Start thirty days early
College Board tells students to begin device preparation at least 30 days before test day. This allows time to discover an unsupported operating system, insufficient storage or school-management restriction.
The same deadline matters for a loan request. Waiting until test week can leave no reliable path to an approved device.
Choose an approved device family
Bluebook can run on supported Windows devices, Macs, iPads and school-managed Chromebooks. A personal Chromebook and a mobile phone cannot be used.
Confirm the exact device type before installing. A computer that can browse the web is not automatically approved for secure Bluebook testing.
Check current Windows requirements
For the 2026-27 requirements checked on this page, Bluebook lists Windows 11 24H2 as the minimum and Windows 11 26H2 as the recommended maximum. Windows S mode and Windows 11 SE are not supported.
The device needs at least 1 GB of available storage. Recheck the official page because supported versions can change as operating systems are updated.
Check current Mac requirements
The current Bluebook page lists macOS 15 as the minimum and macOS 26.5.2 as the recommended maximum, with at least 1 GB of available storage.
College Board warns against a major Apple operating-system upgrade immediately before testing. Keep the verified working configuration until after the SAT.
Check current iPad requirements
The current requirements list iPadOS 26 as the minimum and iPadOS 26.4 as the recommended maximum, with at least 250 MB of free space on the device.
External keyboards are permitted for SAT and PSAT testing on iPads, and external mice are permitted. Verify the complete official specification for the exact device.
Check Chromebook management
Bluebook works only on a school-managed Chromebook, not a personal Chromebook. Current rules require ChromeOS 144 or higher and verified mode enabled.
A student usually cannot change management settings alone. Work with the school technology team early, especially when borrowing a school device for SAT Weekend.
Check screen and environment rules
Bluebook requirements specify minimum screen sizes and prohibit virtual or remote testing environments. The device must operate independently instead of through a virtual machine or thin client.
Use the exact device planned for test day during practice. A different screen, keyboard or school security policy can create unexpected usability problems.
Free required storage
Confirm enough free space for Bluebook and downloaded test content. Current requirements generally list 1 GB for Windows, Mac and Chromebook, and 250 MB for iPad.
Do not wait for a test-day error to remove files. Maintain additional free space where practical and restart after updates or cleanup.
Test battery endurance
The device must hold a charge for the testing period, and official student guidance recommends 3-4 hours of battery capacity. Bring a power cord or portable charger, but an outlet is not guaranteed.
Run a full Bluebook practice session on battery to identify rapid drain. Charge fully the night before and again on test morning if needed.
Confirm Wi-Fi capability
The device must connect to the Wi-Fi network used by the test centre. Internet is needed to start and submit the test, while Bluebook is designed to continue through a temporary connection drop.
Do not plan to use a personal hotspot unless testing staff specifically handle an exceptional technical issue. Follow the centre’s network instructions.
Install Bluebook correctly
Download Bluebook from the official College Board source and sign in with the correct College Board account. School-managed devices may require installation by authorised staff.
Open the application well before test week, run available checks and use the test preview. Installation alone does not prove the complete testing workflow works.
Complete exam setup
For SAT Weekend, complete exam setup in Bluebook 1-5 days before the test. This downloads the test and generates the admission ticket.
Use the same account as registration and confirm the displayed test information. Keep access to the account credentials for test day.
Use the test preview
The Bluebook preview helps students practise navigation, timer, annotation, mark-for-review, calculator, reference sheet and response entry.
Try the interface on the actual testing device. Familiarity reduces avoidable delay and reveals accessibility or input issues early.
Close unsupported applications
Current SAT testing rules require other applications to be closed before testing. Students may not open another program or paste work into Bluebook during the test.
Restarting the device before leaving home can clear pending processes. Follow the proctor’s final instructions in the testing room.
Know external accessory rules
External mice are permitted. External keyboards are permitted with tablets for SAT use but are not permitted with laptops; always verify the current requirements for the exact device.
Phones, smartwatches, wireless earbuds and other prohibited electronics are separate from the approved testing device and must follow test-centre rules.
Request a loan if needed
Students without access to an approved device may request one from College Board after registration and at least 30 days before test day. Approval and availability are not guaranteed.
If approved, arrive 30 minutes before standard check-in to receive the device, sign in, complete exam setup and obtain the admission ticket.
Prepare a backup plan
If possible, identify a second approved device and confirm access before the deadline. College Board guidance allows students to bring a backup testing device.
Keep registration details, account credentials, charging equipment and contact information organised. A backup is useful only when it is approved and prepared.
Run the final morning check
Close and reopen Bluebook, review last-minute messages and test-centre information, confirm the admission ticket and fully charge the device.
Pack the approved device, power cord or portable charger, physical photo ID, calculator if desired, and pens or pencils for scratch work.
