UK ATAS Certificate Guide for Nepali Students explains who needs Academic Technology Approval Scheme clearance, how to check a CAH3 code, what the application asks for, current processing time and when a new certificate is required. ATAS is free but can take at least 30 working days, so students in sensitive postgraduate subjects should start before their Student visa window becomes urgent.
Information checked on 24 July 2026. ATAS subjects, processes and technical notices can change; use the current GOV.UK ATAS guidance and information supplied by the university.

What is ATAS?
The Academic Technology Approval Scheme is a UK security-clearance process for certain sensitive areas of postgraduate study and research. Appendix ATAS explains that the scheme aims to prevent knowledge or technology from contributing to advanced conventional military technology or weapons-of-mass-destruction programmes.
An ATAS certificate is separate from university admission, the CAS and the Student visa. The university identifies the course and CAH3 code, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office considers the ATAS application, and UKVI applies the immigration requirement.
Who needs an ATAS certificate?
A person who is not exempt by nationality can require ATAS when the CAS course is in a listed subject and leads to a master’s degree, PhD, another postgraduate qualification, or is a period of study or research forming part of an overseas postgraduate qualification.
It does not apply to every science, engineering or postgraduate course. The exact academic subject code, qualification level and activity determine the requirement. Ask the university to confirm rather than deciding from the course title alone.
Are Nepali students exempt?
Nepal is not among the nationalities exempt from the ATAS requirement in the current Appendix. A Nepali applicant still needs ATAS only if the particular course or research falls within the scheme; nationality by itself does not make every course subject to clearance.
A person with more than one nationality should use the current rules and the nationality tied to the application. Do not assume that residence in an exempt country creates an exemption.
What is a CAH3 code?
The Common Aggregation Hierarchy level 3 code classifies the subject area. The higher education institution normally includes the CAH3 code in the official offer or confirms it separately. The online checker uses that code and study information to indicate whether ATAS is required.
Do not choose a code by searching for the closest-sounding subject. A small difference can change the result. Obtain the exact code from the university’s international admissions, academic department or research office.
Which subjects can require ATAS?
Appendix ATAS contains the authoritative subject list. Sensitive areas can appear across engineering, physical sciences, computing, materials, biological sciences and related interdisciplinary research. A broad degree title may contain optional modules or a research project within a listed area.
Use the official checker with the institution-provided CAH3 code. Marketing descriptions, an old offer from another university or another student’s ATAS result do not prove the requirement for a different course.
ATAS for taught master’s courses
A taught postgraduate course can require ATAS even when it is not primarily a research degree. The application asks for the university, course and module information. Current student guidance says taught applicants should list all elective or optional modules; if none exist, list the core modules.
Copy accurate module titles from the current university information. Do not select modules only to avoid the scheme or invent a simplified curriculum.
ATAS for MRes and PhD study
Research applicants describe the nature and scope of the main project and list relevant core modules. The form also asks for the primary supervisor’s name. If a final project has not yet been allocated, the current guidance permits the institution’s description and potential research topics.
The statement should match the proposal agreed with the university. Ask the supervisor or admissions team to resolve uncertainty before submission because an unexplained difference can delay or undermine the application.
ATAS, CAS and Student visa order
Universities differ in when they issue a CAS, but Appendix Student records whether ATAS applies. When the Student route requires ATAS, the applicant must obtain the valid certificate before submitting the visa application.
A practical order is:
- Receive the postgraduate offer and exact CAH3 code.
- Confirm through the official checker that ATAS is required.
- Prepare and submit the free ATAS application.
- Receive the certificate and check every detail.
- Complete the university’s CAS process.
- Submit the Student visa with the ATAS certificate.

When should a student apply?
Apply as soon as the university provides the information needed and the course plan is stable. GOV.UK currently states that applications take at least 30 working days, or six weeks, and complex applications can take longer. Demand is higher from April to August.
There is no fast-track service. Starting close to the CAS or visa deadline can postpone enrolment. Work backwards from the university’s latest arrival date while leaving time for the separate Student visa decision.
Is the ATAS application free?
Yes. The official ATAS application has no fee. Do not pay a person who claims to sell clearance, fast-track access or a guaranteed positive decision.
An adviser may charge for legitimate application help, but they cannot influence the FCDO outcome. The applicant remains responsible for every submitted detail.
How to apply online
Create an account in the official Academic Technology Approval Scheme service, complete the form and submit it online. The live GOV.UK guidance currently warns applicants not to use a Gmail address because of an ongoing technical issue; use an alternative email address and monitor it carefully.
Save accurate reference material before beginning. The system does not accept duplicate applications, and only limited personal details can be changed after submission.
