USA CPT Guide for Nepali Students

USA CPT Guide for Nepali Students explains when an internship, practicum, cooperative education or other work experience can qualify as Curricular Practical Training, how the designated school official authorises it on Form I-20 and why employer, location, dates and part-time or full-time status must be correct before work begins. A job related to the major is not automatically CPT.

Information checked on 24 July 2026 using current USCIS, ICE and DHS Study in the States guidance. The DSO applies school curriculum and SEVIS rules to each request.

Understand what CPT is

USCIS describes CPT as alternative work-study, cooperative education, internship or practicum offered through arrangements connected with the school. It must be integral to an established curriculum.

A position can be valuable and related to the major but still fail the curriculum test. Ask the academic department and DSO how the experience appears in the program.

Check the one-academic-year rule

F-1 students generally must have been lawfully enrolled full time for one full academic year at an eligible SEVP-certified institution before practical training.

USCIS recognises a graduate-level exception when the program requires immediate CPT participation. The curriculum, not the student’s preference, creates that exception.

Maintain a full course of study

CPT does not usually replace F-1 enrolment requirements. Confirm the course load, internship registration and academic-credit rules for the term.

Do not drop another course or switch to part time without separate prior DSO approval.

Obtain an eligible offer

The DSO normally needs an offer stating employer, worksite, duties, start and end dates and weekly hours. The duties should connect clearly to the curriculum and major.

A vague offer, unpaid trial or open-ended start can delay or prevent authorisation.

Complete department approval

Some schools require a faculty sponsor, internship course, cooperative-education office or departmental confirmation before the DSO reviews CPT.

Academic approval is necessary where required but does not itself authorise employment. The CPT Form I-20 is the immigration authorisation.

Check the updated Form I-20

The employment section should show the employer, location, authorised dates and whether CPT is part time or full time. Review spelling and dates before work.

Keep every CPT Form I-20 permanently because later OPT, visa and employment processes may ask about practical-training history.

Do not start before authorisation

USCIS says the student must obtain the DSO endorsement and may not begin before the CPT start date on Form I-20.

An offer acceptance, background check, orientation or employer system access can include work activity. Ask what can occur before the start date.

Understand part-time CPT

Part-time CPT is generally 20 hours or fewer per week under the practical-training classification. The Form I-20 should identify the authorisation as part time.

Track actual hours and obtain approval before changing to a full-time schedule.

Understand full-time CPT

Full-time CPT is authorised as such by the DSO. It may affect academic scheduling and future practical-training eligibility.

Do not infer full-time permission from a school vacation or employer request. Check the Form I-20.

Protect future OPT eligibility

USCIS states that one year or more of full-time CPT makes the student ineligible for post-completion OPT at the same educational level. Part-time CPT does not trigger that specific bar.

Count cumulative full-time authorisation carefully with the DSO before accepting a long placement.

Use CPT before the program end date

CPT occurs before the program end date on Form I-20 and is part of the active curriculum. Work after completion generally requires another basis such as approved post-completion OPT.

Confirm the final authorised day when graduation timing changes.

Authorise each employer and period

CPT is employer and date specific. A second employer, new worksite, extension or materially changed role can require new DSO approval and an updated Form I-20.

Submit the change before the current authorisation ends or the new work begins.

Check remote and hybrid arrangements

The worksite and supervision should match the authorised information and school policy. Remote work does not remove CPT requirements.

Ask the DSO before changing location or moving to another state.

Do not use unpaid status as a shortcut

An unpaid internship may still be practical training or employment under immigration and labour rules. Compensation is not the only factor.

Have the DSO review the activity before it begins and ensure the arrangement complies with applicable workplace law.

Keep payroll and tax records

For paid CPT, complete lawful payroll, identity and tax steps. Keep the offer, Form I-20, payslips, tax forms and evidence of duties.

A Social Security number supports administration but does not replace CPT authorisation.

Coordinate school transfer or new level

CPT authorisation belongs to the school and current program. A SEVIS transfer or new education level can end the existing authorisation.

Stop by the authorised date and ask the new DSO about any future training.

Check English-language program limits

USCIS states that students in English-language training programs are not eligible for practical training.

A later degree program has its own eligibility timeline and curriculum rules.

Recognise CPT warning signs

  • The job is called CPT only because it relates to the major
  • No internship course or curriculum link exists
  • Work starts before the Form I-20 date
  • The employer or location differs from the authorisation
  • Part-time CPT silently becomes full time
  • Cumulative full-time CPT reaches 12 months without an OPT review
  • An unpaid internship begins without DSO review

CPT authorisation workflow

  1. Check eligibility. Confirm academic-year and program rules.
  2. Verify curriculum. Establish the internship or practicum link.
  3. Obtain the offer. Include duties, site, dates and hours.
  4. Complete school approval. Follow department and DSO steps.
  5. Audit Form I-20. Match every authorised field.
  6. Work within limits. Track dates, location and hours.
  7. Recheck changes. Obtain new approval before variation.

Frequently asked questions

Is every internship related to my major eligible for CPT?

No. CPT must also be integral to the established curriculum and authorised by the DSO.

Does CPT require a USCIS EAD?

No. CPT is authorised by the DSO on Form I-20 rather than through a separate EAD application.

Can I start after submitting the CPT request?

No. Wait until the current Form I-20 authorises the employer and start date.

Does part-time CPT remove OPT eligibility?

Part-time CPT does not trigger the one-year full-time CPT bar, but keep a complete history.

What happens after 12 months of full-time CPT?

The student becomes ineligible for post-completion OPT at the same education level.
