Know the RC inference task

Official exam content lists inference among the reading skills tested in the current GMAT Verbal section.

An RC inference asks what follows from, is implied by or can be concluded from passage information, not what seems likely in real life.

Understand the current Verbal context

The current Verbal section includes 23 Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions in 45 minutes.

RC inference uses passage evidence, while Critical Reasoning inference may use a shorter information set. The proof standard remains disciplined.

Replace everyday inference

Read the passage carefully

Official strategy guidance recommends reading and analysing a passage before its questions and focusing on key words and phrases while maintaining context.

Identify the target

The stem may ask about a person, theory, event, paragraph or passage-wide implication. Mark the exact target before searching.

A correct inference about the wrong group or period is still wrong for the question.

Locate the evidence zone

Return to the relevant lines and read enough surrounding context to capture qualification, contrast and attribution.

Do not search only for repeated words from the options. Meaning may be paraphrased.

Paraphrase the evidence

State the relevant passage idea in simple English before evaluating choices. Preserve who believes it and how strongly it is stated.

This prevents attractive wording from replacing the actual evidence.

Use the proof test

For each serious option, identify the sentence or combination of statements that establishes it.

If you cannot show the bridge without adding a fact, the choice is unsupported.

Use the counterexample test

Imagine a situation where all relevant passage statements remain true but the choice is false. If that is possible, the choice does not follow.

The counterexample must respect definitions, conditions and facts supplied by the passage.

Control scope

Match who, what, when and where. Evidence about one study cannot automatically support a conclusion about all research.

A narrow inference may be correct when a broad one is not, but narrowness alone does not guarantee support.

Control intensity

Words such as some, many, most, all, may, likely and must express different strength.

The option’s claim cannot exceed the passage. A cautious passage rarely proves always, only or impossible.

Track viewpoint ownership

Identify whether a claim belongs to the author, a researcher, a critic or a traditional theory.

An option can repeat a supported idea but attribute it to the wrong speaker, making it false.

Track time frames

Past, present and predicted future claims are not interchangeable. Note dates, periods and sequence.

A historical observation does not prove a current condition unless the passage supplies continuity.

Track populations

Keep sample, subgroup and full population distinct. A finding about respondents may not apply to nonrespondents.

Look for explicit representativeness or rules before generalising.

Track definitions

Use terms as the passage defines them, especially when ordinary meanings differ.

An inference based on a looser everyday definition can expand the category beyond what the author permits.

Combine details carefully

Some inferences require linking statements from different sentences or paragraphs. Write the chain briefly and verify every connection.

The fact that two ideas appear in the same passage does not establish a relationship between them.

Handle conditional statements

If the passage says A leads to B, A supports B under the stated conditions. B does not automatically support A.

Do not reverse, negate or broaden a conditional rule. A simple arrow can protect direction.

Handle comparisons

Preserve the same measure and group when combining greater-than or less-than statements.

A comparison of growth rates does not establish which group has the larger total without starting values.

Handle numerical evidence

Distinguish totals, percentages, rates, averages and changes. Label denominators and units.

A percentage can fall while a total rises, and an average does not describe every member.

Handle cause language

Sequence and correlation do not prove causation unless the passage provides the connection.

Prefer an association claim when the text supports only association. Do not add an alternative cause either unless stated.

Handle author attitude

An inference about attitude must follow from evaluative words, selection of evidence or treatment of views.

Distinguish mild reservation from rejection and measured support from enthusiasm.

Handle absence of evidence

The passage’s failure to mention a fact does not prove the fact is false. Silence supports only limited inferences.

Be cautious with choices claiming no examples, no causes or no disagreement merely because none was discussed.

Handle negative wording

Not all means at least one exception, not that none qualify. No evidence found is not proof of impossibility.

Paraphrase double negatives and except stems before comparing options.

Test every clause

A choice joined by and needs support for both parts. One proven clause cannot rescue another unsupported one.

Pay attention to extra modifiers at the end of an option. A final scope shift often creates the trap.

Distinguish inference from stated detail

A stated-detail answer paraphrases something explicit. An inference may combine or logically extend statements while remaining provable.

Both require passage support, but do not demand an exact sentence for a valid inference.

Distinguish inference from main idea

A main-idea answer captures passage-wide purpose. An inference may concern a small detail or relationship.

Do not choose the most central idea when the stem asks what follows about a specific target.

Distinguish RC from CR additions

In strengthen or weaken Critical Reasoning, an option can introduce a new fact. In RC inference, the answer must come from passage evidence.

Ask whether the choice is already supported, not whether adding it would make the author’s view stronger.

Reject plausible stories

A choice may be sensible in the real world and fit the passage topic while remaining unproved.

Require textual support. Familiarity is not evidence.

Reject word-match traps

Wrong answers often repeat passage vocabulary while changing relationship, scope or intensity.

Compare meaning rather than matching nouns. Correct answers may use different words.

Reject extreme answers

Only, always, never, completely and impossible require strong evidence. Test whether the passage actually closes every alternative.

Do not reject strong language automatically; accept it when equally strong passage language proves it.

Reject reversed answers

Common traps reverse cause and effect, comparison order, category membership or who holds a view.

Rewrite the relation from the passage and the option in parallel form.

Use elimination systematically

Label each wrong choice with a precise reason: unsupported, wrong scope, too strong, reversed, wrong viewpoint or outside knowledge.

The process builds faster recognition across future passages.

Use official questions for calibration

Maintain an RC inference error log
