GRE for MS Guide for Nepali Students explains how to verify Master of Science programme policies, build section-specific score targets, connect GRE evidence with prerequisites and research, and manage optional testing, reporting and deadlines. Because MS fields vary widely, this guide uses a programme-by-programme method instead of one universal score.
Information checked on 25 July 2026 against current ETS GRE scoring, reporting, interpretive and holistic-admissions guidance. MS requirements change by department, degree and intake, so verify every final detail on the official programme page.

MS is a broad degree category
A Master of Science can cover computer science, engineering, data science, biology, psychology, economics and many other fields. Their preparation and admission processes differ.
Research the full degree title, department, track, thesis or non-thesis route, campus, intake and applicant category. “GRE for MS” is not one policy.
Verify the exact programme policy
Open the official department admissions page and identify whether the GRE is required, optional, recommended, not required or not accepted.
Check a central graduate-school page too, but let the programme’s specific rule govern when the university clearly delegates the decision.
Check the correct admission cycle
A department may change testing rules between intakes. Confirm the term and application year attached to the page or PDF.
Save the source URL and access date. Ask the programme when an archived page, application portal and live page disagree.
Understand the GRE score scales
Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored from 130 to 170 in one-point increments. Analytical Writing is scored from 0 to 6 in half-point increments.
Keep all three measures in your worksheet. ETS advises score users to consider them independently because fields require different skills.
Do not depend on an informal total
Applicants often add Verbal and Quant and discuss a 260-340 sum. That can be a shorthand, but it is not a substitute for separate section interpretation.
A programme may care more about the section connected to its curriculum. Record section evidence even when a third-party page lists only a total.
There is no universal GRE score for MS
No single score guarantees admission across MS programmes. Policies, applicant pools, prerequisites, funding and review practices vary.
Use official minimums, recommendations and admitted-student statistics where available. Mark all other targets as personal planning estimates.
Classify programme score evidence
Label each number as minimum, recommended, average, median, range or percentile guidance. Include the cohort and year.
A minimum may establish eligibility but does not describe competitiveness. A median describes a group and is not a cutoff.
Build an MS policy worksheet
Create columns for university, department, full degree name, track, intake, GRE policy, Verbal evidence, Quant evidence, writing evidence, prerequisites, deadline, source and questions.
Use one row per programme and track. Two MS degrees at the same university may have different rules.
Map section relevance to the curriculum
Review required courses, methods and learning outcomes. Quant may be particularly relevant for mathematically intensive study, while Verbal and writing can support research reading and communication.
This mapping helps prioritise preparation, but do not invent admissions weights. Use programme guidance when published.
Set an evidence-based Quant target
Capture any official Quant minimum, recommendation or admitted-student statistic. Compare it with the quantitative demands of prerequisite courses.
If no number is published, use several relevant official programmes to form a planning band. Do not claim the department set it.
Set an evidence-based Verbal target
Review any programme-level Verbal evidence and the reading or communication demands of the field. International applicants should not ignore this section automatically.
Use current percentiles only as context. A percentile does not create an admission probability.
Set an Analytical Writing target
Analytical Writing measures the quality of a timed Issue response on a 0-6 scale. Some programmes may publish a writing expectation while others do not.
Connect the result with the statement of purpose, research writing and other evidence. The GRE essay does not replace required writing samples.
Check prerequisite courses first
List required mathematics, programming, laboratory, statistics, theory or discipline courses. Compare them with official transcripts and course content.
A high GRE score does not waive a missing prerequisite unless the programme explicitly says so. Plan approved prerequisite completion early.
Review degree equivalency
Check the programme’s required prior degree, duration, accreditation or credential evaluation process for international applicants.
Do not assume every Nepali bachelor’s degree is evaluated identically. Follow the university’s official credential instructions and document rules.
Separate GRE from English proficiency
The GRE does not automatically satisfy TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo or another English requirement. Universities set their own waiver conditions.
Track English-test deadlines and score-reporting separately. Obtain written confirmation when relying on a waiver.
Understand optional GRE policies
Optional means the programme permits a choice under current rules. It does not tell every applicant to submit or omit scores.
Read how the programme says submitted scores are used and whether non-submitters need alternative evidence.
Decide whether an optional score adds value
Ask whether the score supplies strong, relevant and current evidence beyond the transcript, prerequisites and experience. Compare it with any official programme context.
Also consider preparation time, cost and deadline risk. Make the decision separately for each programme when policies differ.
Connect GRE with the transcript
Map relevant section strengths to completed courses and academic progression. Use accurate grades and official documents.
If a semester was unusually weak, explain context only through an allowed field and focus on verified later evidence rather than excuses.
