UK Driving Licence Guide for Nepali Students explains how long a valid Nepali licence can normally be used in Great Britain, when a GB provisional licence and tests are needed, and why insurance and vehicle documents must be arranged separately. Great Britain means England, Scotland and Wales; Northern Ireland has its own Driver and Vehicle Agency rules.
Information checked on 24 July 2026. Driving-licence rules can depend on residence, vehicle category and licence history, so use the official GOV.UK checker for the individual case before driving.

Start with the official GOV.UK checker
Use the GOV.UK service for driving in Great Britain on a non-GB licence. It asks about the issuing country, residence and vehicle type before giving the relevant route.
Do not rely on a friend’s result. A visitor, a new resident and a person with a previously exchanged licence can receive different guidance.
What the 12-month period means
The Highway Code says a holder of a non-European Community licence who becomes resident may drive on it for a maximum of 12 months from becoming resident. The licence must remain valid.
Record the residence date and plan early. Waiting until month 12 to start a GB licence application can create a period when the student cannot drive.
A valid licence and the correct vehicle category
The foreign licence must authorise the type of vehicle being driven. A motorcycle entitlement is not created by holding only a car category.
Carry the original licence and any translation or supporting document requested by the insurer or authority. A photograph or unofficial translation is not automatically a legal entitlement.
Can a Nepali licence be exchanged?
Great Britain permits direct exchange only for licences from designated countries and territories under current rules. Nepal is not shown on the current designated-country material reviewed for this guide.
Confirm through the live GOV.UK checker because exchange arrangements can change. A non-exchangeable licence holder normally needs the GB theory and practical test route.
Apply for a GB provisional licence early
A provisional licence allows a person to learn under GB conditions; it is not the same as a full licence. Identity and residence evidence must meet DVLA requirements.
Application processing and test availability can take time. Start well before the foreign-licence driving period ends if continued driving is important.
Theory and practical tests
A non-exchangeable licence holder normally passes the theory test and then the practical driving test for a full GB entitlement. Use official DVSA booking services.
Driving experience in Nepal can help, but the test assesses UK road rules, observation, positioning and safe decision-making.
Learning rules with a provisional licence
A learner must follow supervision, L-plate and insurance rules. The supervising driver and vehicle must meet the legal conditions.
Do not assume the old foreign licence continues to give unsupervised entitlement after its allowed period. Check the exact status with DVLA guidance.
Insurance is mandatory
A valid driving licence does not include motor insurance. The driver must be correctly insured for the vehicle, use and licence type before entering a public road.
Tell the insurer the truth about the foreign licence, residence date, provisional status, occupation and intended use. Incorrect information can invalidate cover.
Driving for delivery or paid work
Ordinary social and commuting cover may not insure food delivery, courier work or other business use. Ask the insurer for the required commercial class.
Immigration work permission and driving insurance are separate. Having Student visa work hours does not create delivery insurance.
Vehicle tax, MOT and registration
The vehicle must be lawfully registered, taxed and have a valid MOT where required. These duties remain even when the driver has a valid foreign licence and insurance.
Use GOV.UK to check a vehicle and keep purchase records. Do not rely only on a seller’s screenshot.
Buying a used vehicle
Check MOT history, registration details, finance or theft risk, insurance cost and emissions-zone charges before paying. A cheap purchase can carry high repair or insurance costs.
Transfer keeper details through the official process. The registered keeper is not automatically the legal owner, and neither status replaces insurance.
Hiring a car
A rental company can impose age, licence-duration, deposit and document requirements beyond the general driving entitlement. Ask for written terms before booking.
Read excess, fuel, mileage, additional-driver and damage rules. A third-party website’s insurance may not remove the rental desk deposit.
International Driving Permits
An International Driving Permit is a supporting document for specified international situations; it does not create a licence category or extend the 12-month resident rule.
Use the official checker to see whether one is relevant. Avoid websites selling unofficial international licences.
Northern Ireland is separate
DVLA and the Great Britain checker cover England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland licensing is administered by DVA through nidirect.
A student moving between Great Britain and Northern Ireland should check both systems rather than assuming identical exchange and residence rules.
Learn the Highway Code
Study signs, speed limits, roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, bus lanes, mobile-phone rules and motorway practice. UK traffic drives on the left, but familiarity with that fact alone is not enough.
The Highway Code includes legal requirements marked with words such as MUST and MUST NOT, as well as safety guidance.
Penalty points and disqualification
Driving offences can lead to fines, penalty points or disqualification. Foreign-licence holders are still subject to UK road law.
Report relevant convictions or incidents to the insurer when required. Concealment can create larger financial and legal problems.
