Use the current Quant format

The current Quantitative Reasoning section contains 21 Problem Solving questions in 45 minutes. It measures how candidates apply arithmetic and elementary algebra foundations.

The official description emphasises logic and analytical skill, not advanced mathematics or long textbook calculation.

Remove retired-edition content

Data Sufficiency now appears in Data Insights, not Quantitative Reasoning. The current Quant section is composed of Problem Solving questions.

Do not spend limited preparation time on a retired Quant format simply because an old book labels it GMAT Quant.

Know the no-calculator rule

A calculator is not available or permitted in Quant. Personal calculators, phones, smart watches and calculator applications are prohibited.

Practise estimation, written structure, factorisation and efficient arithmetic without a device.

Understand Problem Solving

A Problem Solving item presents a quantitative task and five answer choices. It can require numerical calculation, algebraic modelling, data interpretation or logical evaluation.

The goal is the most efficient valid path, not the longest familiar school method.

Build arithmetic foundations

Review integers, positive and negative values, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratios, rates, factors, multiples, divisibility, remainders, exponents and roots.

Practise switching representations because a fraction, decimal, percentage or ratio may express the same relationship.

Build algebra foundations

Review expressions, linear equations, inequalities, systems, exponents, roots, formulas and translation from words into variables.

Keep the domain and constraints visible. An algebraically possible value may not satisfy the real problem.

Translate before calculating

Identify the unknown, units, relationships and restrictions before writing equations. Separate given facts from what must be found.

A correct translation often makes the arithmetic short; a rushed translation makes accurate calculation irrelevant.

Use answer choices strategically

Official prep guidance recommends checking choices when an approximation may avoid long computation. Choices can reveal scale, sign or spacing.

Backsolving or testing values is useful when it is faster and logically complete, not as a substitute for understanding.

Estimate with control

Estimate before exact work when choices are far apart. Track whether the operation should increase, decrease or preserve magnitude.

Return to exact calculation when choices are close or the problem asks for a precise remainder, count or boundary.

Use the whiteboard well

Write the target, units, equation and essential intermediate values. A compact layout helps prevent sign, copying and denominator errors.

Test-center candidates receive approved note-taking material; online candidates must use a compliant erasable whiteboard under current rules.

Manage average pacing

Twenty-one questions in 45 minutes gives a little over two minutes per question on average. That is a planning average, not a rigid timer for every item.

Use checkpoints after groups of questions so one difficult problem does not quietly create several unanswered items.

Protect section completion

GMAC applies a penalty when questions are left unanswered. Reach every item within the section limit.

A late reasoned choice is better than discovering several blanks after time expires.

Understand adaptive scoring

Scoring considers characteristics such as difficulty for correct and incorrect responses and the number left unanswered. It is not a simple raw-accuracy percentage.

Do not guess the algorithm or question level during the exam. Solve the current item and protect the full section.

Ignore first-question myths

GMAC identifies as a myth the claim that the first or second question has a special heavier scoring penalty.

Invest appropriate effort without sacrificing later completion.

Use Review and Edit correctly

After answering all questions, the section review screen allows review as time permits and edits to up to three answers.

Bookmark a question for a specific reason such as an unchecked case, sign concern or uncertain interpretation.

Do not over-change answers

Change an answer only when new evidence identifies the original error. General discomfort is not evidence.

Use practice reports to measure whether changes usually help and how much review time they consume.

Classify Quant errors

Tag each miss as concept, translation, logic, calculation, units, answer-choice, timing, reading or review error.

The category determines the repair. More formula study does not fix a repeated misreading pattern.

Create a transfer question

After reviewing a miss, solve a new problem that requires the same decision in a different surface context.

A copied solution proves recognition; a transfer question tests whether the correction can be used independently.

Train mental calculation selectively

Memorise useful fraction-percentage equivalents, basic products, squares and powers that reduce repeated workload.

Do not turn Quant into a speed-arithmetic contest. Reasoning, setup and verification remain central.

Verify with a second method

Check using units, estimation, substitution, reverse operations or answer choices when time permits.

Choose the cheapest reliable check rather than repeating the same calculation in the same way.

Use official practice first

Begin with current official sample questions and the free Official Starter Kit and Practice Exams 1 and 2 in the mba.com account.

Official material confirms format and difficulty more reliably than an unlabelled question bank.

Build practice in phases

Use concept repair, untimed accuracy, timed topic sets, mixed sets and full official simulation. Review between phases.

Do not wait until full mocks to discover that a basic arithmetic or translation skill is unstable.

Measure readiness

Track accuracy, time, confidence, guessed answers, unanswered items and repeated error categories. Look for stability across fresh mixed sets.

One familiar high score is weaker evidence than repeatable performance on unseen official material.

Use the Official Score Report

After an exam, review the 60-90 Quant score, percentile, content, question type, fundamental skill, timing and Review & Edit information.

Build a retake plan from the first failed decisions shown by the report.

Practise inequalities with cases

Multiplying or dividing an inequality by a negative value reverses its direction. Keep sign conditions visible before transforming an expression.

When a variable can be positive, zero or negative, test the relevant cases instead of assuming the familiar one.

Track units and dimensions

Write units beside quantities in rate, work, mixture and conversion problems. Convert units before addition or comparison.

A choice with the wrong dimension can be eliminated even when its numerical value looks plausible.

Separate necessary and sufficient information

Even in Problem Solving, ask what information is necessary to identify the requested value. Ignore decorative facts that do not affect the result.

This reasoning habit reduces calculation and prepares the same analytical skill used in Data Insights.

Build a checkpoint routine

At planned question numbers, compare remaining questions and time without trying to predict the adaptive score. Make small pacing corrections early.

A checkpoint should trigger a decision, such as shortening algebra or moving from exact work to estimation, not panic.

Avoid common Quant mistakes

Do not prepare Data Sufficiency as a Quant format, use a calculator in practice, memorise without transfer, ignore units, leave questions unanswered or change answers without evidence.

Also avoid using retired practice as the only readiness measure.
