UK Student Visa English Requirements for Nepali Students

UK Student Visa English Requirements for Nepali Students explains the B1 or B2 level a student may need, the accepted ways to prove English, when a Secure English Language Test is required, and what the CAS must record. The correct route depends on the course level, sponsor type and evidence accepted by UK Visas and Immigration, not simply on a university’s general admission score.

Information checked on 24 July 2026. Approved tests, providers and immigration rules can change, so confirm the live GOV.UK Student visa and SELT pages before booking a test or submitting an application.

What is the UK Student visa English requirement?

A Student visa applicant must usually show the ability to read, write, speak and understand English at the level set by the Immigration Rules. For a degree-level course or higher, the standard is equivalent to level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. For study below degree level, it is B1.

The English requirement forms part of the points-based Student route. It is separate from receiving an academic offer, paying a deposit or obtaining a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies. A student should confirm both the university’s admission condition and the immigration evidence that will appear on the CAS.

Why admission English and visa English are not identical

A university may set an IELTS, PTE or another score for admission based on the demands of a particular programme. UKVI uses immigration rules about level, evidence and approved assessment. Sometimes one result satisfies both purposes, but that should never be assumed.

For example, a university can require a higher score than the minimum it uses to establish CEFR B2. It can also accept an admission test that is not itself a Home Office-approved SELT when an eligible higher education provider assesses the applicant and records that assessment correctly on the CAS.

CEFR B2 for degree-level study

A bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, PhD and other qualifying degree-level courses normally require English equivalent to CEFR B2 in all four skills. B2 is a framework level, not one universal IELTS band or PTE number.

Each approved test has its own minimum grades for the relevant CEFR level. Use the Home Office table for the exact test and version being booked. A score from a non-UKVI version should not be treated as an approved SELT merely because its name looks similar.

CEFR B1 for below-degree study

Courses below degree level normally require CEFR B1 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. This may apply to certain further-education or pathway courses, depending on the qualification level and sponsor.

Do not decide the visa level from marketing labels such as diploma, foundation or pre-master’s alone. Ask the sponsor for the course level recorded on the CAS and the exact English evidence it will rely on.

Four accepted ways to prove English

The public Student visa guidance describes several routes. A student may qualify through a relevant UK school qualification, a degree awarded by a UK institution and taught in English, an overseas degree assessed by Ecctis, or an approved SELT.

For degree-level study, an eligible higher education provider with a track record of compliance may also assess the student’s English itself. The route used must fit the applicant’s facts and be reflected accurately in the CAS or application.

Using a Secure English Language Test

A Secure English Language Test is the standard route when the applicant has no other qualifying evidence or when the sponsor requires one. For the Student route, the test generally assesses all four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

The result must come from a test and provider on the current Home Office approved list, be taken at an approved location and normally be awarded within two years before the application. The unique test reference is used so UKVI can verify the result electronically.

Approved providers outside the UK

The GOV.UK SELT guidance currently lists IELTS SELT Consortium, LANGUAGECERT, Pearson and PSI Services as providers outside the UK. Provider availability varies by country, test centre and date.

Recognised names do not make every product approved. Examples on the current list include IELTS for UKVI, PTE Academic UKVI, specified LANGUAGECERT SELT products and Skills for English UKVI. Open the official list from GOV.UK and follow its link to an approved location before paying.

IELTS Academic versus IELTS for UKVI

IELTS Academic and IELTS for UKVI can test similar academic abilities, but their immigration status is not automatically interchangeable. If the visa evidence must be a SELT, book the exact UKVI-approved test at an approved centre.

An eligible HEP may accept another IELTS result for admission and assess English itself. That is a sponsor decision recorded on the CAS; it does not transform a normal IELTS result into a SELT. Ask the university which route it will use in writing.

PTE, LANGUAGECERT and Skills for English

Approved alternatives can include PTE Academic UKVI, specified LANGUAGECERT Academic or General SELT tests, and Skills for English UKVI. Product names and providers change, so a blog or preparation centre list can become outdated.

