It also explains when a former temporary resident may claim a Departing Australia Superannuation Payment.

What a Tax File Number is
The ATO issues a TFN as a unique number for tax and super records. It is an important identifier and can be misused for identity fraud.
A person keeps the same TFN for life, including after changing a job, name, visa or leaving and returning to Australia. Do not apply for a new number because the old letter is missing.
Applying for a TFN is free
The ATO does not charge to issue a TFN. An eligible foreign-passport holder or temporary visitor with work rights can use the official individual auto-registration process.
Do not pay a social-media service for a guaranteed or faster TFN. A third party cannot create a lawful tax identity outside the ATO.
Apply after arriving in Australia
The foreign-passport temporary-visitor process requires the applicant to be in Australia and hold an eligible visa or valid overseas Student visa. The ATO validates passport and travel details against government records.
Enter names exactly as they appear in official documents and provide a reliable Australian postal address.
Allow up to 28 days
The ATO says a TFN should arrive within 28 days after it receives a completed application. The notice is sent to the postal address entered.
Do not lodge repeat applications during this period. If it does not arrive, use the ATO’s official contact channel to locate the existing application or number.
Protect the TFN
A TFN is not a public student number. Share it only where lawfully needed, such as through a verified employer declaration, bank process, super fund or authorised tax service.
Do not place it on a resume, rental application, public form or ordinary email. Store the ATO notice securely.
Complete the TFN declaration
An employer uses the TFN declaration to work out how much tax to withhold from wages. Answer tax-residency and tax-free-threshold questions based on actual circumstances.
If the employee has applied for a TFN, the declaration can record that fact. ATO withholding guidance gives 28 days to provide the issued number before higher no-TFN withholding can apply.
TFN and ABN are not interchangeable
A TFN identifies an individual in the tax system. An Australian Business Number relates to business activity.
An employer cannot lawfully avoid employment obligations simply by telling an ordinary worker to obtain an ABN. The real working arrangement determines whether the person is an employee or contractor.
Tax residency is separate from immigration
ATO tax residency is not the same as visa, citizenship or permanent-residence status. A temporary visa holder can be an Australian resident for tax purposes.
The ATO says an overseas student in a course lasting six months or more may be an Australian tax resident, but the residency tests and personal circumstances still control the answer.
Why tax residency matters
Residency affects rates, the tax-free threshold and which income must be declared. A temporary resident can also have special foreign-income treatment.
Use the ATO residency tool and current guidance. Do not select resident only because it appears to reduce withholding.
Understand PAYG withholding
Employers withhold pay as you go tax from wages and report income through payroll. The withheld amount is a prepayment toward the final tax outcome.
Compare payslips, bank deposits and the income statement in ATO online services. Report missing or false wages to the employer and seek official help.
Link ATO online services securely
An individual can use myGov to access ATO online services and myTax. Follow the official linking process and protect the myGov password and code.
The ATO will not ask a student to move money to a safe account or reveal a login code to stop arrest or deportation.
Check whether a tax return is required
Australian income years normally run from 1 July to 30 June. Whether a return or non-lodgment advice is needed depends on income, withholding, residency and other circumstances.
Use current ATO instructions after the income year. A refund is not guaranteed, and tax agents must be properly registered.
Declare income accurately
Include assessable wages and other income required for the person’s tax status. Cash pay is not automatically tax-free.
Foreign income treatment can differ for an Australian resident, temporary resident and foreign resident. Keep exchange-rate and payment records and obtain advice for cross-border income.
Claim only eligible deductions
A deduction must meet tax-law requirements and be supported by records. A personal course or ordinary living expense is not deductible merely because it helps a career.
Keep receipts and explain the connection to earning assessable income. Do not buy a false deduction package or invent kilometres, uniforms or equipment.
What superannuation is
Superannuation is long-term retirement saving. An eligible employer pays contributions into a complying super fund in addition to ordinary wages under current rules.
Check the super fund name, member number and contributions on payslips and fund statements. Multiple jobs can create multiple accounts and duplicate fees.
Give the employer correct super details
Complete the standard-choice process where eligible and keep the fund details. An employer may use a default fund if no valid choice is provided.
Never send super or myGov login credentials to a recruiter. A legitimate employer needs fund identifiers, not account passwords.
Track unpaid super
Compare employer records with the fund account because a payslip line does not prove the contribution arrived. Contribution timing can differ from each pay cycle.
If amounts remain missing, contact the employer and follow ATO unpaid-super guidance. Keep contracts, payslips, rosters and bank records.
Departing Australia Superannuation Payment
An eligible temporary resident who worked and accumulated super may claim a DASP after leaving Australia and after the temporary visa has ceased, subject to the current conditions and withholding tax.
The claimant generally must not be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident. Collect fund and employment details before departure even though the claim follows later.
