Start with the testing location

GMAT ID requirements vary by where the exam is taken. Select the actual country in the official ID page.

A Nepali citizen testing in Nepal and a Nepali citizen testing abroad may need different documents.

Separate citizenship from location

Record both country of citizenship and physical testing country before reading the rule. Do not assume they are the same.

If travel plans change, recheck the ID requirement for the final location before rescheduling.

Use an international passport when testing abroad

GMAC states that an international travel passport is always required when testing outside the country of citizenship.

Passport cards are not accepted. The physical travel passport must meet all current validity and identity rules.

Check options when testing in Nepal

Use the live country selector to see whether Nepal permits another government-issued form in addition to or instead of a passport for the chosen route.

Do not rely on another candidate’s old experience. Save the current instruction and contact GMAC when uncertain.

Match the Roman-alphabet name

The name on the ID must use the Roman alphabet and match the mba.com profile exactly, including order and placement.

Use the legal name from the intended document. Do not shorten, rearrange or replace it with a nickname.

Check every name component

Compare given names, family names and any additional names character by character. Pay attention to spacing and order.

If the document and profile structure names differently, contact GMAC Customer Care before scheduling or well before the appointment.

Match the date of birth

The ID birth date must exactly match the date supplied when the mba.com account was created.

Check day, month and year. A formatting assumption can create a substantive mismatch.

Match citizenship information

Current policies require registration identity and citizenship information to be accurate and consistent with the applicable documents.

Resolve dual-citizenship, refugee, asylum or other unusual circumstances through official support rather than guessing.

Use the original document

The ID must be the originally issued physical document. Photocopies, scans, selfies, portraits and profile photographs are unacceptable.

Online candidates still need the valid original ID for capture and live proctor verification.

Check that the ID is current

Expired identification is not accepted. Renewal papers do not make an expired passport valid.

Confirm the document remains valid on the actual test date, not only at registration.

Check legibility

The name, birth date, photograph, signature and issuing information must be readable. Damage or wear can make verification difficult.

Contact official support if a document feature is unclear rather than expecting the administrator to accept it.

Check the photograph

The ID must contain a recent, recognisable photograph. The person checking in must clearly match it.

Significant appearance change or document damage should be resolved before the appointment.

Check the signature

A qualifying ID must include the holder’s signature under general current requirements.

Do not alter an official document. At a test center, use an acceptable second ID when current location rules permit it to supply a missing element.

Understand the second-ID rule at centers

If one acceptable test-center ID lacks an element, current guidance may require a second acceptable ID for the location containing the missing feature.

A second unacceptable card does not repair the first. Verify both documents in the country selector.

Know common unacceptable IDs

GMAC lists expired IDs, passport cards, Social Security cards, draft cards, credit cards, student or employee IDs and university letters as unacceptable.

It also rejects photocopies, selfies, portraits and IDs that substitute a physical description for a photograph.

Do not use a student ID

A university card proves an affiliation but does not meet GMAT identity standards.

Use only the government-issued or other documents explicitly accepted for the testing location.

Do not use a university letter

A letter from a college or university is listed as unacceptable identification.

Admission, enrolment or recommendation documents cannot replace test-day ID.

Do not rely on a renewal receipt

Renewal paperwork does not make an expired passport valid under current GMAT guidance.

Plan enough time to receive the new original document before scheduling or test day.

Audit the mba.com profile before booking

Compare profile name, date of birth and citizenship with the intended physical ID before choosing an appointment.

Correct errors through official support. Do not create another account to bypass identity or policy limits.

Start profile corrections early

Current policy says personal account information changes must be completed at least 72 hours before the exam, while demographic changes can require more processing and documents.

Treat 72 hours as a final boundary, not a planning target. Start as soon as a mismatch is found.

Save support confirmation

Keep case numbers, emails and account updates related to a legitimate identity correction.

A support message does not replace the required ID, but it helps document that the account was corrected.

Request an exceptional approval when needed

Refugees, people granted political asylum or candidates unable to meet location-specific ID requirements may contact GMAT test security.

Current guidance advises contact at least 10 business days before the planned scheduling and requires approval before booking.

Do not schedule before exception approval

An email asking a question is not approval. Wait for the official security decision and follow any special instructions.

Record the permitted document, route, location and validity of the approval.

Prepare for test-center verification

Present the valid original ID at check-in. Staff may capture a digital photograph, signature and palm-vein pattern where permitted.

Follow the Test Taker Rules & Agreement and administrator instructions. Refusing required verification prevents testing.

Prepare for online verification

The online process captures a digital photograph of the candidate and valid original ID for live proctor review.

Use adequate light and a clear camera. Keep the document available throughout check-in as directed.

Match the uploaded and physical ID

Online security compares the presented original ID with registration and captured identity information.

Do not upload one document and plan to present a different, mismatched document without official guidance.

Keep the ID within permitted reach

At a center, follow staff instructions for permitted items and storage. Online, the ID is one of the limited items allowed near the workstation.

Do not place it in inaccessible luggage after check-in begins.

Protect identity data

Use only official GMAC, mba.com or authorised test-delivery channels for identity documents.

Do not send passport images to tutors, unofficial agents or public groups. Redact unnecessary details from personal planning records.

Create an ID inventory

Record document type, issuing country, exact name, birth date, expiry, photograph, signature, condition and whether the live location rule accepts it.

Store only the checklist, not sensitive document numbers, in a shared planning file.

Run a 30-day ID audit

One month before testing, verify the country rule, profile match, document validity and any exception or replacement timeline.

Start renewal or correction immediately when a gap appears.

Run a seven-day ID audit

Recheck the live ID page, physical document, appointment route, exact account name and birth date.

Confirm no last-minute location change altered the applicable rule.

Run a night-before check

Place the valid original ID with the appointment confirmation or online workstation materials.

Verify that the correct current document, not an expired copy, was selected.

Handle a questioned document calmly

Present any officially acceptable second ID at a center and follow administrator or proctor instructions.

Do not offer unrelated cards or digital images. Record the administrative facts afterward and use official support.

Understand the consequence of non-compliance

If the ID is missing, invalid or mismatched, you will not be permitted to test and the fee can be forfeited.

Prevention requires early document and account verification, not a test-day exception request.
