Define the purpose of an error log

An error log is not a list of wrong answers. It records why performance failed, what will change and whether that change works later.

Include correct guesses, very slow answers and right-to-wrong changes. Their final score hides unstable reasoning that can fail on a new question.

Record the minimum useful context

Capture date, source, measure, topic, question format, timed or untimed condition, result and approximate time. Use a reference instead of copying copyrighted question text.

Enough context lets you find the item and compare patterns without turning logging into a second study session.

Find the first failure

Trace backward from the wrong answer to the earliest invalid decision: misread instruction, missing concept, wrong clue, flawed model, calculation error or rushed entry.

Later mistakes may be consequences. Fixing only the final arithmetic does not help when the original equation was wrong.

Separate knowledge from execution

A knowledge error means the relevant concept, word, rule or format was unavailable or misunderstood. An execution error means you knew it but applied it poorly under the conditions.

Knowledge needs learning and examples. Execution needs a changed routine, timed rehearsal or final check. Labeling both as careless gives no remedy.

Classify Verbal errors

Useful categories include passage structure, unsupported inference, outside knowledge, missed contrast, inaccurate blank prediction, unknown vocabulary, false synonym pair and incomplete multiple selection.

Write the first incorrect line or decision. Then state a reasonableness check that could have exposed it during the test.

Log instruction fulfilment, thesis precision, reason development, example relevance, qualification, paragraph coherence, time checkpoints and repeated language errors.

Use the official scoring guide and rater commentary. Avoid reducing an essay to grammar counts when argument development is the larger weakness.

Mark timing errors precisely

Distinguish slow reading, unclear strategy, repeated calculation, overchecking, calculator overhead, navigation, perfectionism and recovery failure.

Record where time was lost and what decision should happen earlier next time. “Be faster” is not an actionable correction.

Track answer changes

Note whether a change went wrong-to-right, right-to-wrong or wrong-to-wrong and what new evidence caused it. Productive changes follow a missed clue or corrected computation.

If anxiety drives right-to-wrong changes, adopt a rule to revise only when you can name the specific evidence that invalidates the first answer.

Write a one-sentence correction

A correction should be short enough to recall: “For percent change, divide by the original,” or “For all-that-apply, test every option independently.”

When the gap is conceptual, link the sentence to a focused lesson and a small set of examples. The log should point to practice, not replace it.

Re-solve after a delay

Close the explanation and return later without viewing the answer. Reconstruct the method from the prompt and your correction.

Immediate re-solving often measures short-term memory. A delayed attempt is stronger evidence that the rule is available.

Require transfer

After correcting the original item, solve a related question with changed numbers, wording or response format. Transfer shows that you learned a principle rather than a result.

For writing, apply the same correction to a new prompt or rewrite only the weak paragraph under a short time limit.

Use spaced retesting

Schedule missed concepts sooner and stable corrections farther apart. Record each retest date, result, time and confidence.

A pattern is resolved only after success on more than one later context. One familiar re-solve is insufficient.

Prioritise by frequency and impact

Count recurring causes weekly. A common response-format error may deserve more attention than one rare advanced concept.

Also consider deadline and score impact. Fix broad process failures first, then high-frequency topic gaps and finally isolated mistakes.

Use confidence carefully

Record confidence before viewing the answer. High-confidence errors reveal misconceptions; low-confidence correct answers reveal fragile knowledge.

Calibration improves when confidence and accuracy align. Review both extremes rather than only wrong items.

Keep the categories stable

Use a small consistent category list long enough to reveal trends. Add a category only when existing labels repeatedly hide a meaningful pattern.

Overly detailed labels fragment the evidence. A notes field can preserve nuance without destroying comparability.

Design a practical log layout

Use one row per reviewed item with columns for date, source reference, measure, topic, format, timed condition, result, confidence, time, first cause, correction, next action and retest dates. Keep long reasoning in a linked note only when necessary.

Use consistent category wording so weekly counts remain reliable. Add filters for unresolved high-priority items and upcoming retests. The layout should make the next action visible without reading every explanation.

Write a complete sample entry

A useful entry might say: Quant, percent change, Numeric Entry, wrong and high confidence; first cause: divided by the new value; correction: percent change uses the original denominator; next action: five mixed base-identification questions; retest in two days.

That entry is stronger than “careless percent error” because it names the decision, replacement rule and evidence needed. Follow the retest with a changed context, such as population growth rather than price.

Review with a tutor or study partner

Bring a pattern summary rather than an unfiltered list of every miss. Ask whether the first-cause diagnosis is accurate, whether the correction is general and which practice would prove transfer.

Keep ownership of the final log. A tutor can identify blind spots, but you should be able to state the corrected reasoning independently before marking the item resolved.

Build a weekly dashboard

Summarise total reviewed items, top causes, retest success, slow formats and essay weaknesses. Choose two or three actions for the next week.

Do not treat number of logged errors as failure. A well-reviewed mistake is more valuable than an unexamined correct guess.

Protect source integrity

Use official ETS material first for format and current-test diagnosis. Store references and your own analysis rather than redistributing full proprietary questions.

For third-party material, separate a poor question from your own error. Ambiguous unofficial items should not rewrite an official rule.

Connect the log to timed practice

After concept repair, test the correction in a mixed timed set. A method that works only untimed is not yet test-ready.

Compare error frequency and time before and after the intervention. Improvement should be visible in evidence.

Measure intervention effectiveness

Before a study action, record a small baseline such as accuracy, median time and confidence for the target format. Repeat a comparable set after learning and again after a delay.