Match the booking page, test version, location and CEFR requirement against the current Home Office list. A general PTE, LANGUAGECERT or English certificate without the specified UKVI arrangement may not satisfy a SELT requirement.

All four components must meet the standard

Where multiple components are examined and awarded together, GOV.UK says the required scores must be achieved in all relevant components with the same provider as part of the combined assessment. A strong overall score does not repair a component below the required minimum.

Some providers may allow a component retake in defined circumstances. Check the provider’s current terms and confirm that the combined result remains acceptable under the Home Office rules before relying on it.

How long is a SELT valid?

The approved-test guidance says the result must normally have been awarded in the two years before the application date. The result includes a unique reference number that UKVI checks through the provider’s secure system.

Plan backwards from the expected visa submission, not only the university deadline. A result that was valid at admission can become too old before the visa application if the intake is deferred.

Higher education provider assessment

If the applicant will study at degree level or above, a higher education provider with a track record of compliance can assess English itself. Appendix English Language requires the sponsor to state on the CAS that it assessed the applicant and how it did so.

The CAS must confirm ability equivalent to B2 in all four components, subject to the specific rules for an eligible combined pre-sessional course. This route may use an interview, the sponsor’s test or other evidence, but the university controls its assessment policy.

What must the CAS say about English?

The CAS should show whether a SELT is required and how the sponsor assessed the applicant. Where an approved English test is used, sponsor guidance requires the name of the provider and the result for each component to be recorded.

Read the CAS statement before submitting the visa form. If the method, score or reference is wrong, ask the university to correct its sponsorship record. Do not try to explain away a material mismatch in a separate cover letter when the sponsor can fix the source record.

Using a UK degree taught in English

A degree-level qualification can prove English where it was taught in English and awarded by a UK institution, even if the student studied outside the UK. Keep the final certificate and any documents requested by the sponsor or UKVI.

The qualification must genuinely meet the stated conditions. A short course, professional certificate or partial programme is not automatically a UK degree-level qualification for this purpose.

Using an overseas degree taught in English

If a degree was awarded outside the UK but taught in English, the public guidance says the applicant needs an Ecctis assessment. Ecctis provides a code confirming that the qualification is equivalent to a UK bachelor’s degree or higher and was taught in English.

A university letter saying the medium of instruction was English is not, by itself, the Ecctis confirmation required by this route. Start the assessment early and ensure names, institution details and qualification records match the passport and application.

Using a UK school qualification

The Student visa page permits specified qualifications from a UK school when the applicant began the qualification while under 18. The listed examples include a GCSE, A level, Scottish National Qualification level 4 or 5, and Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English.

Most applicants educated entirely in Nepal will not use this route. It is included because the correct evidence depends on education history, not nationality alone.

Nationality-based exemptions and Nepal

Applicants from certain majority English-speaking countries and territories may not need to prove English, and a qualifying degree completed in one of those places may also create an exemption. Nepal is not on the exemption list in the current public guidance.

A Nepali passport therefore does not create a nationality exemption. A Nepali student may still qualify through a UK qualification, Ecctis, an approved SELT or eligible HEP assessment.

Pre-sessional English courses

A higher education provider with a track record of compliance can issue one CAS for an eligible combined pre-sessional and main degree-level course when the detailed conditions are met. Appendix Student currently limits the pre-sessional element to no more than three months and normally requires the main course to begin within one month after it ends.

Where the applicant is at B1 under the specific combined-course rule, the assessment must be by a method other than the sponsor’s own assessment, and the CAS must confirm that the sponsor expects the student to reach B2 by the end of the pre-sessional course. This is a narrow rule, not a general permission to apply below the required level.

English evidence and the credibility interview

Meeting a test score does not remove the genuine-student requirement. A caseworker can consider how naturally the applicant explains the course, institution, funding and career plan, including English ability where relevant.

