Understand what the SAT measures
The SAT is a college-admission assessment used by many institutions, but every university sets its own testing policy. A score can be one part of an application alongside grades, curriculum, essays, activities, recommendations and English-language evidence. Nepali students should check each intended university rather than assuming that every institution requires or ignores the SAT.
The current SAT measures Reading and Writing and Math in a digital, timed environment. It rewards careful reasoning, command of evidence, language conventions, algebraic thinking, problem solving and the ability to apply familiar concepts under time pressure.
Know the complete digital structure
College Board lists two sections. Reading and Writing lasts 64 minutes and contains 54 questions. Math lasts 70 minutes and contains 44 questions. Together, that is 134 minutes and 98 questions, with a 10-minute break between sections.
Each section contains two equal-length modules. Reading and Writing has two 32-minute modules, while Math has two 35-minute modules. You can review questions within the current module, but after moving to the next module you cannot return to the earlier one.
Understand multistage adaptive testing
The first module in each section contains a broad mix of difficulty. Performance in that module helps determine whether the second module is more or less difficult. This happens separately for Reading and Writing and Math, so a student’s route in one section does not determine the route in the other.
Do not try to guess which route Bluebook assigned. Both routes include scorable work, and careless decisions in either module reduce the evidence available for your score. Use a steady process: answer supported questions, mark uncertain items, review them if time remains and finish every module.
Study Reading and Writing accurately
Reading and Writing questions use short passages or passage pairs followed by one question. The work covers information and ideas, craft and structure, expression of ideas, and standard English conventions. Students may analyse evidence, infer a supported conclusion, interpret words in context, improve transitions or correct grammar and punctuation.
Because the passages are short, efficient reading means identifying the task before becoming absorbed in every detail. Read the question, find the relevant evidence and compare every option with the passage. For grammar items, identify the sentence boundary or tested convention rather than relying only on what sounds natural.
Study the four Math areas
Official Math content covers Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry. Algebra and Advanced Math make up the largest share, while the other two areas still matter and can separate prepared students from those who practise only equations.
Math includes multiple-choice and student-produced response questions. Approximately 30 percent of Math questions are set in context, so students must translate information from a real-world or academic situation before calculating.
Use calculators with judgment
A calculator is available in Bluebook for Math, and students may bring an approved calculator under College Board policy. Calculator access does not remove the need to recognise structure, estimate, simplify expressions or check whether an answer is reasonable.
Practise with the same tool you plan to use. Learn when mental arithmetic or algebra is faster, when the embedded graphing tool reveals an intersection, and when entering a long expression creates more error risk than solving symbolically.
Prepare for Bluebook early
SAT Weekend testing requires Bluebook on an approved device. College Board currently supports suitable Windows laptops or tablets, Mac laptops, iPads and school-managed Chromebooks; personal Chromebooks and mobile phones are not approved. Check the current technical requirements for the exact operating system and device you will bring.
Download Bluebook well before test day. Use it for the test preview and full-length official practice so the timer, navigation, annotation, answer-elimination, reference sheet and calculator tools feel routine.
Complete exam setup on time
College Board instructs registered students to complete exam setup in Bluebook 1–5 days before the test. This downloads the test and generates the admission ticket. A printed admission ticket is preferred, although students can also keep access as instructed by College Board.
On test morning, reopen Bluebook, check messages and centre updates, and ensure the device is fully charged. Bring a charging cable or portable charger because access to a power outlet is not guaranteed.
Use official practice resources
Start with the official SAT practice and preparation resources. Take an initial full-length practice test under realistic conditions. Record both the score and the reasons for missed questions. A useful diagnosis separates content gaps, misreading, inefficient method, careless execution and timing decisions.
Build a realistic preparation timeline
A student with a distant test date can spend several weeks rebuilding foundations before increasing timed work. A student testing soon should prioritise the highest-frequency weaknesses and realistic module practice. In both cases, use a weekly cycle of learn, practise, review and retest.
Choose a target based on actual university requirements and current practice results. A target should guide study priorities, not become a source of random daily changes. Reassess after several weeks of consistent official practice.
Plan Reading and Writing practice
Group errors by domain and question type. For evidence questions, state what the passage proves before reading choices. For words in context, replace the word with a plain meaning that fits the sentence. For rhetorical synthesis, follow the stated goal. For conventions, name the grammar or punctuation rule.
Short daily sets can build precision, but include complete timed modules so pacing becomes automatic. Review correct guesses as carefully as wrong answers because an unsupported guess can hide a weak method.
Plan Math practice
Create a skill inventory covering linear equations, systems, inequalities, nonlinear functions, equivalent expressions, ratios, percentages, statistics, geometry and trigonometry. Relearn weak concepts, solve targeted official questions and then mix them so you must identify the method without a chapter label.
For each error, write the setup that should have been used and the earliest point where your work went wrong. Re-solve without looking at the answer, then solve a related problem later to verify that the correction transferred.
Manage time by module
Use an average pace only as a checkpoint. Some questions take less time and create room for harder ones. If a question blocks progress, make the best supported choice, mark it for review and move on. Returning with several minutes left is better than sacrificing multiple reachable questions.
Bluebook times each module separately. Finish an initial pass early enough to inspect flagged items and obvious input errors. Once module time expires, there is no opportunity to recover an unanswered question from that module.
Avoid common preparation mistakes
Do not rely only on unofficial shortcuts, repeat full tests without reviewing them or study every topic equally when evidence shows a concentrated weakness. Avoid changing resources so often that no error log or study sequence is completed.
Another mistake is practising only on paper. Paper can support learning, but the final stage should use Bluebook and a compliant device so digital reading, calculator use, navigation and module timing are familiar.
Prepare your test-day checklist
Bring the fully charged approved device with Bluebook and exam setup completed, the current admission ticket, acceptable physical photo ID, pens or pencils for scratch work, and your College Board username and password. An approved calculator is optional because Bluebook includes one, but bring your familiar compliant calculator if it supports your plan.
For testing in Nepal, College Board’s country-specific ID rule currently accepts a valid passport bearing the student’s name, photograph and signature, or a U.S. Department of Defense Common Access Card. Most Nepali students should therefore plan around a valid physical passport whose legal name matches the registration.
Check official policies before acting
Use the official SAT structure, device readiness, what to bring and ID requirements pages. Check them again near test day because operational rules can change.
