USA F1 Travel and Reentry Guide for Nepali Students

USA F1 Travel and Reentry Guide for Nepali Students explains how to prepare a passport, F-1 visa, travel-endorsed Form I-20, active SEVIS record, funding evidence and any OPT documents before leaving the United States and asking to re-enter. A visa permits travel to a port of entry, but Customs and Border Protection makes the admission decision.

Information checked on 24 July 2026 using current ICE, Department of State and CBP guidance. Entry rules, visa procedures and individual circumstances change, so consult the DSO and official government pages before booking.

Ask the DSO before booking

The Designated School Official can check the SEVIS record, program dates, employment annotations and travel endorsement. Ask early enough to correct mistakes and obtain a new Form I-20 if required.

Share the destination, dates, visa status, academic situation and any pending immigration application. Advice for an active student can differ from advice during OPT or a status problem.

Check the SEVIS record is active

A current-looking document does not cure a terminated or inaccurate SEVIS record. Confirm status with the DSO before departure, especially after reduced course load, withdrawal, transfer, employment or a long absence.

Travel on a terminated record can lead to refusal or detailed secondary inspection. Do not rely on an informal assurance when the official record needs correction.

Review passport validity

ICE guidance generally describes a passport valid for at least six months after the reentry date, unless the traveller’s nationality is covered by a passport-validity agreement that permits a shorter period.

Renew early if the passport is damaged, nearly full or close to expiration. Carry the old passport too if it contains the valid F-1 visa.

Separate visa validity from student status

The visa is an entry document. An F-1 student may usually remain inside the United States after the visa expires if the student continues to maintain lawful status and the authorised duration of stay.

Once the student leaves, a valid visa is normally needed to request F-1 reentry unless a specific exception such as automatic visa revalidation applies. The visa expiration date does not extend or shorten the program by itself.

Use a visa in an expired passport correctly

The Department of State explains that a valid visa in an expired passport may be presented with a new valid passport, provided the visa is not damaged and the biographical details remain consistent.

Do not remove or transfer the visa foil. Carry both passports and check the official guidance for any name or nationality change.

Confirm the Form I-20 travel endorsement

Carry the current Form I-20 with the required DSO travel signature. Check the program, school, SEVIS ID, personal details and employment notation before leaving.

Travel-signature validity can depend on whether the student is enrolled or on OPT. Ask the DSO for the date that applies to the student’s exact situation rather than using an old general checklist.

Carry evidence of continuing study

Bring a recent enrolment verification, class schedule or transcript when available. These records help show that the trip is temporary and the student will continue the academic program.

Keep the school contact and DSO emergency information accessible during travel, not only in checked baggage or an account that may require a blocked phone number.

Prepare funding evidence

ICE lists financial information showing funds for tuition and living expenses among the basic reentry materials. Carry current, credible evidence appropriate to the Form I-20 and study plan.

Large unexplained deposits or contradictory sponsor information can create questions. Use truthful documents and be ready to describe the funding source briefly.

Plan a visa renewal outside the United States

An F-1 visa cannot be renewed from inside the United States. If renewal is needed, review the embassy or consulate procedure, appointment availability, screening requirements and document list before departure.

The Department of State generally recommends applying in the home country. A third-country application may be possible, but the student cannot return until the visa is issued and a denial can prevent return as a student.

Understand that visa processing can take longer

An interview or estimated wait time is not an approval date. Administrative processing, document requests and passport return can extend the trip.

Leave academic and employment plans flexible, inform the school, and do not buy an inflexible ticket based on a promised outcome from an unofficial agent.

Treat automatic visa revalidation as a narrow rule

Automatic visa revalidation can permit certain F-1 travellers with an expired visa to return after travel of 30 days or less to Canada, Mexico or an eligible adjacent island when every condition is met.

It is not a visa renewal. It does not apply in several situations, including when the traveller applies for a new visa during the trip, stays beyond the time limit or travels outside the permitted area. Confirm eligibility with the DSO and current State and CBP guidance.

