UK Part-Time Work Rules for Nepali Students explains when Student permission allows 20 hours, 10 hours or no employment during term time, which activities are restricted and how vacations, placements and voluntary work are treated. Your eVisa or immigration permission, course and sponsor determine the actual condition, so check them before accepting any shift.
Information checked on 24 July 2026. Immigration conditions and wage rates can change. Use your current eVisa, university term dates and GOV.UK rules as the final authority.

Can Nepali students work in the UK?
Some students can work, but nationality alone does not create the right. Appendix Student links employment conditions to the course level, sponsor type and study mode. GOV.UK also states that successful applicants are told what they can and cannot do.
A full-time student on a degree-level or higher course can normally work up to 20 hours a week during term time when sponsored by a higher education provider with a track record of compliance. A full-time student below degree level with that type of provider can normally work up to 10 hours. Other study, including part-time study, normally carries no employment permission.
Check the condition displayed on your eVisa and ask the university’s international student team if it conflicts with the expected course rule. Do not begin work while an error or uncertainty remains unresolved.
For the wider admission and visa sequence, use the study in the UK from Nepal guide.
What does the weekly limit mean?
The limit is a maximum across all paid and qualifying voluntary work, not a target promised by the visa. Holding two jobs does not create two separate allowances. If your condition allows 20 hours and one employer schedules 12, only 8 remain for other counted activity during that term-time week.
Keep your own record of dates and hours, including training, meetings and required time that may count as work. Give each employer accurate information about other employment. Employers must conduct right to work checks, but the student is also responsible for complying with immigration conditions.
Term time and vacation dates
Your university defines academic term and vacation dates for the course. Do not rely on a friend’s calendar, a general university page or the dates for another programme. Taught master’s students can be in term time during the summer dissertation period even when undergraduate students are on vacation.
The Student sponsor guidance says students whose condition permits term-time work can work full time during official vacations and during the period after the course ends while valid permission remains, subject to the rules. Confirm the course completion date and any restrictions before increasing hours.
A reading week, study week, examination period or temporary absence is not automatically a vacation. Obtain written term-date guidance from the sponsor when the status is unclear.
Work that is normally prohibited
Appendix Student restricts certain activities even when a student has unused weekly hours. A Student normally cannot:
- Be self-employed or engage in business activity
- Work as a professional sportsperson, including as a sports coach
- Work as an entertainer
- Fill a permanent full-time vacancy while remaining on ordinary Student conditions
There are narrow exceptions for eligible students with valid applications under specified post-study routes, including the Innovator Founder exception described in the rules. Do not assume an exception applies without checking the exact conditions and receiving qualified immigration guidance where necessary.
Self-employment, freelancing and online work
Freelancing, gig work, consulting, invoicing clients, selling services or running a business can amount to self-employment or business activity. The fact that the client is overseas, payment enters a Nepal account or the work is completed online does not automatically make it permitted.
Before accepting freelance, creator, delivery, trading or platform-based work, ask the university’s immigration advisers how the activity is classified. Do not register a business, advertise services or issue invoices while relying on a general 20-hour statement.
Paid work, volunteering and voluntary work
Volunteering and voluntary work are not always the same for immigration purposes. A genuine volunteer may have no contractual obligation and receive only reasonable expenses. A voluntary worker can have defined duties and hours, and that activity can count toward the permitted weekly limit.
Home Office employer guidance states that Students permitted to work may undertake voluntary work, but voluntary work plus paid employment must remain within the term-time maximum. For example, someone with a 20-hour condition who completes 15 paid hours cannot add more than 5 counted voluntary hours that week.
Ask the organisation for a written role description and have the university check it when the status is uncertain. Unpaid work is not automatically outside immigration or minimum-wage rules.
Course work placements
An assessed work placement that is an integral part of the course can be permitted under the placement provisions. The sponsor must approve and monitor it according to the rules. Placement hours are treated separately from ordinary term-time employment when the placement meets the requirements.
Do not convert an unrelated job into a “placement” by description. Confirm that it appears in the course structure, carries the required assessment and has formal university approval before starting.
National Minimum Wage rates in 2026
GOV.UK lists the following minimum hourly rates from 1 April 2026:
- Age 21 and over: £12.71
- Age 18 to 20: £10.85
- Under 18: £8.00
- Eligible apprentice rate: £8.00
The applicable rate depends on age and apprentice status. It is a legal minimum, not a prediction of available jobs or take-home pay. Tax, National Insurance, pension rules and lawful deductions can affect the amount received.
