Know when the sheet is available
Bluebook provides a reference sheet throughout the Math section. Students can open it in either module along with the calculator and Math directions.
Practise opening and viewing it before test day. Current Bluebook improvements make reference sheets easier to view, but interface familiarity still saves time.
Understand what it is for
The sheet supplies selected formulas and geometry facts so the SAT can focus on applying relationships rather than recalling every displayed formula.
It does not select the right formula, identify variables or interpret units. Students must recognise the problem structure and substitute correctly.
Use circle area and circumference
The reference provides circle area as pi times radius squared and circumference as two times pi times radius. Distinguish radius from diameter before substituting.
Keep pi exact when the answer choices use pi. Convert to a decimal only when the requested form or comparison requires it.
Use rectangle and triangle area
The sheet includes rectangle area as length times width and triangle area as one half base times height. Height must be perpendicular to the chosen base.
For composite figures, split the region into known shapes, track overlap and confirm every measurement uses the same unit.
Use the Pythagorean theorem
The reference lists the relationship between the legs and hypotenuse of a right triangle. Identify the side opposite the right angle before assigning the hypotenuse.
The theorem does not apply to every triangle. Check for a right angle or sufficient information before using it.
Use special right triangles
The sheet displays common side relationships for 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 triangles. Match the given side to its correct position before scaling the pattern.
Draw a clean labelled triangle on scratch paper. A memorised ratio in the wrong order produces a plausible but incorrect option.
Use rectangular-prism volume
Volume of a rectangular prism is length times width times height. All three dimensions must use compatible units.
When a question gives surface area, diagonal or a missing edge, solve that relationship first and then apply the volume formula.
Use cylinder volume
Cylinder volume is pi times radius squared times height, equivalent to base area times height. Distinguish the circular base radius from height.
For a hollow or combined solid, subtract or add the appropriate component volumes and state the remaining unit as cubic.
Use sphere volume
The reference includes sphere volume as four thirds pi times radius cubed. Confirm whether the provided measurement is radius or diameter.
Scaling the radius by a factor changes volume by the cube of that factor. Estimation can catch a missed cube.
Use cone and pyramid volume
Cone and pyramid volume formulas include a factor of one third times base area times perpendicular height. The base area depends on the base shape.
Do not substitute slant height for perpendicular height. Sketch the dimension from the base plane to the apex when wording is complex.
Use circle angle facts
The sheet states that a circle contains 360 degrees and 2 pi radians. These facts support degree-radian conversion and arc relationships.
Preserve the requested unit. A numerical angle without degrees or radians can be misinterpreted during calculation.
Use the triangle angle sum
The measures of a triangle’s interior angles sum to 180 degrees. Combine this with parallel-line, exterior-angle or similarity information when required.
Do not assume an unmarked angle is right or that a diagram alone establishes equality. Use stated and derived relationships.
Know what is not supplied
The reference sheet is not a complete collection of linear, quadratic, exponential, percentage, probability, statistics and function relationships.
Students need conceptual fluency with those domains. Build a personal review list from official skill specifications instead of expecting Bluebook to display every rule.
Translate variables into context
A formula uses general symbols, while a question may describe side, rate, capacity or scale with different letters. Map each quantity before substitution.
Write units beside values. Squared and cubic units help confirm whether the chosen relationship produces area or volume.
Rearrange formulas correctly
Some questions provide the formula but ask for a different variable. Isolate the target using inverse operations while preserving factors and exponents.
Substitute after rearranging when possible. This reduces arithmetic clutter and exposes the requested structure.
Use the sheet without wasting time
Memorise where common groups appear and which formulas are included, not merely the symbols themselves. Open the sheet when confirmation saves more time than recall.
For a familiar relationship, direct work may be faster. For a rare solid or special triangle, a quick check can prevent an avoidable error.
