Know the two multiple-choice formats
GRE Quantitative Reasoning includes single-answer multiple choice and select-one-or-more multiple choice. The single-answer format asks for one answer from five choices.
The multiple-answer format asks for one or more choices. It may specify an exact number to select or ask for all that apply. ETS notes that an all-that-apply question can have only one correct choice.
Read the response instruction first
Before solving, identify whether the interface expects one choice, a specified number or every valid choice. This changes the stopping rule.
In a single-answer question, one supported option ends the search after verification. In all-that-apply, finding one correct option is not enough; every remaining choice must be considered independently.
Translate the actual target
Underline words such as not, except, least, greatest, approximately, must, could and percent. Distinguish a requested intermediate value from the final quantity.
Write the target with units on scratch paper. Many wrong choices correspond to a correct calculation for the wrong quantity.
Use the fact that the answer is present
ETS advises that if a single-answer result is not among the five choices, first reread the prompt, check computation and reevaluate the method. The options create a built-in diagnostic.
Do not force a nearby choice after an unexplained mismatch. Check units, rounding instructions, percent versus decimal and whether the problem asks for a complement.
Eliminate with explicit reasons
Reject an option because it has the wrong sign, violates a restriction, uses the wrong unit, falls outside a proven bound or fails substitution. Explicit reasons are faster to review than a vague sense that a choice looks wrong.
In single-answer questions, elimination can reduce the work needed for an exact solution. In all-that-apply, elimination must still be performed independently for every option.
Scan answer choices before solving
Option structure can reveal whether estimation, exact calculation, factoring or backsolving is efficient. Widely separated choices permit rougher estimates; close choices require more precision.
Look for sign patterns, common factors, endpoint values and units. Scanning is not guessing; it helps choose a strategy.
Work backward from choices
Substitution can solve equations, inequalities, digit questions and word problems efficiently. For ordered numeric options with a monotonic relationship, begin near the middle and use the result to move higher or lower.
ETS cautions that checking every option can take longer than direct reasoning. Backsolve when it reduces work, not automatically.
Plug in simple numbers
For variable expressions asking what must be equivalent or possible, choose values satisfying every restriction. Avoid only using 0 or 1 when those values erase the structure you need to test.
One counterexample can eliminate an identity claim. To confirm a universal equivalent expression, algebraic simplification is stronger than several matching examples.
Choose a useful representation
Translate relationships into the form that exposes the options: an equation for a fixed unknown, a table for repeated rates, a number line for intervals, a diagram for geometry or a small list for discrete cases. Rewriting the information is worthwhile only when it reduces ambiguity or computation.
Keep the representation labelled with units and restrictions. Before selecting, translate the resulting value back into the wording of the question.
Estimate from option spacing
ETS recommends inspecting how close an approximation must be. Bound roots, round compatible numbers and calculate an order of magnitude before doing exact work.
If choices differ slightly, retain exact fractions or sufficient decimal precision and round only at the final step according to the instruction.
Manage all-that-apply questions
Treat every choice as a separate true-or-false claim. Do not assume the correct options form a familiar pair or that there must be more than one.
When the question specifies an exact number, use that as a final count check, not as permission to choose weak options. When it says all that apply, test the full list.
Find minimum and maximum bounds
ETS notes that conditions may define least or greatest possible values. Once the valid interval is known, several answer choices can be accepted or rejected quickly.
Check whether endpoints are included. Integer restrictions, strict inequalities and discrete step sizes can change the actual minimum or maximum.
Recognise and continue patterns
For sequences, powers, remainders or repeated operations, identify a cycle rather than calculating every term. Verify enough early cases to support the pattern.
Map the requested position carefully using quotient and remainder. An off-by-one error often appears as a nearby distractor.
Diagnose distractor construction
Common distractors reflect a predictable wrong base for percent, an omitted negative root, radius used as diameter, an average of averages, premature rounding or an answer to an intermediate step. After practice, label which error would generate each tempting option.
This is not a shortcut for guessing. It is a verification tool: when your result matches an option but also matches a known error pattern, recheck the corresponding step.
Handle arithmetic and percent options
Estimate sign and range, cancel before multiplying fractions and identify the correct percent base. For successive percent changes, use multipliers rather than adding percentages.
Keep units attached to rates and proportions. An inverted rate often produces a plausible answer choice.
Handle algebra options
Check domain restrictions before cancelling or substituting. For equations, substitute a proposed solution into the original expression, not only a transformed version.
For inequalities and absolute value, test endpoints and signs. A choice may satisfy one branch but not the complete condition.
Handle geometry options
Ordinary GRE geometry figures are not necessarily drawn to scale. Use stated facts and properties, not visual measurement.
Estimate area or length for a reasonableness range, then apply the correct formula and units. Watch radius versus diameter and linear versus squared or cubed scaling.
Handle data options
Read title, units, scale, categories and notes before calculating. Distinguish absolute change from percent change and use the correct denominator.
For combined means, reconstruct sums and counts. For probability, define the sample space and ensure every selected option remains between 0 and 1.
Use the calculator selectively
The basic on-screen calculator is useful for tedious arithmetic, but ETS says most questions do not require difficult computations. Mental reasoning may be faster for simple operations.
Estimate before entering values, avoid unnecessary decimal conversion when a fraction is required and check for key-entry errors.
Answer every question
ETS states that incorrect Quantitative answers do not subtract points. Select the best supported answer even when uncertain.
Do not let one difficult item consume the time available for several others. Mark it, continue and return if time remains.
Use mark and review deliberately
Within a section, the testing software allows you to mark questions, view a list, revisit answered items and change answers while time remains.
Mark questions with a specific unresolved issue: close approximation, unchecked option, ambiguous translation or possible calculator entry. The review screen itself should not consume excessive time.
Keep a multiple-choice error log
Classify misses as response-format error, wrong target, overlooked option, weak bound, premature rounding, invalid backsolving, unit mistake, concept gap or calculation error.
On review, solve once without choices, then compare how each distractor could arise. Understanding distractor logic makes future checks faster.
Design timed practice sets
Build short mixed sets containing select-one and all-that-apply items across arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data. Record both accuracy and the point at which you chose a strategy. A correct answer reached through five unnecessary substitutions still signals an efficiency issue.
Repeat a related set after reviewing errors, then move to a full timed section. Keep the same response-format checks under pressure rather than replacing them with hurried intuition.
