UK Mobile SIM and Phone Contract Guide for Nepali Students

UK Mobile SIM and Phone Contract Guide for Nepali Students explains how pay-as-you-go, rolling SIM-only and fixed contracts differ, what providers must disclose, and how to keep or change a UK number safely. The cheapest headline price is not always the best deal when coverage, data allowance, price increases, contract length and international use are included.

Information checked on 24 July 2026 against current Ofcom guidance. Prices and provider offers change frequently, so compare coverage and written contract terms at the student’s actual UK postcode.

Start with coverage, not advertising

Mobile performance varies by network, building and location. Check Ofcom’s coverage information and the provider’s map for the accommodation, campus and regular commute.

A cheap unlimited plan is poor value if indoor reception is unusable. Ask housemates about real experience, but remember that phone model and room position can affect signal.

Pay as you go for a flexible start

PAYG can suit a newly arrived student who needs a UK number before opening a bank account or building a local payment history. The user adds credit or buys a short bundle without a long airtime term.

Check expiry, auto-renewal and out-of-bundle rates. A low bundle price can become expensive if data runs out and usage moves to standard charges.

Rolling SIM-only plans

A monthly rolling SIM-only plan combines calls, texts and data while keeping cancellation more flexible than a long fixed term. Ofcom notes that SIM-only deals are often cheaper than plans including a handset.

Confirm whether the plan renews automatically, the notice process and any scheduled price change. Keep the written order summary.

Fixed SIM-only contracts

A 12-, 18- or 24-month SIM-only contract can reduce the monthly price but creates a commitment. Leaving before the minimum term may trigger an early termination charge.

Match the term to the expected UK stay. A one-year course does not automatically justify a two-year contract.

Handset and airtime agreements

A deal that includes a phone can have separate handset finance and airtime components. Ofcom says an airtime service contract should not exceed 24 months, while longer handset finance must be separate.

Read both agreements. Switching the airtime provider may not cancel the remaining device payments.

Contract summary before consent

Ofcom says the provider must give a written contract summary before the customer agrees. It should include key charges, contract length and cancellation process.

For a bundle the summary can be longer, but the essential figures should be clear. Save this document because it is the strongest reference if a sales promise later differs.

Price rises during the contract

A contract can specify a monthly price increase on a stated date. Ofcom says the pounds-and-pence amount and timing should be clear at the point of sale.

If a provider increases the price beyond what was agreed, it must normally give at least one month’s notice and a right to exit without penalty. An increase already disclosed in the contract may not provide that exit right.

Allowances and extra charges

Check data, calls, texts, picture messages, voicemail, premium numbers and charges after the allowance is used. Inclusive minutes do not cover every number.

Set spending controls or alerts where available. Wi-Fi does not prevent mobile data use if the connection drops.

Calling Nepal and international add-ons

Calls from the UK to Nepal can be outside standard inclusive minutes. Compare an international add-on, internet calling and the provider’s per-minute rate.

Check both call and connection charges. Do not assume that an app call is free when mobile data roaming or out-of-bundle data is active.

Roaming outside the UK

UK roaming charges depend on the provider, destination and plan. Nepal is not automatically included because a package offers roaming in parts of Europe.

Before travel, check the daily fee, data limit, fair-use terms and how to disable roaming. Download tickets and maps on Wi-Fi where practical.

Credit checks and payment setup

A provider may use identity, address and credit checks for a fixed contract or handset finance. Requirements differ, so a new arrival may find PAYG or rolling SIM-only easier initially.

Never use a false address or another person’s identity. A deposit or upfront payment should appear in the provider’s genuine written terms.

Check whether the phone is compatible

Confirm the device supports the UK network frequencies, SIM or eSIM format and required services. Ofcom says providers cannot sell locked handsets, but an older imported phone can still have technical limits.

Back up the device before changing SIM or resetting network settings. Keep the IMEI recorded securely in case of loss.

Keep the same number with PAC

Ofcom’s Text to Switch process lets a customer text PAC to 65075. The provider should reply within one minute with a code valid for 30 days and information such as early termination charges.

Give the PAC to the new provider. Ofcom says the switch must complete within one working day.

Switch without keeping the number

Text STAC to 75075 when changing provider without keeping the old number. The STAC is also valid for 30 days and helps end the old mobile service through the switching process.

Update the university, bank, GP and account recovery settings before abandoning the old number.

Check contract status before leaving

Text INFO to 85075 to check whether the line is in contract and whether an early termination charge may apply. The provider’s app or account should also show the end date.

Ofcom requires end-of-contract notification and information about available deals. Compare rather than allowing an old plan to continue unnoticed.

Lost phone and SIM security

Contact the provider quickly to block a lost SIM and device. Change passwords for email, banking and university accounts if the phone could expose them.

A replacement SIM can affect one-time codes. Restore access through each service’s official recovery process rather than sharing codes with a caller.

Mobile contract scam warnings

  • An unsolicited caller demanding a one-time security code
  • A social-media SIM seller asking for passport and UKVI passwords
  • A deal without a written contract summary
  • A hidden mid-contract price not stated in pounds and pence
  • A request for cryptocurrency or gift-card payment
  • A fake PAC service charging for the official text process
  • A claim that all roaming or calls to Nepal are included

Step-by-step mobile setup checklist

  1. Check coverage. Test accommodation, campus and commute postcodes.
  2. Choose flexibility. Compare PAYG, rolling and fixed terms.
  3. Read the summary. Verify price, increases, length and cancellation.
  4. Check the phone. Confirm SIM format and network compatibility.
  5. Set spending alerts. Control data and out-of-bundle use.
  6. Review international costs. Check Nepal calls and roaming separately.
  7. Record the contract end. Recompare before automatic continuation.
  8. Switch through official codes. Use PAC, STAC or INFO as appropriate.

Common mobile plan mistakes

  • Choosing by data allowance without checking coverage
  • Signing a term longer than the expected UK stay
  • Ignoring a scheduled price rise
  • Confusing handset finance with airtime
  • Assuming calls to Nepal are inclusive
  • Using roaming without checking the destination rate
  • Cancelling before requesting a PAC
  • Sharing verification codes with a supposed provider agent

Frequently asked questions

Is PAYG or a contract better for a new student?

PAYG offers flexibility during arrival, while a contract may offer lower regular pricing. Compare coverage, documents, duration and total cost.

How do I keep my UK mobile number?

Text PAC to 65075, then give the code to the new provider. Ofcom says the code is valid for 30 days.

How do I check whether I am still in contract?

Text INFO to 85075 or check the provider account. Review any early termination charge before switching.

Can a mobile airtime contract last more than 24 months?

Ofcom says a residential service contract should not exceed 24 months. Longer handset finance must be separate from the airtime contract.

Are calls and roaming in Nepal included?

Not automatically. Check the plan’s international calling and Nepal roaming rates before calling or travelling.
