Official scores appear after 8-10 days
ETS says the complete official General Test result becomes available in the candidate account 8-10 days after the test. An email is sent when the report is ready.
At the same time, ETS sends an official Institution Score Report to recipients designated on test day. The receiving university can still need time to process and match it.
Unofficial scores are not the final report
When a candidate chooses to report at the end of the test, the screen shows unofficial Verbal and Quantitative scores. Analytical Writing is not yet available.
Do not enter an estimated writing score or send a screenshot as the official record. Wait for the ETS account report and follow each institution’s application instructions.
The test-taker report is for personal records
The candidate’s official report contains contact information, birth details, intended major, test dates, scores, percentile ranks, authorised recipients and the cumulative reportable history.
ETS says this Test-taker Score Report is intended for the candidate’s information and personal records. A printed or uploaded copy may support an application only if the university explicitly accepts it.
Institutions receive a different official report
The Institution Score Report contains the candidate’s identifying and contact information, intended major, selected GRE test dates and scores, and associated percentiles.
It does not list the other recipients selected, scores the candidate chose not to report or an indication of other GRE attempts. ETS Data Manager recipients can also access the photo and essay response connected with a selected General Test administration.
Research recipients before test day
Create a verified list of institution and department codes from official ETS and university instructions. Check whether the graduate school, specific department or fellowship sponsor should receive the result.
A similarly named institution or wrong campus can receive an irreversible report. Record the code, name, program and deadline together.
Up to four recipients are included
On test day, ETS allows designation of up to four graduate institutions or fellowship sponsors as part of the test fee. These included reports can avoid later per-recipient charges.
The benefit depends on having correct recipient research ready. Do not select an uncertain code simply to use all four places.
Test-day ScoreSelect offers Most Recent
For each included test-day recipient, Most Recent sends scores from the current General Test administration. Use it only after considering the program’s reporting rule.
A program may ask applicants who tested more than once to report all attempts. The institution’s published requirement still applies.
Test-day ScoreSelect also offers All
The All option sends scores from all General Test administrations in the last five years. This can meet a program’s all-scores instruction when the reportable history is complete.
Review the on-screen test type and option before confirming. ScoreSelect does not allow mixing individual section scores from different dates into one administration.
You may choose not to send on test day
ETS permits a candidate to skip recipient designation at that time. This preserves the ability to decide later, but later reports generally require a paid ASR.
Use this option deliberately, not because recipient codes were forgotten. Build the list before the appointment whenever deadlines are known.
Additional Score Reports are ordered later
After test day, use the ETS account to send a result to a new institution or to send when no recipient was selected earlier. This service is called an Additional Score Report.
Do not use an application portal’s “self-report” field as a substitute when the program requires an official ASR from ETS.
The current ASR fee is $40 per recipient
ETS currently lists USD 40 for each Additional Score Report recipient. One university can require more than one recipient route only if its official instructions say so.
Check the live price and final transaction before paying because fees are subject to change. Avoid duplicate orders while a request is processing.
ASR processing takes about five business days
ETS says an online request takes approximately five business days to process. The receiving institution can then require separate delivery and application-matching time.
Order before the deadline buffer. Five business days is not a promise that the university portal will display the score on the fifth day.
An ASR request is final
Once an Additional Score Report request is submitted, ETS says it cannot be cancelled, changed or refunded. Verify the recipient, department and ScoreSelect option before the last confirmation.
Take a secure record of the request, but do not expose payment or account credentials.
After test day, Most Recent remains available
The later Most Recent option sends scores from the most recent General Test administration. If another test occurs before an order, confirm which date is now considered most recent.
Use the exact date and displayed history rather than relying on memory.
After test day, All sends the reportable history
The later All option sends scores from all administrations in the five-year reportable period. This can be appropriate when the program requires all scores.
Read the receiving program rule independently. ETS provides the reporting tool, while the university decides what applicants must disclose.
After test day, Any allows selected administrations
The later Any option lets the candidate select one or as many specific administrations as desired from the last five years. It does not create a section-by-section superscore unless a university independently applies such a policy.
Confirm every selected date before submitting because the ASR cannot be changed or refunded.
ScoreSelect does not hide all testing facts from ETS
ScoreSelect controls which reportable administrations are sent to a recipient. The Institution Score Report does not indicate that other GRE tests were taken or list scores not selected.
Applicants must still answer application questions truthfully and follow any program rule requiring all attempts.
Scores remain reportable for five years
ETS reports a GRE score for five years following its test date and provides an exact-date calculator. Order before the reportable period ends.
When expiry is near, allow the approximately five-business-day ASR processing period. A request made too late may not be sent.
A university can impose a newer-score rule
ETS’s five-year reportable period defines what ETS can send, but a program can state that it wants a more recent result. Read the current application cycle’s instruction.
Do not assume an old report is acceptable merely because it still appears in the ETS account.
Confirm the application identity matches
Use consistent legal names, date of birth, email where requested and applicant identifiers across ETS and the university application. A name change after testing can require help from GRE Services.
ETS says name or address changes related to score sending cannot be processed through the ordinary ASR service. Contact official support.
Match the score to the application
After ETS shows the report sent, check the university portal or contact the admissions office. Provide the application ID, test date and identifying details the institution requests through a secure channel.
Do not send the ETS password or full identity document by ordinary email. The university needs enough information to locate the official report, not control of the account.
Keep proof of the recipient request
The test-taker report lists authorised recipients and scores reported. Also retain the ASR confirmation and payment receipt for deadline follow-up.
A receipt proves a request, while the university portal or admissions confirmation proves matching. Track both stages.
Understand report versus cancel on test day
At the end of the test, ETS asks whether to report or cancel the scores. Cancelling means the candidate will not see the unofficial Verbal and Quantitative results and the appointment still counts under retake policy.
Review cancellation and reinstatement rules before test day. Do not make the decision based only on how difficult the second section felt.
Use score reinstatement only under current rules
ETS lists a separate score reinstatement service and fee for eligible cancelled scores. The request must follow the Bulletin’s deadline and process.
Reinstatement is not guaranteed for every missing or invalid score. Contact official GRE Services when the situation falls outside voluntary cancellation.
Protect the score report PDF
The personal report contains contact, birth, score-history and recipient information. Store it in encrypted or access-controlled storage and avoid posting an unredacted screenshot.
When a counsellor or teacher needs to review it, share the minimum necessary information through a secure method.