Personal and passport details
The application asks for full name, date of birth, current address and the passport that will be used for the visa. Enter names exactly and explain genuine history where the form asks. If a passport expires or is lost while the case is pending, email the ATAS team with the new passport details.
Check transliteration across the passport, university offer and academic records. Do not shorten names or use initials where full names are required.
Previous study and employment history
Provide complete previous-study information and relevant employment. If never employed, the current guidance says to state that it is not applicable or that you have never been employed. Explain gaps, including unemployment or full-time parenting, in the available text field.
Dates should align with the CV, university application and visa history. A truthful gap is better than invented employment that cannot be verified.
Referee requirements
The form asks for two referees you have ideally known for more than three years. Current guidance says one should be from the home country and the other an academic referee. If a home-country referee is unavailable because the applicant lives elsewhere, explain this and give an alternative academic or professional referee.
Use full given names and surnames, not initials. Ask permission, verify current contact details and choose people who can genuinely confirm the relevant history.
Funding information
The application asks how study in the UK will be financed. Provide the financial sponsor’s accurate details. If a funding decision is still pending, state that honestly as the current guidance directs.
ATAS funding information does not replace the Student visa financial requirement. Review the UK Student bank-statement guide for the separate 28-day rule and maintenance calculation.
Publications and academic work
List all published papers where applicable. Use exact titles, authorship, dates and publication details that can be checked. Distinguish a submitted manuscript, conference presentation, dissertation and formally published paper.
Do not create citations or improve a publication status. Current ATAS guidance says information is checked against academic and official records.
Write an accurate course or research description
The description should explain the actual programme in clear language while retaining technical accuracy. For research, define the nature and scope agreed with the supervisor. For taught study, use the real module set supplied by the institution.
A consultant or digital tool may help organise wording, but the applicant must verify every sentence. In March 2026, GOV.UK added a specific warning that false, altered or unverifiable information, including invented details produced with AI, can result in refusal.
Can AI help with an ATAS application?
Current guidance allows tools to improve clarity or structure, but they must not create, change or invent identity, qualifications, experience or research information. The applicant is responsible even when an adviser, colleague, agent or digital tool helps.
Use institutional source material, then check the final text against the offer, proposal, CV and records. Never submit a technical statement simply because it sounds convincing.
What can be changed after submission?
After submission, the online process currently allows changes only to email address, phone number and marital status. A passport change is reported to the ATAS team by email. Course, research and other substantive errors cannot simply be edited in the portal.
This makes pre-submission checking essential. Do not file a duplicate application to correct a mistake because the system does not accept duplicates.
How long is an ATAS certificate valid?
The certificate is valid for six months from its issue date for use in a visa application. Once linked to valid immigration permission, it covers the approved course or research for its duration, provided the details do not trigger a new requirement.
Do not obtain it so early that the six-month visa-use period expires before the Student application. Equally, do not wait until the visa deadline when processing itself takes at least six weeks.
What to do after approval
The certificate arrives by email, and the institution is also informed. Check the name, institution, course, CAH3 code and research details against the offer. Contact the ATAS team if anything is wrong.
Upload the certificate with the Student visa documents and give it to the university when requested. Keep the original email and file securely for later enrolment, extension or compliance checks.
When is a new ATAS certificate required?
A Student continuing an ATAS-controlled course must apply for a new certificate when the completion date is delayed by more than three months or when the course content or research proposal changes. Appendix ATAS requires the new application within 28 days of learning about the relevant change.
A new certificate can also be required for a visa extension, a different course or research project, or a move into another ATAS-relevant activity. Ask the university before changing modules, supervisor, project scope or end date.
ATAS when already in the UK
A student already holding UK permission can still require ATAS for a new course or research project. The institution must receive a valid certificate before allowing the new ATAS-controlled activity to begin.
Do not assume an earlier certificate covers another university or research area. ATAS clearance is tied to the approved details.
If the application is unsuccessful
A person cannot begin the controlled course or research without the required certificate. Current guidance says an applicant must wait 90 days before reapplying for the same course or research at the same institution with the same CAH3 code.
An application can be made for a different course or research area at the same institution, or at another institution, when genuine. ATAS refusal appeals are requested by contacting the ATAS team. Do not alter the academic plan only to evade a legitimate clearance decision.
ATAS scams and unsafe shortcuts
- Paying for a fake fast-track service when no official fast track exists
- Using a CAH3 code copied from another student
- Submitting invented referees, publications or employment
- Allowing an agent to control the email account
- Creating a duplicate application after a mistake
- Changing the research proposal after approval without checking the rule
- Uploading an altered certificate to the visa application
Use only the service linked from GOV.UK and communicate through the official ATAS email address where directed.
