Use the official current-year table rather than calculating a date yourself. Choose a later test if the documentation cannot be assembled responsibly in time.

Work through the school when possible

College Board describes the school route as usually easier and more efficient. An authorised SSD coordinator can submit and manage the request through SSD Online.

Students and families should provide consent, current information and supporting records promptly. SSD Online itself is for registered school coordinators, not direct family login.

Know the direct family route

A family may submit without the school when the student is homeschooled, the family does not want school involvement or the school cannot access SSD Online.

This route uses the paper Student Eligibility Form and supporting documentation. Incomplete requests are not approved, and new information can restart review time.

Request only needed supports

The request should connect functional limitations in a standardised testing setting with specific accommodations. Include supports genuinely needed for the SAT.

When several tools address the same need, official form guidance may ask the requester to select one appropriate option rather than duplicate alternatives.

Prepare supporting documentation

Documentation should identify the diagnosed disability, describe current functional impact and support the requested accommodation under College Board guidelines.

Records should be complete, legible and relevant. A label without evidence of testing impact may not establish why a specific support is necessary.

Use existing school plans carefully

A current IEP, 504 plan or other formal written programme can help document supports already used in school. The request asks whether accommodations are provided for school tests.

College Board still makes its own determination. Explain differences when the requested SAT accommodation is not included in or used under the school plan.

Monitor the request status

The SSD coordinator can check status, respond to requests for information and access decision letters through SSD Online. Families using a direct paper process receive decision communication through the available official channels.

Do not assume silence means approval. Follow up early enough to supply additional documentation before the test deadline.

Read the decision letter

The decision identifies approved and denied accommodations and may include an eligibility code or test-specific details. Save the document and review it with the school coordinator.

If a needed support was denied, use the official reconsideration or additional-information process. Do not use an unapproved accommodation on test day.

Register with accommodations

When registering for SAT Weekend after approval, answer yes when asked whether to test with accommodations. This connects approved supports with the registration.

If registration already exists, follow official guidance to ensure accommodations are applied. Approval alone may not update every registration automatically.

Check the admission ticket

After completing Bluebook exam setup, confirm that approved accommodations appear correctly on the admission ticket or associated registration information.

Contact SSD promptly if expected supports are missing. College Board notes that applying a request less than two weeks before testing is extremely unlikely.

Understand centre-based supports

Most accommodations are provided at a test centre and managed in Bluebook. Examples can include extended time, extended breaks, embedded text-to-speech and preferential seating, depending on approval.

The exact experience follows the approved support and administration type. Students should not infer timing or break rules from another person’s accommodation.

Understand school-based supports

Some accommodations normally require school-based testing, such as certain assistive technology, braille, human reader or scribe, paper testing, dictation and specialised settings.

If a homeschooled student or school cannot administer an approved school-based support, contact SSD early to arrange an appropriate location.

Review Fall 2026 changes

Beginning Fall 2026, students approved for embedded text-to-speech can take SAT Weekend at a test centre unless another school-based accommodation applies.

College Board instructs students approved for text-to-speech or screen reader support to bring wired, non-Bluetooth headphones that cannot record. Recheck the current rule before testing.

Practise with approved tools

Use official Bluebook practice with the approved timing, assistive technology and interface features whenever possible. College Board provides guidance for practising with accommodations.

Test the actual device and support workflow before the administration. Interface familiarity reduces technical delay and helps pacing plans reflect approved timing.

Plan breaks and module transitions

Bluebook manages many accommodated timing and break settings. Students should understand when breaks occur and whether leaving a module prevents returning to it.

Follow the on-screen and proctor instructions for the approved configuration. Do not apply standard-time assumptions to an accommodated test.

Request temporary support correctly

College Board has a separate process for temporary impairments such as a recent injury. Availability depends on the assessment and student situation, and the school SSD coordinator is usually the fastest route.

Temporary support is not automatic. Submit the official request with the required documentation and consider postponement when the current test cannot be supported in time.
