USA Return to Nepal Guide for Nepali Students

USA Return to Nepal Guide for Nepali Students explains how to confirm the last authorised study or work date, preserve academic and immigration records, complete U.S. tax and account tasks, close housing and insurance, document departure, prepare baggage and enter Nepal with valid identity and a practical career handover. Returning home should be planned from official dates, not from the visa sticker alone.

Information checked on 24 July 2026 using current DHS, IRS, CBP, U.S. Department of State and Nepal Department of Immigration resources. Tax, travel, customs and airline rules can change.

Choose the lawful departure date

Confirm the Form I-20 program end date, EAD end date, any cap-gap or other case and the normal grace-period calculation with the DSO. Record the latest date and a safer planned date.

A visa expiration date does not extend F-1 status or employment.

Stop work on the authorised date

Tell the employer and payroll the last lawful work day under OPT, STEM OPT or another category. Return equipment and keep final pay and employment records.

Do not perform remote U.S. work from inside the United States after authorisation ends.

Inform the DSO of the plan

Ask whether any SEVIS update, OPT report, address change or departure evidence is needed. Keep the DSO’s response and the final Form I-20 set.

An informal goodbye to an adviser does not replace a required reporting process.

Coordinate F-2 family departure

Confirm each dependent’s passport, Form I-20, ticket, school withdrawal, insurance and records. The dependent timeline normally follows the F-1 principal.

Arrange child school transcripts, vaccination records and custody or consent documents where relevant.

Download the I-94 and travel history

Use the official CBP I-94 site to save the most recent admission record and available travel history before leaving. Check details for errors.

Keep boarding passes and itinerary as additional departure evidence.

Secure every immigration record

Store all Forms I-20, visas, passports, I-94s, EADs, USCIS receipts, decisions and employer or DSO letters. Keep physical originals protected in hand luggage.

These records may be needed for a future visa, petition, tax question or travel history.

Order final academic records

Wait for the degree conferral notation when required, then order official transcripts and confirm diploma delivery. Download authorised syllabi and project summaries before access ends.

Use the registrar’s process for records that must remain official.

Collect employment evidence

Request final offer and experience letters, job descriptions, pay statements, W-2 delivery information and supervisor contacts. Ask how future verification requests are handled.

Do not take confidential company files, source code, client data or licensed materials.

Prepare professional references

Ask references for permission, confirm their future contact details and share the type of role being targeted in Nepal. Send thanks and keep a separate reference list.

A university or employer account may be disabled later, so obtain a durable professional contact method with consent.

Build a lawful portfolio

Save public or authorised work samples, project explanations and measured outcomes. Remove confidential data and state individual contribution to group work.

Test access from outside the university network and from a private browser.

Review U.S. tax responsibilities

IRS guidance says tax treatment depends on resident or nonresident status and income. Preserve W-2, 1042-S, scholarship, payroll and prior-return records.

Leaving the United States does not cancel a required annual return or a later notice.

Check the departure-permit question

IRS Publication 519 describes sailing or departure permits and exceptions. Use the IRS interactive tool or qualified tax advice to determine whether Form 1040-C or Form 2063 applies.

Do not assume every F-1 student is either automatically required or automatically exempt.

Keep access for later tax filing

Maintain a secure email, U.S. taxpayer ID record, filing software or preparer access and a reliable mailing address. Decide how refunds or payments will be handled.

Never send an SSN or tax transcript through ordinary social messaging.

Resolve state and local taxes

A final federal filing does not answer every state or local obligation. Check the rules for the places where the student lived and worked.

Keep lease, move dates and income records that support residence questions.

Close housing properly

Give required notice, schedule inspection, return keys, clean, photograph condition and provide a deposit address. Keep the lease and move-out statement.

Do not rely on a roommate to remove the departing student’s contractual responsibility without landlord approval.

End utilities and subscriptions

Schedule electricity, gas, internet, phone, gym, storage and subscription closure or transfer. Save final bills and equipment-return receipts.

Check autopay after the final cycle and revoke charges only after legitimate balances are settled.

Plan health-insurance end dates

Confirm the last coverage day, claims deadline, prescriptions and travel coverage. Obtain medical, dental, vaccination and prescription records through secure channels.

Do not assume insurance lasts through the grace period or flight date.

Manage U.S. banking deliberately

Keep an account open only when needed for deposits, tax payments or refunds and when international access, fees and identity checks are understood. Update authentication methods.

Close unused cards and accounts through the bank’s documented process after pending transactions clear.

Transfer money lawfully

Compare bank transfer, regulated remittance and foreign-exchange costs. Keep source-of-funds and transfer records for large amounts.

Avoid carrying or transferring money through another person’s account to bypass reporting or verification.

Handle mail and final deliveries

Use a trusted forwarding option for tax forms, refunds and final statements. Update the university, employer, bank, insurer and government case separately.

Postal forwarding does not update USCIS or every private organisation.

Check airline baggage rules

Review the operating carrier’s current weight, dimensions, pieces, excess fees, batteries, electronics, medication and restricted-item rules for every segment.

A ticket seller’s summary may not reflect the operating airline or codeshare rule.

Review Nepal customs requirements

Check current Nepal Department of Customs and airport guidance for dutiable goods, currency, electronics, gifts and prohibited items before packing. Keep purchase receipts where useful.

Do not depend on an old social-media baggage list because allowances and enforcement can change.

Carry documents safely

Keep passport, ticket, academic originals, immigration records, medication and essential contacts in hand luggage. Store encrypted copies separately.

Do not place irreplaceable originals or lithium batteries in checked baggage when airline rules prohibit it.

Prepare for Nepal immigration

Nepal Department of Immigration guidance says Nepali citizens should present a valid passport or other accepted travel document at the immigration desk. Check current airport instructions before departure.

Family members travelling on foreign passports need the visa or other status applicable to them.

Create a 90-day Nepal return plan

List housing, phone, banking, health, credential recognition, networking and job-search actions for the first three months. Contact Nepal employers and professional bodies before arrival.

Translate U.S. experience into clear outcomes relevant to Nepal rather than assuming the institution’s name explains the work.

Expect a transition period

Reverse culture adjustment can affect routines, work expectations and relationships. Keep realistic financial runway, professional contact and health support.

Review the plan after 30 and 90 days, preserving the option to pursue lawful future study or travel with complete records.

Return warning signs

  • The flight is booked from the visa date instead of the status timeline
  • Work continues after the authorised employment end
  • Records exist only in an expiring school or employer account
  • Housing and utilities are left in the student’s name
  • U.S. tax filing and later mail access are ignored
  • Airline and Nepal customs rules are taken from an old post
  • Confidential employer material is carried as a portfolio