Review the five-month absence issue

ICE’s general continuing-student reentry guidance addresses travel outside the United States for five months or fewer. A longer absence can require a new initial Form I-20, a new SEVIS record and another I-901 fee unless an applicable authorised study arrangement changes the analysis.

Discuss a long absence with the DSO before leaving because it can also affect practical-training eligibility accumulated through study.

Travel while post-completion OPT is pending

ICE says reentry may be possible while an OPT request is pending, but travel should be undertaken with caution. USCIS may issue a request for evidence or approve the case while the student is away.

If approval occurs, the student may be expected to have the EAD for reentry. Ensure a reliable United States mailing arrangement and obtain case-specific DSO advice before departure.

Travel after OPT approval

A student returning during approved OPT should carry the EAD, OPT-endorsed Form I-20, valid passport and visa, plus an employment letter when available.

Keep employment reporting current and monitor unemployment days. Exceeding the unemployment limit while abroad can affect eligibility to re-enter in F-1 status.

Do not use the grace period for reentry

ICE states that an F-1 student cannot re-enter during the 60-day period after finishing the program or OPT. The grace period is for preparing to depart or taking another permitted status action inside the United States.

Do not leave during the grace period expecting the unused days to function like travel authorisation.

Check destination and transit visas

United States documents do not replace the entry or transit permission required by another country. Review official immigration and airline rules for every destination and connecting airport.

A transit visa problem can stop the journey before the student reaches a United States port of entry.

Prepare for inspection at the port of entry

Present documents clearly and answer the officer’s questions truthfully and briefly. CBP decides admission based on the documents and circumstances at that time.

Keep the school address, DSO contact, United States residence and study or employment details available. Secondary inspection is an additional review and is not automatically a refusal.

Review the electronic I-94 after arrival

After admission, retrieve the electronic Form I-94 from the official CBP website and check the name, passport details, class of admission and authorised-stay notation.

Send a copy to the DSO if the school requests it. Seek correction promptly if the record does not show the expected F-1 admission.

Prepare separate documents for F-2 dependants

Each F-2 dependant should carry an individual current Form I-20, passport and required visa. The primary F-1 student’s status and documents may also be relevant when dependants travel separately.

Ask the DSO to review the family plan, especially when the F-1 student has pending or approved OPT.

Know what to do if documents are lost

Keep secure digital copies of the passport identity page, visa, Form I-20, EAD and school contacts. Copies do not replace originals, but they can support reporting and replacement.

Report a lost passport to the appropriate local authority and Nepal’s diplomatic mission, then follow United States consular instructions for any lost visa. Inform the DSO immediately.

F1 travel warning signs

  • The SEVIS record has not been checked before departure
  • The Form I-20 travel endorsement is expired or missing
  • The visa expires before the planned return and no renewal plan exists
  • A third-country visa application is treated as guaranteed
  • OPT travel is planned without EAD or employment evidence
  • The student expects to re-enter during the grace period
  • Transit-country permission and the new I-94 are ignored

F1 travel preparation workflow

  1. Ask the DSO. Review status, dates, travel endorsement and pending actions.
  2. Check documents. Verify passport, visa, Form I-20 and funding evidence.
  3. Plan renewal. Allow for consular delay if a new visa is required.
  4. Check the route. Confirm destination and transit permission.
  5. Add OPT records. Carry the EAD and employment evidence when applicable.
  6. Prepare for inspection. Keep accurate school and United States details accessible.
  7. Verify arrival. Review the electronic I-94 and report any error.

Frequently asked questions

Can I remain in the USA after my F-1 visa expires?

Usually yes if you remain in the United States and continue to maintain lawful F-1 status. The visa is primarily an entry document.

Can an F-1 visa be renewed inside the USA?

No. Visa renewal is handled through a United States embassy or consulate outside the country.

What document needs the DSO travel signature?

The current Form I-20 needs the appropriate DSO travel endorsement for reentry.

Can I re-enter while OPT is pending?

ICE says it may be possible, but travel should be approached cautiously because approval, an evidence request or EAD delivery can occur while the student is away.

Can I re-enter during the 60-day grace period?

No. ICE says that period is for preparing to leave, not for F-1 reentry after travel.