Prepare to answer honestly in the language and manner requested. Memorised scripts, inconsistent academic explanations or another person coaching answers during a remote interview can undermine credibility even when a test result is valid.

Booking details must match the passport

The SELT guidance says the details used to book must match the identity document presented at the test location. The document must be current, valid, original and include a photograph.

Check name order, spelling, date of birth and passport number before payment. If a new passport is issued later, keep the old passport and ask the test provider and university how to document the change.

Protect the unique reference number

After a successful SELT, the provider gives a unique electronic reference, UKVI number or URN. The exact name depends on the provider. UKVI uses it to check the result online, and omission can lead to refusal.

Enter the reference exactly as issued and send it to the university if needed for the CAS. Do not edit a result sheet or invent a reference when an account cannot be accessed; resolve access directly with the provider.

Common English evidence mistakes

  • Booking a normal test when the university requires a UKVI-approved SELT
  • Using a test centre not shown as approved on the current Home Office list
  • Relying on an overall score while one component is below the required level
  • Submitting a result more than two years after it was awarded
  • Confusing a university admission waiver with a visa exemption
  • Assuming a medium-of-instruction letter replaces an Ecctis assessment
  • Entering the wrong unique test reference in the visa application
  • Failing to check how English is described on the CAS

How to verify the English section before applying

  1. Confirm the course level. Identify whether the CAS records degree-level or below-degree study.
  2. Ask the sponsor’s route. Find out whether it will use a SELT, HEP assessment, UK qualification or Ecctis.
  3. Check the current rule. Open the official Student visa English page.
  4. Verify the test. If a SELT is needed, confirm the exact provider, product and location.
  5. Meet every component. Compare all four scores with the approved CEFR table.
  6. Match identity details. Resolve name or passport differences early.
  7. Review the CAS. Check the method, provider, scores and reference as applicable.
  8. Enter the same evidence. Keep the online form consistent with the CAS and provider record.

English preparation timeline from Nepal

Start by checking target universities and course-specific scores before applications open. Allow time for preparation, a first test, result release and a possible retake. After an offer, confirm how the university will record English before paying a non-refundable deposit based on assumptions.

Coordinate the result with CAS and visa timing using the UK Student visa application timeline from Nepal. Financial evidence, TB screening, ATAS and English can progress on different schedules.

English requirement and university entry

Academic grades, subject prerequisites and English are separate admission checks. A student can meet B2 for immigration but miss a programme’s higher writing score, or receive an academic offer that remains conditional on English.

Use the UK university entry requirements guide to organise academic documents, then treat the CAS as the final sponsorship record for the visa file.

English evidence and the complete visa file

English is only one part of Student route eligibility. The applicant must also have a valid CAS, meet financial rules, provide a TB certificate when required, obtain ATAS where applicable and satisfy suitability and genuine-student requirements.

Cross-check the complete set in the UK Student visa requirements and documents guide. Never use a strong English score as a reason to overlook a date, fund or sponsorship problem.

Frequently asked questions

What English level does a Nepali student need for a UK Student visa?

Degree-level study normally requires CEFR B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Below-degree study normally requires B1 in all four components.

Does every Nepali student need IELTS for UKVI?

No. The requirement may be met through another approved SELT, an eligible HEP assessment, a qualifying UK qualification or an overseas degree assessed by Ecctis. The university and CAS must identify the valid route.

Can a university accept normal IELTS for a Student visa?

An eligible HEP may use evidence it accepts to assess English for degree-level study and record its assessment on the CAS. If the visa route specifically relies on a SELT, the exact UKVI-approved test is required.

Can an overall test score compensate for a low component?

No. When the four components are assessed together, the required minimum must be met in each relevant component under the approved test rules.

How long can I use a SELT result?

The current GOV.UK guidance says an approved result normally must have been awarded within two years before the application date. Check the exact provider record and current rule before applying.
