Understand Multi-Source Reasoning
Official GMAT content says Multi-Source Reasoning requires careful examination of information from text passages, tables, graphics or a combination of these formats.
Questions can ask you to recognise discrepancies, draw inferences or determine whether a source is relevant.
Use the current Data Insights context
Multi-Source Reasoning belongs to the 20-question, 45-minute Data Insights section. It can combine math, data analysis and verbal reasoning.
Practise it alongside the other four formats so interface changes and source switching do not disrupt section pacing.
Preview the source set
Scan source labels, format, date, unit and topic before deep reading. Build a mental inventory of where definitions, outcomes and constraints are located.
The preview is orientation, not a full memorisation pass. Its purpose is to make later evidence retrieval targeted.
Build a compact source map
Assign each source a short role such as proposal, sales table, customer survey or policy memo. Record one key contribution and one limitation.
A useful map tells you where to return; it does not duplicate every number or sentence.
Read the question carefully
Official strategy emphasises understanding what the question asks. Identify whether the task is relevance, consistency, inference, calculation or evaluation.
Different tasks may use the same sources but require different evidence standards.
Open only relevant sources
Use the task and source map to choose where to begin. A pricing calculation may need a table and a definition but not a background memo.
Check other sources only when a condition, date or conflicting definition can alter the result.
Separate facts from claims
A table entry is a reported measurement; a manager’s explanation is a claim about that measurement. Do not give both the same evidentiary status.
Label forecasts, opinions and assumptions so they are not mistaken for observed results.
Track who says what
Identify the source owner, audience and purpose. One source can report another person’s view without endorsing it.
Attribution matters when a question asks what a particular analyst, department or document supports.
Track dates and time windows
Confirm whether data refer to calendar year, fiscal year, quarter, survey date or forecast period. Sources from different dates may not be directly comparable.
A later memo can update or supersede an earlier assumption; it does not automatically prove the earlier statement was unreasonable then.
Track definitions
Terms such as customer, active user, revenue and completion rate may be defined differently across sources. Preserve the definition attached to each dataset.
An apparent contradiction can disappear when populations or measurement rules differ.
Track units and scale
Write whether values are units, thousands, millions, percentages, currency or rates. Check axis scale and any multiplier in a heading.
Convert before comparing and retain enough precision to answer the question accurately.
Recognise discrepancies
When sources disagree, identify the exact claim and compare population, period, unit, method and definition. Do not average incompatible values.
The discrepancy may be intentional evidence about uncertainty, bias or a changed condition.
Resolve apparent contradictions
Two statements can both be true if one concerns total sales and the other market share, or if they cover different regions.
Test whether scope reconciles the sources before declaring them inconsistent.
Draw supported inferences
Official strategy says to choose answers with the most support from the provided data. Combine only sources that share compatible terms and conditions.
Prefer conservative conclusions and reject choices that require an unstated causal assumption.
Determine source relevance
A source is relevant when it can change the answer to the task. Topic similarity alone does not make it necessary.
State what information is missing, then ask which source could supply exactly that information.
Use text sources effectively
Track the sequence of ideas, qualifiers and causal claims. Official guidance notes that text passages can build ideas step by step.
Summarise each paragraph’s role and return to exact wording for scope-sensitive decisions.
Use tables effectively
Inspect headings, row definitions, totals, footnotes and missing values before calculation. Determine whether percentages use row, column or overall totals.
Filter mentally to the rows that match every condition in the question.
Use graphics effectively
Identify chart type, axis labels, legend, baseline and scale. A truncated axis can make a modest change look dramatic.
Combine a graphic with text only after confirming that both use the same metric and period.
Combine qualitative and quantitative evidence
A numerical trend may support one part of a proposal while a policy constraint blocks implementation. A correct answer must respect both.
Do not let a precise number overpower a directly relevant verbal condition.
Handle yes-no statement sets
Judge each statement independently under the specified condition. One false statement does not determine the status of the others.
For each, identify the minimum supporting evidence and check every qualifier before selecting yes or no.
Handle multi-part questions
Interactive questions may require multiple responses. Verify every column, statement or part before submitting because one overlooked component can make the response incomplete.
Use a final interface check after the reasoning is complete.
Use the calculator selectively
An on-screen calculator is available in Data Insights. Estimate first, then use it when arithmetic rather than reasoning is consuming time.
After calculation, check units, denominator, sign and whether the result answers the actual question.
Avoid outside subject knowledge
Official strategy says all information needed is provided and outside knowledge should not influence the answer. Treat unfamiliar industries as structured datasets.
Real-world expectations cannot override definitions and facts supplied in the source set.
Recognise common answer traps
Traps may use a true fact from the wrong source, combine incompatible periods, reverse a relationship or exaggerate a supported trend.
Another trap answers a broader business question rather than the exact task presented.
Manage source switching
Return to a source with a specific question, such as checking one definition or date. Unplanned rereading consumes time without improving evidence.
Keep the compact map visible on the noteboard when a set contains several tabs or formats.
Manage pacing
The section averages 2 minutes 15 seconds per question, but a source set can support multiple questions and creates uneven timing. Use section checkpoints.
Invest in an accurate source map once, then reuse it across questions without assuming every new task needs every source.
Use Review and Edit
After all section questions are answered, review as time permits and edit up to three responses. Bookmark for a specific unit, source or attribution doubt.
Change only when corrected evidence identifies the earlier mistake, not because the source set feels complex.
Build an MSR error log
Record task, relevant sources, missed definition or date, selected trap, source switches, time, confidence and the earliest wrong decision.
Classify errors as mapping, relevance, discrepancy, inference, calculation, attribution or interface completion.
Practise transfer
After reviewing one set, use a fresh set with different source formats but the same reasoning task. Transfer prevents memorisation of one dataset.
Mix inference, discrepancy and relevance questions so the stem determines how sources are used.
