Australia Visa English Test Guide for Nepali Students explains the current Student visa scores for IELTS, PTE, TOEFL and other approved tests, lower-score ELICOS pathways, evidence timing and the ban on fully online at-home results. Education providers can set admission scores above the visa minimum, so both requirements must be checked.
Information checked on 24 July 2026. The score table below is for approved tests taken on or after 7 August 2025; earlier results use transitional rules and must be checked separately.

Visa English and university English are separate
Home Affairs sets the Student visa evidence rule. The university or college sets its own admission requirement for the course.
An applicant must satisfy both. A score high enough for the visa can still be below a nursing, teaching or other programme requirement.
Use the table for the correct test date
Approved tests and scores changed on 7 August 2025. Home Affairs publishes one table for tests taken on or before 6 August 2025 and another for tests taken from 7 August 2025.
Use the actual test date, not the date the result was downloaded. Transitional results also need to remain valid for the subclass 500 application.
IELTS score from 7 August 2025
The current standard minimum is overall 6.0 for IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training. With at least 10 weeks of eligible ELICOS, Foundation or Pathway study, the table shows 5.5; with at least 20 weeks of ELICOS, it shows 5.0.
Home Affairs accepts eligible One Skill Retake results under current rules, but the education provider may have its own policy.
PTE Academic score
For tests from 7 August 2025, the current standard PTE Academic minimum is 47. The 10-week eligible pathway column shows 39 and the 20-week ELICOS column shows 31.
Do not compare these directly with an old PTE scale or an unofficial converter. Use the Home Affairs table for the test date.
TOEFL iBT score and 2026 registration rule
The current standard TOEFL iBT minimum is 67, with 51 for the eligible 10-week pathway column and 37 for at least 20 weeks of ELICOS.
From 21 January 2026, applicants must select “Taking TOEFL for Australia” during registration for the result to be valid for Australian visa purposes.
Other approved tests
The current post-7-August-2025 table also lists C1 Advanced 161, CELPIP General 7, LANGUAGECERT Academic 61, Michigan English Test 53 and OET 1210 as standard minimums.
Each test has pathway scores, limitations and evidence formats. Choose one accepted by both Home Affairs and the education provider.
Secure test centres are required
Home Affairs says approved tests must take place in a secure test centre. Entirely online, remote-proctored or at-home versions are not accepted for visa evidence.
Booking through an official test-provider channel does not make every delivery mode eligible. Confirm the exact product name and venue.
Examples of unaccepted at-home versions
Home Affairs lists IELTS Online, LANGUAGECERT Academic Online, OET@Home, CELPIP Online, at-home MET Digital and TOEFL iBT Home Edition as examples that are not accepted.
A provider may use an online test for admission screening, but that does not make it valid for the visa.
Two-year evidence timing
For regular evidence, the approved test is generally completed within two years before visa lodgement. Under streamlined evidence, a requested result is generally completed within two years before the decision.
Check the exact subclass 500 guidance and do not let a result expire during a delayed application.
English evidence and the document checklist
The combined country and provider evidence setting affects whether English evidence must be attached at lodgement. Run the official document checklist using the principal course provider.
If the checklist or ImmiAccount requires English evidence, attach it before submitting. Missing mandatory evidence can cause refusal without a later request.
English evidence exemptions
Home Affairs lists exemptions for specified passport holders, sponsored or exchange students, standalone ELICOS, registered school study, some postgraduate research and certain prior study histories.
A Nepali passport alone does not appear in the English-passport exemption list. An applicant claiming another exemption must attach evidence where required.
Standalone ELICOS and packaged ELICOS
A standalone registered ELICOS principal course can fall within an English-evidence exemption. A package leading to another principal course uses the pathway-score rules and minimum course duration.
Include every CoE and check that course progression and gap rules are satisfied.
Foundation and eligible Pathway programmes
The lower 10-week column can apply with a Foundation Standard or Extended programme or another eligible Pathway programme under the current instrument.
Not every foundation-style course qualifies. Verify the programme against Home Affairs rules and CRICOS records.
Test provider evidence files
Upload the result format requested by Home Affairs and enter identifying details accurately. For LANGUAGECERT Academic, Home Affairs says both the certificate and report are needed.
Keep account access and permit result verification. Do not alter a score report or convert it into a self-made certificate.
Old TOEFL and Cambridge results
Home Affairs identifies special periods when certain TOEFL iBT or Cambridge formats were not approved or had restrictions. A result inside the normal age limit can still be unusable.
Check the exact test date and delivery mode against the live notes.
Choosing between IELTS, PTE and TOEFL
Compare test format, available dates, score-report timing, personal strengths and provider acceptance. The “easiest” test differs by candidate.
Take an official practice test before booking. Choose based on evidence, not social-media claims about guaranteed scores.
