Know what Critical Reasoning measures
Official GMAT content describes Critical Reasoning as the ability to make arguments, evaluate arguments and formulate or evaluate a plan of action. The task is logical analysis, not memory of business facts.
A passage may discuss medicine, policy, marketing or science, but every decision must rest on the supplied statements and the question asked.
Use the current Verbal context
Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension together form the 23-question, 45-minute Verbal section. The exam does not publish a fixed number of each type for every test.
Practise mixed Verbal sets so switching between an argument and a longer passage does not disturb pacing or method.
Read the question first
Official Verbal strategy advises reading the Critical Reasoning question before the material on which it is based. This identifies the standard the correct choice must meet.
A weaken choice, a required assumption and a supported inference can discuss the same topic but perform completely different logical work.
Separate argument components
Mark the conclusion, evidence, background and any opposing view. The conclusion is the statement the author wants accepted; evidence is offered in support.
Background can be relevant without doing inferential work. Labelling roles prevents a vivid fact from being mistaken for the main claim.
Find the conclusion by role
Words such as therefore, thus and consequently can signal a conclusion, but an argument may omit them or place its conclusion first.
Ask which statement the other claims are intended to support. Test each candidate until the direction of support is clear.
State the evidence precisely
Paraphrase the facts without adding causation, certainty or a wider population. Small changes in scope can manufacture an argument the passage never made.
Keep comparison groups, time periods and quantities visible because answer-choice traps often alter one of them.
Expose the reasoning gap
Compare evidence with conclusion and ask what must be true for the move to work. The gap may concern an alternative cause, an unrepresentative sample or an ignored cost.
Predict the vulnerable link in plain language before evaluating choices. The prediction need not match exact wording; it gives the answer a job.
Handle strengthen questions
A strengthener makes the conclusion more likely by supporting the missing link, removing a competing explanation or showing that a plan can work.
It does not have to prove the conclusion. Compare each choice with the original argument and select the one with the strongest relevant positive effect.
Handle weaken questions
A weakener reduces confidence in the conclusion while allowing the stated evidence to remain true. Look for alternative causes, failed implementation or a comparison that was not controlled.
Do not attack an unimportant detail. The official sample factory question weakens a causal claim by showing a similar cost decline without the new process.
Handle required assumptions
A required assumption is an unstated claim the argument needs. Apply the negation test: if the logical negation breaks the reasoning, the original choice is necessary.
Necessity is narrower than usefulness. A strong statement can help an argument yet still be unnecessary.
Handle sufficient-assumption tasks
When a question asks what enables the conclusion to follow, seek a choice that closes the entire logical gap rather than one merely helpful fact.
Combine it with the given evidence and check whether the conclusion is secured without importing another idea.
Handle flaw questions
Describe what the reasoning does, not just what information is absent. Common flaws include confusing correlation with cause, using an unrepresentative sample and shifting a definition.
Match the abstract answer to the actual structure. Familiar flaw vocabulary is useful only when both sides of the described error appear.
Handle inference questions
For inference, treat the passage as the complete evidence base and choose what follows most securely. Use conservative language and avoid adding a causal story.
A choice can be realistic yet unsupported. The correct inference survives because the statements require or strongly support it.
Evaluate plans of action
Identify the goal, proposed action and assumptions about adoption, resources, incentives and side effects. Ask whether the action actually controls the variable linked to the goal.
A useful evaluation choice changes the probability of success rather than merely describing the organisation or market.
Analyse cause and effect
Whenever evidence shows two events together, test reverse causation, a third factor, coincidence and whether the pattern continues in the relevant group.
Strengthening can rule alternatives out or establish the proposed mechanism; weakening can introduce a credible rival explanation.
Analyse surveys and samples
Check who was measured, who responded, how the question was phrased and whether the sample represents the conclusion’s population.
A large sample is not automatically representative, while a smaller carefully selected sample can be more informative.
Analyse comparisons
Confirm that two groups differ in the claimed factor and are similar on relevant alternatives. Also check whether metrics, dates and definitions match.
A before-and-after comparison can be distorted by broader changes occurring at the same time.
Analyse percentages and totals
A percentage can rise while a count falls when the base changes. Track numerator, denominator and whether the argument switches between rate and total.
Do not calculate unless needed; first identify which quantity the conclusion actually claims.
Control scope and language
Compare some, most and all; possible and certain; local and universal. An answer can address the right idea but overstate its reach.
Preserve every condition in the passage when testing a choice. Strong wording needs equally strong evidence.
Ignore outside knowledge
Official guidance says specialist knowledge is unnecessary and factual premises do not need real-world judgment. Accept the passage’s facts for the question.
Outside knowledge often creates imagined exceptions or objections that the test did not provide.
Evaluate one choice at a time
Translate each answer into its effect on the conclusion: strengthens, weakens, does nothing or addresses a different claim. Avoid choosing by topical similarity.
When two remain, name the exact link each affects. The correct choice performs the requested task more directly.
Recognise common trap choices
Traps may restate evidence, discuss an irrelevant comparison, reverse cause and effect, solve a different problem or use unsupported extreme language.
A true statement can still be wrong when it has no bearing on the argument’s conclusion.
Manage Critical Reasoning pacing
The whole Verbal section averages slightly under two minutes per question, but Reading Comprehension creates uneven timing. Use section checkpoints rather than forcing identical time on every item.
If a final distinction remains uncertain, make the best supported selection and protect completion because unanswered items receive a penalty.
Use Question Review and Edit
After all questions in a section are answered, the official tool permits review as time remains and editing of up to three responses. Bookmark questions with a specific logical doubt.
Change an answer only when a corrected conclusion, missed scope word or new gap analysis supplies concrete evidence.
Build a Critical Reasoning error log
Record task type, conclusion, evidence, predicted gap, selected trap, time, confidence and the earliest faulty decision.
Then explain why each wrong option fails. This turns review into a reusable rule instead of answer memorisation.
Practise transfer
After correcting a question, solve a fresh argument with the same logical structure in a different topic. Transfer confirms that the reasoning, not the wording, was learned.
Mix strengthen, weaken, assumption and inference tasks so the question stem controls the method.