Right to work checks and an eVisa
An employer must verify the right to work before employment begins. A student with an eVisa can use the official online service to share the necessary status information. The employer may also request evidence of official term and vacation dates.
Use only the GOV.UK service and protect the share code and personal information. A genuine employer should explain the hiring process, written terms, pay and required checks. Never pay someone to create a false right to work document or alter a university letter.
National Insurance number, tax and payslips
A National Insurance number helps record tax and National Insurance contributions. Follow GOV.UK instructions if you need to apply. An employer can normally begin a lawful hiring process while the number is being arranged when the right to work has been proven.
Check every payslip for hours, rate, gross pay, deductions and net pay. Keep the employment contract, rota, timesheets, payslips and tax documents. Raise an unexplained deduction promptly through the employer’s payroll process or an appropriate official advice service.
How to find legitimate part-time work
- Use the university careers portal and verified employer events
- Check the employer’s official website and business details
- Read the job title, duties, location, hours and pay before applying
- Ask whether shifts can stay within term-time limits
- Obtain written employment terms and a payroll record
- Protect passport, bank and immigration information
Reject a role that asks for an upfront recruitment payment, bank-account access, money transfers, parcel forwarding or use of your identity. A high salary for vague remote tasks is a warning sign, not a solution to the student budget.
Part-time work is not a tuition plan
The main purpose of Student permission is study. The sponsor guidance says permitted employment is intended to supplement income or form part of an approved placement. Jobs and shifts are not guaranteed, and the weekly restriction limits earning capacity during term.
Build the UK plan without relying on future wages for tuition, visa funds or essential initial costs. The cost of studying in the UK budget guide explains tuition, maintenance, visa, healthcare and arrival expenses.
Balancing work and academic progress
Choose shifts that leave enough time for classes, independent study, assessment and rest. Missing attendance or falling behind can affect academic progression and the sponsor’s reporting duties. Tell the employer your fixed academic commitments before accepting a rota.
During exams or major projects, work less than the immigration maximum when needed. “Up to 20 hours” is a ceiling, not a recommendation for every week.
What happens if a student breaks the rules?
Working outside the permitted hours or type of activity can be illegal work. It can affect employment, immigration status and future applications, and it can create sponsor and employer consequences. Stop and seek qualified advice immediately if you believe a breach may have occurred.
Do not hide hours, use cash-in-hand arrangements or ask an employer to change records. Accurate evidence and timely professional advice are safer than trying to repair the story later.
Before accepting a job
- Check the eVisa condition. Confirm whether work is permitted and the term-time limit.
- Confirm term dates. Use the official calendar for your exact course.
- Classify the role. Rule out prohibited self-employment, business, sport or entertainment activity.
- Add all hours. Include other jobs and counted voluntary work.
- Verify the employer. Check the role, location, pay and payroll process.
- Complete right to work checks. Use official evidence and share-code services.
- Keep records. Retain the contract, rota, hours and payslips.
Students preparing the visa application should first review the UK Student visa requirements and documents guide.
Common work-rule mistakes
- Assuming every Student visa permits 20 hours
- Adding the weekly limit separately for two employers
- Treating a master’s dissertation period as a vacation
- Assuming unpaid work never counts
- Accepting freelance or gig work without checking self-employment rules
- Working full time in a permanent vacancy without meeting an exception
- Relying on a friend’s eVisa condition instead of your own
- Planning tuition around uncertain part-time income
Frequently asked questions
Can a Nepali student work 20 hours in the UK?
Often yes for full-time degree-level study with an eligible higher education sponsor, but the eVisa condition and course determine the actual permission.
Can students work full time during holidays?
Students whose condition allows term-time work can normally work full time in official vacations. Confirm the exact vacation dates for your course, especially during a master’s dissertation.
Can a UK Student visa holder freelance?
Student permission normally prohibits self-employment and business activity. Freelancing can fall within those categories, so do not proceed based only on unused weekly hours.
Does voluntary work count toward 20 hours?
Voluntary work can count toward the term-time maximum. Genuine volunteering may be treated differently, so obtain a role description and check with the university when unsure.
What is the UK minimum wage for students in 2026?
From 1 April 2026 the rate is £12.71 for age 21+, £10.85 for age 18 to 20 and £8.00 for under 18 or an eligible apprentice. Age and status determine the applicable rate.
