GMAT Scores Guide for Nepali Students explains the current 205-805 Total Score, 60-90 section scales, equal section weighting, scoring factors, unanswered-question penalty, immediate unofficial result, Official Score Report, five-year validity, score sending and the announced GMAT Superscore. Use current scores rather than retired 200-800 assumptions.

Use the current score scale

The current GMAT Total Score ranges from 205 to 805. Total values appear in 10-point intervals and end in 5.

Do not label a current result with the retired GMAT Exam 10th Edition scale of 200-800. The editions have different score distributions and content.

Understand the three section scores

Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning and Data Insights are each reported on a 60-90 scale in one-point intervals.

Read all three section results. A total can hide a relative weakness that matters for a programme, scholarship or retake plan.

Know the equal weighting rule

GMAC states that Quant, Verbal and Data Insights contribute equally to the Total Score. Data Insights is therefore part of the main score, not a side metric.

A balanced preparation plan should not neglect a section because another section feels more familiar.

Understand what affects the score

Official guidance says scoring considers the characteristics, including difficulty, of questions answered correctly and incorrectly, together with the number left unanswered.

The score is not a simple percentage-correct conversion. Two practice sets with the same raw accuracy can represent different evidence.

Answer every question

There is a specific penalty when a section is not completed. The number of unanswered questions affects the result.

Build pacing that reaches every item. When time is nearly finished, leaving questions blank is not a better scoring strategy than making reasoned selections.

Ignore first-question myths

GMAC identifies as a myth the claim that getting the first or second question wrong automatically creates a special heavier penalty.

Treat every question as the current task. Trying to diagnose the adaptive algorithm during the exam wastes time and attention.

Do not confuse time with direct weighting

Taking longer on a question does not by itself reduce the score. The practical danger is using so much time that later questions are rushed or unanswered.

Use the Official Score Report’s time-management evidence to identify where pacing caused a downstream loss.

Use Review and Edit carefully

Changing a correct response to an incorrect one during Review & Edit is not weighted more heavily merely because it was changed. The final response is what matters for scoring.

Edit only when there is a clear reason, such as a found calculation error or a stronger passage-based interpretation.

Understand measurement precision

The official score page lists a standard error of measurement of 30-40 points for Total Score and 3 points for each section score.

Do not treat a small difference as proof of a completely different underlying ability. Review repeated evidence, section pattern and programme context.

Read the immediate unofficial result

Immediately after completing the exam, the screen displays unofficial Quant, Verbal, Data Insights and Total scores for that attempt.

GMAC rules prohibit recording, saving, screenshotting or printing that secure-screen result. Wait for the account notification.

Know when the official report arrives

The Official Score Report is typically available in the mba.com account within 3-5 days. GMAC notes that it can occasionally take up to 20 days.

Work backward from application deadlines and include programme processing time after score sending.

Read the Official Score Report

The report includes appointment information, selected personal data, Total Score, section scores and percentile rankings. Detailed performance insights are included at no additional cost.

Use the report as a diagnosis, not only a headline result.

Review performance by content

The report can show performance by content domain within each section, using recent comparison data. This can separate a narrow topic gap from a wider section problem.

Connect each weak domain to specific official practice and an error-log category.

Review performance by question type

Question-type insights show relative performance across the formats present in a section. Not every subdomain or chart applies to every section.

For Data Insights, separate format familiarity from mathematical or reading difficulty before choosing a remedy.

Review fundamental skills

The score report can provide percentile-based information about fundamental skills assessed within the sections.

Translate the chart into behaviours: identify evidence, form equations, test assumptions, interpret displays or manage multi-source information.

Review time management

Time-management data includes response time by question and review time. It can expose an early slowdown, repeated overinvestment or a rushed finish.

Compare timing with correctness. A fast wrong answer and a slow correct answer require different preparation changes.

Review answer changes

The report summarises Question Review & Edit activity, including time spent and whether changes improved performance.

Use this evidence to refine bookmarking and the threshold for changing an answer on a future attempt.

Understand what schools receive

Schools receive basic registration information, exam date and delivery format, Total Score, section scores and associated percentiles. They do not receive the candidate’s full detailed performance dashboard.

Only programmes to which the candidate sends a score can access that score report, subject to current policies.

Do not send a printed browser page

Printing an account page does not create an Official Score Report and should not be sent to a school as an official result.

Follow the programme’s self-reporting instruction for the application and use mba.com for official delivery when required.

Know the five-year validity period

Current GMAT scores are valid for five years. An older result may remain available for reporting for up to ten years, but results over ten years old are unavailable.

A programme can still impose a stricter recency rule. Verify the exact intake requirement rather than relying only on GMAC availability.

Understand post-exam score control

Candidates do not need to select recipients before taking the current GMAT. You can view the result before deciding where to send it.

Because programmes cannot see an unsent score, GMAC says there is no need to cancel a score simply to hide it.

Send only after recipient verification

Check school, programme, campus and intake before submitting. Once sent, GMAC cannot undo the action or remove the programme’s access.

The official score page says a submitted score is sent to selected programmes within eight hours, but allow the institution’s own matching and processing time.

Distinguish a candidate choice from GMAC cancellation

Choosing not to send a score is different from a score cancelled by GMAC or a test provider for a testing issue or policy violation.

Official reports can use special notations for cancellations. Follow the applicable policy and Customer Care process when a result is withheld or cancelled.

Research a programme-linked target

There is no universal passing or guaranteed-admission GMAT score. Record each target programme’s current requirement, class profile, range, median or average and the year represented.

Label each statistic correctly. A class median is not a minimum, and a minimum does not describe competitive strength.

Compare the current and retired editions correctly

GMAC says direct numerical comparison between 205-805 and 200-800 is not accurate or meaningful. Percentile-based concordance is the appropriate tool when a historical comparison is necessary.

Official guidance describes 645 on the current edition as comparable by percentile context to the old 700 benchmark. Do not subtract a fixed number from every score.

Understand the announced GMAT Superscore

As of 25 July 2026, GMAC described GMAT Superscore as coming in early August 2026. It was not yet an active feature on the review date.

The announced calculation uses the highest eligible section scores across valid attempts of the latest edition and displays an additional data point on the Official Score Report.

Know Superscore eligibility

GMAC’s June 2026 guidance says valid latest-edition attempts from test-center and online delivery are eligible. Expired current scores and GMAT 10th Edition scores are excluded.

Do not assume every school will use the new data point in the same way. Verify each programme’s policy after launch.

Plan a retake from evidence

Compare programme-linked targets with Total Score, section scores, percentiles, content evidence, timing and answer changes. Identify a repair that can realistically move performance.

Current rules require at least 16 days between attempts and permit five online and test-center attempts combined in a rolling 12-month period.

Use the mba.com account for the actual report and recipient history. Third-party calculators cannot replace an official score.

Follow a seven-step score review

Record the attempt; read Total and section scores; note percentiles; review content, skills and timing; compare programme evidence; decide whether to send; then build a targeted retake plan only if useful.
