Know the current Critical Reasoning task

The current Verbal section contains 23 Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning questions in 45 minutes. Official exam content describes Critical Reasoning as making and evaluating arguments and plans.

The passages are usually short and specialised subject knowledge is not required. The challenge is the relationship among statements, not whether the topic feels familiar.

Read the question stem first

Official Verbal guidance recommends determining exactly what the question asks and reading the question before the related material. This sets the job before details compete for attention.

Confirm that the stem asks for an assumption required by the reasoning. Do not apply an assumption method to an inference, strengthen, weaken or evaluate question.

Find the conclusion

The conclusion is the claim the author wants the evidence to support. Ask what statement the other information is trying to establish.

Indicator words can help, but meaning controls. A sentence introduced by therefore may contain background inside a longer structure, while a conclusion may appear without an obvious signal.

Separate evidence from conclusion

Evidence is presented as support or factual information within the argument. Accept it for the question instead of debating its real-world truth.

Paraphrase evidence and conclusion separately. This makes the unsupported move between them easier to see.

Identify the reasoning gap

Ask why the evidence might be true while the conclusion is still false. The missing connection often reveals what the author must assume.

State the gap in neutral language before reading choices. A useful prediction can be broad, such as no relevant alternative cause or the sample represents the target group.

Understand necessary support

A required assumption does not need to prove the conclusion. It must be something the argument depends on to maintain its stated reasoning.

Avoid searching for the strongest helpful statement. A dramatic claim can strengthen the argument while remaining unnecessary.

Use the denial test

Rephrase a candidate choice as false or as its logical denial. Then ask whether the argument’s support collapses or develops a serious gap.

Deny the whole meaning accurately. Turning some into none or all into not all requires care; a distorted denial can make the wrong choice appear necessary.

Apply the test after relevance

First confirm that the choice connects to the evidence-conclusion link. Denying an irrelevant statement can sound disruptive while leaving the argument untouched.

Use the denial test most carefully on the final close choices. It is a verification method, not a substitute for understanding the argument.

Handle causal assumptions

When evidence shows two events moving together and the conclusion claims causation, ask about alternative causes, reverse direction and whether the effect can occur without the proposed cause.

A necessary assumption often protects the causal link enough for the argument to function. It need not establish that no other factor ever matters.

Handle plans and recommendations

A plan argument moves from an action to a desired result. Identify the mechanism that is supposed to produce the goal.

Required assumptions may concern implementation, target response, side effects or whether another condition blocks the result. Keep the assumption tied to the stated objective.

Handle surveys and samples

When a conclusion generalises from a sample, inspect selection, response, size and similarity to the target population.

The argument may require that the observed group is not systematically different in a way that changes the conclusion. Do not demand perfect representation unless the reasoning needs it.

Handle comparisons

A comparison assumes the groups, periods or measures are comparable in the relevant respect. Look for a changed definition, missing denominator or unequal condition.

The necessary bridge is limited to the conclusion’s comparison. An answer about an unrelated difference can be true without affecting the reasoning.

Handle numerical arguments

Check denominators, totals, rates, percentages and time periods. A rise in a number does not establish a rise in its proportion, and average changes do not describe every member.

Translate the relation into simple labels or equations. The required assumption often becomes visible when units are made explicit.

Handle definitions and categories

An argument may move from one label to another as though the categories match. Ask whether membership in the first actually establishes membership in the second.

Do not import a dictionary definition that the stimulus does not require. Focus on how the argument uses the terms.

Handle time shifts

Evidence from one period may be used to predict another. The reasoning may require relevant conditions to remain sufficiently similar.

Avoid demanding that nothing changes at all. Identify only the condition whose change would undermine the particular prediction.

Handle missing alternatives

If the conclusion selects one explanation, policy or interpretation, ask whether another viable alternative would account for the evidence or meet the goal.

The assumption may rule out one relevant alternative rather than every imaginable possibility. Match scope to the argument.

Watch conditional reasoning

Distinguish a sufficient condition from a necessary condition. If A guarantees B, observing B does not automatically establish A.

Write a short arrow diagram when the logic is dense. Do not reverse or negate a conditional relationship without justification.

Respect scope words

Words such as some, most, all, only, can, likely and must control how much a statement claims. A required assumption is often narrower than an attractive answer.

Compare the choice with the exact conclusion scope, population and time frame. Reject a choice that changes the target.

Distinguish assumption from inference

An inference must follow from the given statements. An assumption is unstated support the author needs for the conclusion.

If a choice is provable from the evidence but does not bridge the argument, it may fit an inference task and still be wrong for an assumption question.

Distinguish assumption from strengthen

A strengthening statement improves support but may be optional. A required assumption is a dependency: without it, the stated reasoning cannot stand.

Use denial to test dependency. If the argument remains workable after the choice is denied, the choice is not required even if it sounds favourable.

Predict before reading choices

Describe the missing link in your own words before answer choices introduce new topics. Keep the prediction functional rather than expecting exact wording.

A choice can be correct without matching your sentence if it protects the same link. Evaluate logical effect, not vocabulary similarity.

Test every part of a choice

A compound answer must be necessary as a whole. One relevant clause cannot rescue another clause that is excessive or unrelated.

Pay special attention to and, only, never and all. These terms can make an otherwise helpful statement too strong to be required.

Reject restatements

A restatement of evidence does not automatically supply the missing bridge. Ask whether it adds the dependency the conclusion needs.

Likewise, a paraphrase of the conclusion may merely repeat what is being argued rather than justify it.

Reject irrelevant truths

A choice can be realistic, important or generally true and still have no effect on the argument. Topic relevance is weaker than logical relevance.

Trace a direct path from the choice to the evidence-conclusion link. If no path exists, eliminate it.

Reject answers that are too strong

Necessary assumptions are often modest. A choice claiming that one factor is the only factor or that a result always occurs may exceed what the argument requires.

Deny the strong statement carefully. The argument may need at least one instance or reasonable reliability, not universality.

Avoid outside knowledge

Official guidance says not to judge the actual truth of facts presented in Critical Reasoning. Treat the stimulus as the working information.

Personal experience with education, business, health or public policy can make an irrelevant option feel compelling. Return to the stated link.

Use official questions for calibration

Official sample questions, the Starter Kit and official Verbal practice show the wording and logical precision expected on the exam.

Maintain an assumption error log

Record the conclusion, evidence, gap, your prediction, chosen option, trap type and the denial that confirms the correct answer.

Build accuracy untimed, then use short sets and mixed Verbal practice. Time the complete question, not only answer-choice review.

If two choices remain, return to the conclusion and dependency test. Do not spend time debating which statement is more interesting.

The current exam lets you bookmark questions, review as many as time allows and edit up to three answers after completing the section.

Make a supported first-pass choice and bookmark only for a defined unresolved gap. No review screen appears when section time is exhausted.

Follow a weekly routine

Combine single-type assumption drills, mixed Critical Reasoning sets, full Verbal practice and error-log review. Re-solve missed questions after a delay.

Track whether errors arise from task identification, conclusion finding, gap prediction, denial or answer scope. Shift practice toward the dominant cause.

Prepare for the final week

Review personal trap patterns and a small set of official questions that demonstrate clean dependency reasoning. Keep timing realistic.

Avoid memorising a large catalogue of argument labels. The evidence-conclusion-gap method should remain usable even when the topic is unfamiliar.
