Understand the process task

A process diagram shows how something is produced, changes or moves through stages. It may describe manufacturing, recycling, a natural cycle or the operation of a system.

The response should explain the process clearly to a reader who cannot see every label. It is descriptive, not an opinion essay.

Read the prompt and labels

Identify the subject, process type and any instruction about summarising or comparing. Read every printed label before planning.

Technical terms supplied by the diagram can be used accurately. Do not replace them with uncertain synonyms.

Find the starting point

Locate the first input, raw material, event or natural condition. Arrows, numbering and labels normally reveal where the sequence begins.

When a cycle has no true beginning, choose a logical stage and state that the process is cyclical in the overview.

Find the ending point

Identify the final product, output, destination or stage that returns to the beginning. This helps define the complete scope.

A response that stops before the final arrow fails to cover the whole process.

Count the main stages

Group tiny mechanical details into meaningful stages and note any branches that later rejoin. The overview can mention the approximate number of stages.

Do not create a separate sentence for every icon when several belong to one operation.

Identify the transformation

Ask what changes from beginning to end: raw material to product, water to vapour and back, waste to reusable material or another broad result.

This transformation forms the core of the overview and connects the stages into a meaningful process.

Write the overview

State whether the process is linear or cyclical, where it begins and ends, and the main transformation or number of stages. Avoid detailed measurements in the overview.

Make the overview visible and accurate. It demonstrates understanding beyond copying labels.

Organise body paragraphs

Divide a long process into early and later stages, or input, treatment and output. Keep the sequence clear across paragraph boundaries.

Use paragraphing to support the reader, not to separate every stage mechanically.

Use sequencing language

Use initially, next, after this, once, subsequently, before and finally when they express the real order. Vary grammar so the response does not become a list.

Connect simultaneous or conditional stages accurately. Do not write then when two branches happen at the same time.

Use passive voice where natural

Manufacturing diagrams often focus on the material rather than the worker, making passive forms useful: the material is heated or the parts are assembled.

Passive voice is not compulsory in every sentence. Use active forms when the diagram identifies a natural agent or machine clearly.

Choose tense accurately

Processes presented as general facts normally use the present simple. Historical or future diagrams can require another tense based on the prompt.

Keep the tense consistent with the visual. Do not switch to past merely because the diagram appears before the response.

Describe inputs and outputs

Name materials, energy, waste and final products when shown. Explain where an input enters and what emerges from a stage.

Do not infer chemical changes or purposes not labelled or visually demonstrated.

Describe branching stages

When the process splits, explain both routes and where they lead or rejoin. Use while, meanwhile or separate clauses when appropriate.

Check that no branch is omitted. A smaller arrow can still represent an essential stage.

Describe cycles

For a natural cycle, explain how the final stage leads back to an earlier condition. The overview should identify that repetition.

Choose a logical starting point and maintain direction. Do not imply a fixed first event when the process is continuous.

Avoid unsupported explanation

Do not add why a machine uses a temperature, how long an unlabeled stage takes or why a natural event occurs. Report only the diagram.

Unsupported detail can reduce task achievement by moving away from the supplied information.

Control time and word length

Write at least 150 words and use about 20 minutes. Plan the stage groups first so that the final response remains complete and selective.

Preserve about 40 minutes for Task 2, which contributes more to the Writing score.

Review language and coverage

Check the starting point, final output, all major stages, arrows, units and labels. Then review articles, agreement, passive forms and punctuation.

Use the four official criteria when analysing feedback. Rewrite the response and apply the method to a new process.
