USA Accreditation Guide for Nepali Students

USA Accreditation Guide for Nepali Students explains how U.S. institutional and programmatic accreditation work, how to use the Department of Education database, why SEVP certification is a separate check and how accreditation can affect transfer credit, professional licensing, employment and further study. A school logo, state licence or Form I-20 does not by itself prove recognised academic accreditation.

Information checked on 24 July 2026 using current U.S. Department of Education, EducationUSA and DHS guidance. Accreditation status can change, so confirm it with the accrediting agency before enrolment.

Understand the U.S. accreditation system

EducationUSA explains that the United States does not have one central ministry controlling every postsecondary institution. Colleges can vary widely, and accreditation developed as a nongovernmental peer-review process.

Private accrediting organisations evaluate institutions or programs against published standards. The U.S. Department of Education does not itself accredit colleges.

Know the Department of Education’s role

The Department reviews and recognises accrediting agencies as reliable authorities for federal purposes. It holds recognised agencies accountable to federal recognition criteria.

Recognition of an accreditor is not the same as a government endorsement of every institution. Students still need to check the exact record and intended outcome.

Use DAPIP as a primary check

The Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs contains information reported to the Department by recognised accrediting agencies and state approval agencies.

Search the institution’s legal name and location. Record the accreditor, status, dates and whether the entry covers the institution or a specific program.

Confirm current status with the accreditor

DAPIP states that reported information is not audited and may not always be current or complete. For the most accurate current information, contact or search the appropriate accrediting agency.

Match the campus, program and date. Save the source and date checked before paying a deposit.

Distinguish institutional accreditation

Institutional accreditation reviews the college or university broadly. It can be important for recognition, transfer, further study and federal-program participation.

It does not guarantee that every specialist program meets a profession’s separate accreditation or licensing requirements.

Distinguish programmatic accreditation

Programmatic accreditation applies to a specific field or professional program. It can matter where graduates seek regulated practice, certification or licensure.

Check the exact degree, campus, delivery mode, cohort and accreditation period on the professional body’s current list.

Separate accreditation from SEVP certification

EducationUSA warns that an SEVP-certified school able to issue Forms I-20 may not hold recognised academic accreditation. SEVP certification concerns F/M international-student enrolment and immigration records.

Verify both the exact campus in the DHS School Search and accreditation through DAPIP and the accreditor.

Separate accreditation from state approval

A school may be authorised, licensed or approved to operate under state rules. That status is not automatically institutional or programmatic accreditation.

Ask the school to name the accrediting agency and independently verify that agency’s recognition and the school’s current status.

Check effects on transfer credit

Accreditation helps institutions assess whether prior credits are acceptable, but the receiving institution always decides transfer. Accreditation does not guarantee that a course applies to the new major.

Ask the destination university for a written evaluation or articulation plan before relying on transfer.

Check effects on further study

Graduate and professional schools may require a degree from an institution accredited by a recognised agency. Some also require programmatic accreditation.

Read future-entry requirements now if the bachelor’s or masters is part of a longer academic plan.

Check professional licensing rules

Licensing boards can require a program with specific professional accreditation, supervised practice, exams or background checks. Institutional accreditation alone may not be enough.

Verify rules in the intended state directly with the licensing authority. An adviser cannot guarantee future eligibility.

Check employer and home-country recognition

Employers and foreign qualification authorities may consider the institution, accreditor, program and study mode. Recognition can differ by country and occupation.

For Nepal use the relevant official recognition authority before enrolment, especially for regulated professions and further public-sector study.

Recognise diploma-mill warning signs

The Department of Education warns that not every institution is what it appears to be. Diploma mills may focus on collecting money rather than delivering rigorous education.

Warning signs include degrees for life experience with little assessment, extremely short completion, guaranteed awards, no verifiable faculty and accreditation from an unknown body.

Verify the accreditor itself

Any organisation can claim to accredit schools. Search whether the agency is recognised by the U.S. Secretary of Education for the relevant scope.

An unrecognised accreditor’s claim should not be presented as equivalent to recognised accreditation.

Read sanctions and status details

Accreditation records can include candidacy, warning, probation, show-cause or withdrawal information. The meaning and student impact depend on the agency.

Ask the accreditor and institution for current written information, teach-out protection and dates when status is uncertain.

Keep evidence before enrolment

Save the DAPIP result, accreditor listing, SEVP campus result, programmatic record and provider response with the date checked.

Recheck before transfer, professional registration or further study because status and scope can change.

Accreditation warning signs

  • The school gives only a state licence as proof
  • The named accreditor is absent from recognised-agency lists
  • SEVP certification is marketed as academic accreditation
  • A different campus or program holds the claimed status
  • The course promises a degree in an unrealistic time
  • Professional licensing is guaranteed without naming the board
  • Written accreditation details are refused

Accreditation verification workflow

  1. Identify the legal institution. Match name, campus and program.
  2. Search DAPIP. Record the reported accreditor and status.
  3. Check the agency. Confirm current status and scope.
  4. Check the program. Verify professional accreditation if needed.
  5. Check SEVP separately. Confirm Form I-20 authority.
  6. Test the outcome. Ask transfer, licensing or recognition bodies.
  7. Keep evidence. Save dated records and recheck later.
