from degree length alone.
Australia Awards English scores for Nepal
The standard 2027 threshold is IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with every band at least 6.0. The listed alternatives are TOEFL iBT 84 with every subtest at least 21, or PTE Academic 58 with every communicative skill at least 50.
The result must be valid on 1 January 2027. A university can require a longer validity period or a higher score, so the scholarship threshold does not replace admission rules.
Inclusive lower entry threshold
The Nepal profile says women, people with disability, members of traditionally marginalised groups and public servants can be considered eligible with IELTS Academic 6.0 overall and every band at least 5.5, or equivalent TOEFL or PTE scores.
If offered an award, those applicants must still meet their selected university and degree English requirements before study begins.
What Australia Awards can cover
The 2027 Nepal profile lists return air travel, a one-off establishment allowance, full tuition, contribution to living expenses, an introductory academic programme and Overseas Student Health Cover for the scholarship duration.
It also lists supplementary academic support and eligible fieldwork allowances. Entitlements are governed by the policy and award conditions, not by an informal estimate.
The 2027 Australia Awards deadline has passed
For study commencing in 2027, applications opened at 09:00 AEDT on 1 February 2026 and closed at 14:00 AEST on 30 April 2026. Late applications and documents are not considered.
As of this article’s check date, that round is closed. Future applicants should monitor the DFAT opening-and-closing page and a newly issued Nepal country profile rather than reuse the old dates.
Apply through the stated official system
The Nepal profile directs online applications through OASIS and requires the full name exactly as shown in the passport. Nicknames, abbreviations and shortened names should not be used.
DFAT advises applying well before closing because portal demand increases near the deadline. Once an online application is submitted, it cannot be changed.
Prepare the Australia Awards documents
The Nepal profile lists citizenship evidence, certificates from SLC or SEE onward, transcripts from SLC or SEE onward, a valid English result, referee reports, a Development Impact and Linkages Plan, CV and employment letters.
Master’s by research applicants also need a research proposal and evidence that a potential supervisor provides in-principle support. Follow the current templates, certification instructions and PDF naming rules.
Follow the Australia Awards AI rule
DFAT’s current application guidance permits AI only for basic tasks such as spelling, grammar and organising ideas. It says AI must not write, improve or paraphrase any part of the application.
Every substantive response must be the applicant’s original work. Misuse may lead to disqualification, so do not submit generated development-impact or leadership answers.
How Australia Awards selection works
Only eligible applications are assessed and only shortlisted candidates are contacted. The Nepal profile says selection includes an interview.
Assessment considers academic competence, contribution to development outcomes in Nepal, and professional and personal leadership supported by relevant experience. A successful outcome remains subject to a university place and visa requirements.
Research Training Program scholarships
The Australian Government RTP supports domestic and international students undertaking research master’s and doctoral degrees at eligible universities. Support can include a tuition-fee offset, living stipend and ancillary allowances.
Universities administer the application and competitive selection. Students apply to the chosen university, may apply to more than one university, and must check each institution’s scholarship policy and deadline.
RTP support periods and 2026 rates
For full-time research doctorates, RTP support is available for a minimum of three and up to four years at the university’s discretion. A full-time research master’s can receive up to two years.
The Department of Education publishes a 2026 full-time base stipend rate of AUD 34,315 and maximum rate of AUD 53,608. A university decides the actual scholarship package and award rate within the programme rules.
Education provider scholarships
Study Australia says providers regularly offer scholarships to qualifying international students, often based on academic merit. Search the official Course Search tool and the provider’s scholarship database.
Check whether consideration is automatic or requires a separate form, and whether the amount is fixed or percentage-based. Read course exclusions, minimum grades, deadline, study load, duration and renewal conditions.
Regional and destination-based support
Study Australia links to scholarships and incentives in smaller cities and regional areas, including options connected with the Northern Territory, Western Australia, Adelaide, Canberra and Tasmania.
Availability changes. Verify the government or provider page and compare total living and study costs instead of choosing a location only for a headline bursary.
Calculate the unfunded balance
A partial tuition scholarship does not normally pay every tuition instalment, visa charge, OSHC, travel, rent, bond, food and study expense. Read the award letter and calculate the remaining amount.
For visa evidence, rely on current Home Affairs requirements. A scholarship can support the financial case, but it does not automatically replace every requested document.
