USA F1 Program Extension Guide for Nepali Students

USA F1 Program Extension Guide for Nepali Students explains how a student who cannot finish by the Form I-20 program end date may ask the DSO for an extension before that date, document a qualifying academic or medical reason, show a realistic completion plan and receive an updated Form I-20. More tuition, an unfinished course or a late request does not automatically extend F-1 status.

Information checked on 24 July 2026 using current DHS, SEVIS and Form I-20 guidance. A DSO decides the school extension process from the student’s record, so request a review well before the printed end date.

Read the current Form I-20 end date

Locate the program end date on the most recent Form I-20 and compare it with the remaining academic requirements. Do not rely only on a graduation ceremony or student-portal date.

Allow time for adviser evidence, funding review and DSO processing. A request sent on the final day may not be completed in time.

Understand what a program extension changes

A DSO-approved extension updates the expected completion date in SEVIS and produces a new Form I-20. It allows additional time to complete the same educational objective while maintaining F-1 requirements.

It does not guarantee academic success, renew the visa, extend a passport or independently authorise employment.

Request the extension before the end date

Form I-20 instructions tell an F-1 student who cannot finish on time to apply for an extension before the program end date. Once that date passes, the ordinary extension action may no longer be available.

Submit the school’s complete request early and retain confirmation. An appointment scheduled before the deadline may not be enough if required evidence is missing.

Maintain status while requesting

Continue full-time enrolment, attendance, reporting and authorised-employment compliance. An extension is designed for an otherwise eligible student who needs more academic time.

If there has been unauthorised work, failure to enrol or another violation, tell the DSO truthfully because a different remedy may be required.

Identify a qualifying academic reason

Regulatory guidance recognises compelling academic reasons such as a change of major, unexpected research problems or a change in research topic when they genuinely delay completion.

The academic adviser should explain the cause, remaining requirements and recommended new end date. A broad statement that the student wants more time is weak evidence.

Document a qualifying medical reason

A documented illness or medical condition can support an extension when it affected academic progress. Use the school’s required evidence from an appropriate licensed provider.

Protect unnecessary private detail while meeting the DSO’s documentation standard. A medical reduced course load and a program extension are related but separate SEVIS actions.

Know which delays are not normally acceptable

Delay caused only by academic probation or suspension is not a standard compelling reason for a program extension. Repeatedly dropping classes without an authorised basis may also indicate a status issue.

Ask the DSO to distinguish a genuine unexpected circumstance from poor planning or an unresolved violation.

Build a precise completion plan

List every remaining course, thesis, dissertation, practicum or examination and the term in which it will be completed. Obtain adviser confirmation.

The requested new date should match the real academic schedule, including research, defence and final submission where applicable.

Explain research or dissertation delays

Graduate research can encounter unexpected methods, data, equipment, ethics or topic problems. Document what changed, why it was not reasonably anticipated and how the revised plan resolves it.

Normal open-ended research without milestones is not a useful completion plan. Include concrete supervision and target dates.

Prepare updated funding evidence

Extra study time creates additional tuition, insurance, housing and living costs. The school may require proof that the student can finance the extended period before issuing the new Form I-20.

Use current and truthful sponsor, bank, scholarship or assistantship evidence. Explain any substantial change from the previous funding source.

Follow the school’s request process

Many schools require an online form, academic-adviser recommendation, financial evidence and a DSO appointment. Use the current international office instructions rather than an old form from another student.

Track whether the request is merely submitted, academically recommended or fully approved in SEVIS.

Review the new Form I-20

After DSO approval, check the new program end date, education level, major, funding and remarks. Sign the student attestation and keep the prior Form I-20.

Ask for correction immediately if the printed date or academic information does not match the approved plan.

Keep a copy of every supporting record

Retain the request, adviser letter, medical documentation where appropriate, funding evidence, approval notice and every Form I-20. These records show why and when the date changed.

Store them securely because a later visa, travel, transfer or employment application may ask about the program history.

Understand the visa and passport effect

A program extension does not renew an expired F-1 visa. A student maintaining status may remain inside the United States, but international travel can require a valid visa for reentry.

Passport validity must also be maintained. Review travel plans with the DSO after the extension is recorded.

Check on-campus employment

Qualifying on-campus employment can continue only while the student maintains status and follows hour and job rules. The extension itself does not expand permitted hours or job types.

Tell the DSO and employer about any date change that affects payroll or eligibility records.

Check CPT authorisation separately

CPT must remain an integral part of the curriculum and be separately authorised on the Form I-20 for the specific employer and dates. Extending the academic program does not automatically extend CPT.

Stop work on the current authorisation end date unless the DSO issues a valid new authorisation before additional work.

Protect post-completion OPT timing

The program end date anchors the post-completion OPT filing plan. If completion moves, ask the DSO how the extension changes the recommendation and filing window.

SEVIS guidance notes that post-completion OPT must be requested in SEVIS no later than the program end date. Do not let an unresolved extension and an OPT filing contradict each other.

Coordinate a transfer or change of level

A transfer to another school or a new education level is not the same as extending the existing program. Each uses a different SEVIS action and timeline.

Tell the DSO if another admission is pending so the record is not extended when it should instead be transferred or updated for a new level.

Act immediately after a missed deadline

If the Form I-20 end date has already passed without an extension, contact the DSO immediately. Do not backdate a letter or continue as though approval occurred.

Depending on the record, the student may need to consider reinstatement, departure and reentry with a new initial record, or other professional advice. Outcomes are case-specific.

Avoid fake medical or adviser letters

False evidence can create academic, immigration and professional consequences far beyond a denied request. No consultant can lawfully guarantee an extension by manufacturing a reason.

Use genuine records and let the DSO decide whether the documented facts meet the rule.

F1 extension warning signs

  • The Form I-20 end date is not checked until the final week
  • No qualifying academic or medical reason is documented
  • The adviser gives no realistic completion date
  • Funding for the added period is unexplained
  • A submitted form is mistaken for DSO approval
  • CPT or work is assumed to extend automatically
  • OPT is filed using a date that conflicts with the extension

F1 program extension workflow

  1. Check the deadline. Read the current Form I-20 end date.
  2. Meet the DSO. Explain the delay before that date.
  3. Document the reason. Obtain academic or medical support.
  4. Build the plan. List remaining requirements and a realistic end date.
  5. Show funding. Cover the added tuition and living period.
  6. Confirm approval. Review the SEVIS update and new Form I-20.
  7. Align other actions. Recheck travel, work, CPT, transfer and OPT dates.

Frequently asked questions

When must an F-1 extension be requested?

It must be requested and handled before the current Form I-20 program end date.

What reasons can support an extension?

Qualifying circumstances can include compelling academic reasons or a documented medical reason that genuinely delayed completion.

Does academic probation qualify?

Delay caused only by academic probation or suspension is not normally an acceptable program-extension reason.

Does a new Form I-20 renew the visa?

No. A program extension updates SEVIS and the Form I-20, but it does not renew the visa in the passport.

Does the extension also extend CPT?

No. CPT requires a separate DSO authorisation with its own employer and dates.