Connect GRE with research experience
For research-oriented MS routes, document the question, methods, tools, contribution and result of each project. Explain what you learned and how it connects to the programme.
A strong GRE result cannot substitute for required research preparation, but it can complement evidence of academic reasoning.
Connect GRE with technical projects
For computing, engineering or data programmes, select projects that demonstrate relevant design, analysis, implementation and evaluation. State your personal contribution.
Use a portfolio or repository only when requested or permitted. Keep claims reproducible and avoid exposing confidential work.
Connect GRE with the statement of purpose
The statement should explain preparation, academic interests, programme fit and future direction. It should not become a paragraph that merely repeats scores.
Use section evidence only when it clarifies readiness for a genuine transition or addresses a specific application question.
Plan recommendations
Choose recommenders who can describe relevant academic, research or professional work under the programme’s instructions. Provide deadlines and programme context.
Letters should contain observed examples. A recommender does not need to reinterpret your percentile.
Check thesis, project and coursework routes
A thesis MS may emphasise research alignment and supervision, while a coursework or professional route may prioritise different preparation and outcomes.
Verify whether the GRE policy applies equally across tracks. Record separate rows when it does not.
Check faculty-contact rules
Some research programmes encourage contact with potential supervisors; others ask applicants not to contact faculty before admission.
Follow the stated process. A concise research-specific message is more useful than sending a GRE score without academic context.
Distinguish the General and Subject Tests
The GRE General Test and GRE Subject Tests are separate assessments. A programme may require, recommend or ignore a Subject Test independently.
Do not assume a General Test score covers a Subject Test request. Verify the exact test name and reporting deadline.
Use current percentile data
Percentile ranks show the percentage of a reference group scoring below a score. They do not represent the percentage of correct answers.
Use the current ETS interpretive table and record its year. Compare field-level data cautiously and keep programme evidence primary.
Track official practice performance
Use current POWERPREP tests under realistic timing. Record section scores, pacing, wrong answers, guesses, slow correct answers and answer changes.
Build a stable range rather than trusting one peak. Repair high-impact weaknesses before consuming another fresh official form.
Schedule from the earliest deadline
Funding or priority deadlines may arrive before a general final deadline. Work backward from the earliest date that matters.
Include preparation, appointment availability, official-score release, department processing, recommendations and document delivery.
Allow score-release time
ETS says official General Test scores are normally available in the account 8-10 days after testing. The programme may need more time to match them.
Use a buffer and monitor the portal. Keep the ETS confirmation and application ID for any follow-up.
Use score recipients accurately
The GRE test fee currently includes up to four recipients on test day. Confirm the institution and department code and understand ScoreSelect before choosing.
Some programmes accept self-reported scores initially, while others need official reports by the deadline. Follow the exact instruction.
Understand score validity
GRE scores are reportable for five years following the test date under current ETS policy. Confirm the exact date in the account or ETS date tool.
A programme can apply its own recency rule. Check both ETS reportability and departmental acceptance.
Make a retake decision
Compare the current sections with programme evidence, stable practice, deadline and the likely improvement from a specific correction plan.
Retake when the expected gain matters to the shortlist and leaves enough reporting time. Protect time for the statement, recommendations and prerequisite work.
Research funding separately
Assistantships, scholarships and fellowships can have separate eligibility, nomination and deadlines. A GRE score does not guarantee funding.
Track award type, value, duties, duration, renewal and application route. Connect relevant scores with the complete evidence requested.
Verify current official sources
Use the official ETS score-reporting page, ETS score-use guidance and each MS programme’s official page.
Recheck shortly before submission because departmental policies and deadlines can change.
Follow a seven-step MS GRE plan
Define the exact field; build the shortlist; verify each policy; map prerequisites and section targets; prepare with official tests; complete the whole application; then report before the earliest deadline.
Update the worksheet whenever a programme, track or intake changes.
Connect GRE preparation with MS applications
For MS research, documents and overseas-study planning, visit MKS Education. For structured GRE preparation, explore MKS Prep. Verify final department policies directly.
Bring the programme worksheet to counselling so score advice is tied to prerequisites and actual targets.

No. Policies vary by department, degree and intake; verify each programme directly.
What GRE score is good for MS admission?
There is no universal score; compare Verbal, Quant and writing with official programme evidence.
Is 300 enough for an MS?
A combined number alone cannot answer that; check section requirements, prerequisites and the complete profile.
Does GRE replace an English test for MS?
Not automatically; universities set separate English-proficiency and waiver policies.
How early should I take the GRE for MS?
Allow preparation, 8-10 day score availability, department processing and a possible retest before the earliest funding or admission deadline.
