IELTS Band Score Guide for Nepali Students explains section bands, overall-score averaging, rounding rules, raw-score guidance and how universities use component minimums. IELTS reports Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking separately on the 0-9 scale, then averages the four results to calculate the overall band.
Information checked on 25 July 2026 against current official IELTS scoring and result guidance.

Understand the 0-9 band scale
IELTS reports proficiency from band 0, for a test that was not attempted, through band 9, described as expert. Whole and half bands allow more detailed reporting of performance.
A band is evidence of current English performance, not an admission decision by itself. Universities, professional bodies and visa authorities decide which overall and section scores they accept.
Read all five reported numbers
The Test Report Form shows Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking band scores plus an overall band. Each component can reveal a different strength or weakness even when two candidates share the same overall score.
Record the full profile in the application tracker. An institution may reject an otherwise sufficient overall score when one component falls below its stated minimum.
Calculate the overall band
The overall band is the total of the four component bands divided by four. IELTS then rounds the average to the nearest half band under its published rules rather than reporting every decimal.
For planning, calculate the exact average but compare it with official examples. Do not assume that one high component can always compensate for another because the receiving organisation may apply separate minimums.
Apply the official rounding rule
Official IELTS guidance says an average ending in .25 is rounded up to the next half band and an average ending in .75 is rounded up to the next whole band. Other averages are rounded to the nearest half.
For example, an average of 6.25 becomes 6.5, while 6.75 becomes 7.0. Use the four actual component bands, not estimated raw marks, when calculating the overall result.
Understand Listening raw scores
IELTS Listening contains 40 questions, and each correct answer earns one mark before conversion to the 9-band scale. Official examples place average marks around 16 for band 5, 23 for band 6, 30 for band 7 and 35 for band 8.
IELTS warns that exact conversion points can vary slightly by test version. Treat these numbers as preparation guidance rather than a guaranteed conversion for a future test.
Understand Academic Reading raw scores
Academic Reading also contains 40 questions with one mark for each correct answer. Official examples show average marks around 15 for band 5, 23 for band 6, 30 for band 7 and 35 for band 8.
Review both accuracy and timing because unfinished questions reduce the raw score. Use official Academic material so that the practice conversion reflects the booked version.
Understand General Training Reading scores
General Training Reading uses the same 0-9 band scale but normally requires more correct answers for a particular band. Official examples show around 15 for band 4, 23 for band 5, 30 for band 6 and 35 for band 7.
This difference reflects the design and complexity of the Reading tests. Never compare a General Training raw score with an Academic conversion table.
Understand Writing assessment
Writing is marked for task achievement or task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. The criteria focus on relevance, organisation and language control, not grammar alone.
Both writing tasks are assessed, but Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1. Candidates should complete both tasks and reserve enough time to develop and check the longer essay.
Understand Speaking assessment
Speaking is assessed for fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. Official IELTS guidance gives the four areas equal weighting.
An accent does not need to be copied from a native speaker. The goal is clear, natural communication with developed answers, flexible language and understandable pronunciation.
Set the right target band
The correct target comes from the official course, scholarship, professional or visa requirement. A general claim that every university needs the same band can create unnecessary preparation or an unusable result.
Check the programme and intake, then record the required overall and each component minimum. Add a realistic margin when practice scores vary from test to test.
Respect component minimums
A requirement such as overall 6.5 with no component below 6.0 contains two conditions. An average of 6.5 does not satisfy it when Writing is 5.5, even if another skill raises the overall result.
Build preparation priorities from the complete condition. The weakest required component often deserves more attention than raising an already strong section.
Compare practice scores correctly
Use full official practice sections under time limits and convert only Listening and Reading raw scores with the relevant official guidance. Writing and Speaking require criteria-based assessment rather than answer counting.
Track several results to find a stable range. One unusually easy or difficult-feeling practice set should not determine the test date by itself.
Diagnose the reason behind a band
A Reading band may reflect vocabulary, paraphrase recognition, instruction errors or pacing. A Writing band may reflect incomplete task response, weak organisation or limited accuracy rather than a single grammar rule.
Keep an error log and connect each weakness to a specific exercise, feedback task and retest date. This makes score improvement more deliberate.
Know the result timeline
Current official guidance says IELTS on Computer results are generally available in 1-5 days, IELTS on Paper up to 13 days and IELTS Online in 6-8 days. Additional checks can sometimes extend the process.
Allow time for score sharing and institutional processing before the application deadline. A fast result estimate should not replace a full deadline plan.
Understand score validity
IELTS recommends that results be considered valid for two years because language ability can change over time. An accepting organisation can choose a different policy or may ask for newer evidence.
Check the receiving organisation’s rule using the planned enrolment, visa or registration date. Do not assume validity only from the test date shown on the report.
Share the official result properly
The Test Report Form or electronic version provides official confirmation of scores. Organisations may receive results through the IELTS Results Service or another method stated in their application instructions.
Confirm the organisation name and delivery preference, then track when the score was shared and when the application portal marked it received.
Use score data for a retake decision
Compare the result with every target condition, not just the overall band. If one component blocks all applications, focus the retake plan on the assessed criteria and repeated practice evidence for that skill.
Also check deadlines, transfer options and whether the receiving organisation accepts a specific retake service. Do not assume every institution applies the same policy.
Use current official sources
Review the official IELTS scoring explanation, result and sharing guidance and test-type information.
Use the university, professional body or visa authority as the final source for required scores and validity. Requirements and result-delivery procedures can change.
Connect scores with the application plan
For university selection, admission conditions and study-abroad counselling, visit MKS Education. For score diagnostics, Writing and Speaking feedback, and targeted IELTS preparation, explore MKS Prep.
Coordinate the target band, test date, result sharing and application deadline. A score becomes useful only when it meets the exact condition and reaches the organisation on time.
