Understand what a USI is
A Unique Student Identifier is a personal Australian education identifier. A person creates it once and keeps it for life.
It can link nationally recognised VET achievements and support higher-education reporting. It is not a visa, student card or provider enrolment number.
Know who needs a USI
International students studying VET or higher education in Australia generally need a USI. Higher-education students need it to graduate and receive an award.
Requirements also apply to Commonwealth supported places and financial assistance, although most international students use different fee arrangements.
Do not create it before arriving

A person should have only one USI. A previous VET course, school program or provider may already have created one with permission.

Create it through the official student portal
Use the Australian Government USI Student Portal, agree to the terms, verify identity, provide contact details and secure the account.
Type the official address directly or follow a trusted government link. USI creation itself should not require payment to a private service.
Use personal contact details
Provide an email address and mobile number the student controls long term. A temporary school or agent email may become inaccessible after study.
Keep recovery details current. The USI remains with the person across providers and qualifications.
Secure the account
Use a unique password, multi-factor authentication and security answers that cannot be guessed from social media. Do not share verification codes.
Store the USI in a password manager or secure document record. It should not be posted publicly with passport details.
Save the USI confirmation
Record the identifier exactly and save confirmation outside the phone used during creation. Mistyped characters can fail provider verification.
Do not create a second USI because the first confirmation is lost. Use the official recovery process.
Share it with the education provider
Provide the USI through the provider’s secure student system or authorised process. Confirm that the provider has verified it against the student’s details.
A screenshot sent through an unknown messaging account can expose identity information. Ask the provider for its approved channel.
Understand provider permission
Providers must obtain student permission before creating, searching for or sharing a USI or viewing a VET transcript. They must provide a privacy notice when creating one for a student.
A provider does not need permission merely to verify that a USI supplied by the student is correct.
Resolve a name mismatch early
If provider and USI records do not match, compare the verified legal name, date of birth and document details. Follow the official update or help-request process.
Do not repeatedly swap given and family names without reading the error. Record the exact attempt and message.
Keep USI, TFN and provider details consistent
USI guidance recommends using consistent verifiable identity details for the USI, Tax File Number and related government records.
Consistency supports education reporting and award verification. A preferred name can still be used where the provider separately allows it.
Update details through the account
After a legal name, passport or contact change, follow the official process to update the USI record and notify the provider.
Keep evidence of the change. Do not ask an unrelated agent to edit the account.
Use the VET transcript carefully
The USI can provide access to a government-authenticated record of nationally recognised VET training reported since 2015.
Check the transcript and contact the training provider about missing or incorrect training data. Do not alter a downloaded record.
