Know the official skill
College Board presents quantitative Command of Evidence with a brief text and a table, line graph or bar graph. Tasks range from identifying data points to analysing patterns and integrating data with passage ideas.
The focus is graphical literacy and reasoning, so stimuli minimise unnecessary information.
Read the claim before calculating
Identify what the assertion says about groups, time, direction or relationship. Translate it into the exact data pattern required.
Calculation without a target can produce accurate but irrelevant numbers.
Read the graphic title
The title defines what the data represent. It may specify a population, measure, experiment or period not repeated in every label.
Use it to prevent applying the values beyond their context.
Read axes and headers
For graphs, identify horizontal and vertical variables. For tables, read row and column headers before locating a cell.
Do not assume the first column is time or the vertical axis begins at zero.
Read units
Check whether values are counts, percentages, rates, currency, years or another measure. Note scale multipliers such as thousands.
A numerically correct comparison can be conceptually wrong when units differ.
Read categories and legend
Match colour, line style or bar group with the correct population or treatment. Trace one series at a time on a crowded graph.
Answer options often swap categories while quoting real values.
Translate the assertion
Write the needed comparison in plain language or symbols: group A exceeds B after treatment, value rises over time, or the difference is largest at one condition.
This prediction makes the relevant cells or points clear.
Locate only relevant values
Find the minimum data needed to test the assertion. Do not copy the whole table or inspect every series when two values answer the question.
Focused reading improves both speed and accuracy.
Estimate before exact work
Use visual scale and rough comparison to predict the answer. Calculate only when options require precision.
Estimation helps catch decimal, percentage and axis-reading errors.
Compare absolute values
When the claim concerns which group is higher or lower, use the values directly with units. Check that they come from the same condition.
Do not substitute percentage change when the assertion asks about final amount.
Compare differences
For a gap or change, subtract in the direction named by the claim. Label beginning and end or group A and group B.
A larger final value does not necessarily mean a larger increase.
Compare percentages
Distinguish percentage from percentage-point difference. For percentage change, divide change by the original value.
Two groups can have the same point increase but different percentage changes.
Interpret line graphs
Track trend, slope direction, turning points and relative positions. Compare the same horizontal-axis value unless the task asks about different times.
Do not extrapolate beyond the displayed range.
Interpret bar graphs
Match each bar with its category and read the axis scale carefully. Grouped bars require both category and series labels.
Visual height can mislead when the axis is truncated.
Interpret tables
Use headers to locate the intersection of the correct row and column. Check notes, totals and whether entries are raw counts or percentages.
Do not compare cells with different denominators as if they were equivalent.
Integrate text and data
The passage may state a hypothesis, method or interpretation. The graphic provides evidence. Use both to determine what the values mean.
Numbers alone may not identify which claim or condition is relevant.
Check data completeness
Notice whether the graphic reports all groups, only selected years or an average that hides variation. Do not infer an unshown category or individual result.
Choose a conclusion the displayed data can support without assuming missing values follow the same pattern.
Support a hypothesis
Predict the data pattern expected if the hypothesis is correct. Choose the option that reports that pattern accurately.
Support does not necessarily prove the hypothesis or mechanism.
Challenge a hypothesis
Identify a value or trend inconsistent with the prediction. Mark the negative task so supporting evidence does not attract you.
A neutral result may be weaker than direct contrary evidence.
Distinguish correlation and causation
A graph showing two variables moving together does not by itself establish that one causes the other.
Choose association language unless the passage describes a design supporting causation.
Reject the wrong-row trap
An option may quote a correct number from another category or condition. Trace every value back to its labels.
Correct arithmetic cannot repair incorrect data selection.
Reject the wrong-direction trap
Choices may reverse increase and decrease, earlier and later, or which group is larger.
Write the required direction before comparing options.
Reject the wrong-unit trap
An answer may treat a percentage as a count or omit a scale multiplier. Keep units beside every recorded value.
Check whether the options use the same unit as the graphic.
Reject the true-but-irrelevant value
A number can be correctly read yet fail to address the claim. Ask whether it demonstrates the required comparison.
Evidence is both accurate and relevant.
Reject unsupported extrapolation
Do not predict values outside the observed period or categories unless the question and model justify it.
A visible trend can change beyond the data.
Manage timing
Read claim, title, labels and relevant values; estimate; then compare choices. Avoid calculating every possible relationship.
If two remain, check category, denominator, unit and direction.
Review a quantitative answer
Re-read the exact row, column or plotted points and state the evidence sentence with units.
Change only when a specific label or calculation shows the first choice was wrong.
