Understand multistage adaptation
The digital SAT uses a multistage adaptive design rather than changing difficulty after every individual answer. Each section has two modules, and the route to module 2 depends on performance in module 1.
This structure makes module 1 important, but it does not make module 2 unimportant. The section score reflects answers across both modules.
Know the section structure
Reading and Writing contains two 32-minute modules, while Math contains two 35-minute modules. Each module includes operational questions plus two pretest questions that do not count toward scoring.
Students cannot identify the pretest questions, so every item should receive a genuine attempt. The test uses their responses as part of a secure standardised assessment process.
Understand module 1
The first module contains a mix of easy, medium and hard questions. It establishes evidence used to select an appropriate mixed-difficulty route for the second module.
Do not rush easy-looking questions to reach difficult ones. Accuracy on every skill and difficulty level contributes to the route and score evidence.
Understand module 2 routing
Based on module 1 performance, module 2 presents a targeted mix that may contain relatively more harder or relatively more easier questions. Both routes still contain mixed difficulty.
The interface does not need to announce the route. Trying to label it during testing distracts from the only useful task: solving the current question.
Reject the easy-module myth
College Board states that a range of section scores is possible regardless of which second module a student sees. Students are not automatically advantaged by a harder route or disadvantaged by a lower-difficulty route.
Scoring considers answer patterns and question characteristics. Estimating a score from how hard the module felt is unreliable.
Reject question-count scoring shortcuts
Digital SAT scoring is not a simple fixed conversion from number correct to a score. College Board uses item response theory and considers characteristics such as question difficulty and the response pattern.
Two students with the same raw number correct may not necessarily receive an identical section score if the questions and patterns differ.
Try every question
Official guidance emphasises doing your best on every item. Wrong answers do not carry an additional guessing penalty, so an educated selection is better than leaving a question unanswered.
Use elimination, estimation and evidence to improve a guess. Do not spend so long on one item that several later questions remain blank.
Manage time within a module
Each module has its own timer. Divide time between steady first-pass work and a short review period instead of reserving an unrealistic amount for one difficult question.
Bluebook shows remaining time and can alert students near the end. Practise with the timer so the display supports pacing rather than increasing anxiety.
Use mark for review
Students can flag a question and return to it while the current module remains open. This allows uncertain work to be separated from questions that can be completed efficiently.
Marking is useful only with a return plan. Leave enough time to revisit flagged items and confirm all intended responses before the module ends.
Respect the module boundary
Students can preview, revisit and change answers within the current module. Once time expires and the next module begins, they cannot return to the earlier module.
Use the final minute for response completeness and obvious entry errors. Do not expect a later section review screen to reopen completed modules.
Avoid guessing the route
A second module may feel harder because it matches personal weaknesses, unfamiliar topics or fatigue, not because of a particular routing label.
Do not celebrate or panic based on perception. Maintain the same process of task identification, evidence, calculation and checking.
Keep module 2 effort high
Some students reduce effort after believing module 1 went poorly. This is harmful because module 2 responses still contribute to the section score.
Treat every new module as a fresh opportunity to earn credit. Focus on questions that can be solved accurately instead of replaying earlier mistakes.
Practise adaptive conditions
Full-length Bluebook practice tests reproduce the adaptive digital format more realistically than untimed question lists. Use them to learn module transitions, navigation, timer and review tools.
After testing, review score information and official rationales. Diagnose content gaps separately from pacing or interface problems.

A single practice result is a sample of performance. Use domain information, recurring error patterns and timing notes to plan the next study cycle.
