GRE Test Format Guide for Nepali Students explains the current computer-delivered General Test, its five sections, exact question counts and timing, section-level adaptivity, navigation tools, question families and score scales. It also separates the format introduced on 22 September 2023 from older practice materials that still show a longer exam.

What the GRE General Test measures

ETS describes the General Test as measuring verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking and analytical writing developed over time rather than knowledge from one specialised field. It is used by some graduate, business and law programs.

Whether a particular university requires or accepts it is a separate admission question. The test format does not create a universal admission score.

The overall test is about 1 hour 58 minutes

The current standard computer-delivered structure has five timed sections. Adding the listed section times gives 118 minutes: 30 for writing, 41 for Verbal and 47 for Quantitative.

Reporting and check-in take additional time. Candidates should use the appointment instructions, not the 118-minute testing figure, to plan travel or room availability.

Analytical Writing always comes first

ETS states that the Analytical Writing section is first. It has one 30-minute Analyze an Issue task asking the candidate to evaluate an issue and develop a supported position in response to specific instructions.

The current standard General Test does not include the old Analyze an Argument task. Materials that teach two essays describe the pre-22 September 2023 format.

Verbal and Quantitative order can vary

After writing, the two Verbal and two Quantitative sections may appear in different orders. A candidate should be ready to change reasoning mode without assuming a fixed V-Q-V-Q sequence.

The on-screen section label and timer should guide the response. Scratch-work organisation can also help prevent methods from one measure carrying into the next.

Current Verbal section timing

The first Verbal section contains 12 questions in 18 minutes. The second contains 15 questions in 23 minutes. Together, the reported Verbal measure draws on 27 operational questions.

Average time per question is only a planning reference because reading passages and short text items require different amounts of work. Use section checkpoints instead of forcing identical time on every item.

Current Quantitative section timing

The first Quantitative section contains 12 questions in 21 minutes. The second contains 15 questions in 26 minutes. Together, the reported Quantitative measure draws on 27 operational questions.

Reading a data set or complex condition may take longer than a direct calculation. Reserve time to check units, constraints and answer format.

There are 54 objective questions

The four Verbal and Quantitative sections contain 54 questions in total, in addition to the writing task. This count follows the current ETS structure table for the standard computer-delivered administration.

Do not compare raw totals directly with older 80-question practice tests. The current score scales remain familiar, but the testing experience and question count differ.

Verbal is section-level adaptive

ETS explains that performance on the first Verbal section helps determine the difficulty level of the second Verbal section. The adaptation happens between sections, not after each individual question.

Within a section, every question contributes equally to the raw score according to ETS. Candidates should keep collecting supported correct answers instead of trying to identify a hidden weight.

Quantitative is section-level adaptive

The same section-level principle applies to Quantitative Reasoning. The first Quant section influences the second section’s difficulty, while the final scaled score accounts for the adaptive path through equating.

A harder-looking second section is not a score report. Focus on the displayed task and wait for official results rather than interpreting difficulty during the test.

You can move within a section

ETS says the computer-delivered design allows candidates to skip questions within a section, return to them and change answers while that section remains open. This differs from question-by-question adaptive tests that lock each response.

Once a timed section ends, do not expect to reopen it. Practise the actual review interface with official POWERPREP.

The review screen supports pacing

Use the review function to identify unanswered or marked questions within the current section. Marking is a navigation tool, not extra time, so leave a realistic review buffer.

Answer every question for which a supported choice can be made because ETS bases raw Verbal and Quantitative scores on the number correct and does not describe a wrong-answer penalty.

The current table lists five sections

ETS’s current structure lists writing, two Verbal sections and two Quantitative sections. Its comparison table shows that the older format also had a separate unscored or research section that varied.

Therefore, older advice about a sixth experimental section should not be applied to the current standard structure. Candidates must still follow any appointment-specific instructions ETS provides.

Plan without an unscheduled break

The current section times form one compact test. ETS strategy guidance warns that section timing will not stop when a candidate takes an unscheduled break.

Approved disability or health-related accommodations may provide different authorised conditions. Only the accommodation decision and test-centre or at-home instructions define those conditions.

Verbal tests reasoning through language

ETS says Verbal measures inference, conclusions from incomplete information, author assumptions and perspective, levels of meaning, text structure, important points and relationships among words and concepts.

The goal is not vocabulary alone. Reading logic, evidence and context influence performance across the measure.

Reading Comprehension questions

Reading Comprehension presents passages and asks candidates to interpret, infer, identify function, evaluate evidence or recognise a main point. A question may use single-answer multiple choice, multiple-answer selection or selection of a sentence in the passage.

Read the exact direction because the required response format can change. An answer should be supported by the passage rather than by outside opinion.

Text Completion questions

Text Completion removes one or more words from a passage and provides choices for each blank. All selected words must create the intended coherent meaning; partial completion is not treated as a set of independent points.

Use contrast, cause, qualification and tone clues before testing choices. A familiar word can still be wrong for the sentence’s logic.

Sentence Equivalence questions

Sentence Equivalence asks for two choices that complete one blank and create sentences alike in meaning. The two correct words need not be direct dictionary synonyms in every context.

Select the pair only after confirming both grammar and overall sentence meaning. One plausible word alone is insufficient.

Quantitative content areas

ETS defines the Quantitative foundations as arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis. The measure tests understanding, interpretation, modelling and problem solving with elementary concepts.

The published Math Review and Math Conventions clarify scope and assumptions. They are better references for current coverage than a random formula list.

Quantitative Comparison questions

Quantitative Comparison presents Quantity A and Quantity B and asks about their relationship. The standard answer relationships must be learned exactly, including the option that the relationship cannot be determined.

Testing valid cases, signs, zero, fractions and constraints can be faster than performing a full symbolic solution.

Multiple-choice quantitative questions

Some Quantitative questions request one answer, while others explicitly request one or more answers. The interface and wording show which response is required.

For multiple-answer items, evaluate every option. Finding one correct selection does not complete the task when more may apply.

Numeric Entry questions

Numeric Entry requires a number in an answer box, sometimes as an integer or decimal and sometimes as a fraction. There are no answer choices to use for estimation or elimination.

Follow rounding and format directions, and verify that the entered value represents the requested quantity rather than an intermediate result.

Data Interpretation sets

A group of Quantitative questions may refer to the same table, chart or graph. Check title, axis, unit, scale, legend, category and whether values are exact or approximate.

Reusing correct setup work can save time, but each question may request a different comparison, rate or total.

The on-screen calculator is limited

ETS’s test and POWERPREP include an on-screen calculator for Quantitative work. It supports computation but does not replace algebraic setup, estimation or interpretation.

Practice opening and closing it, transferring displayed results and deciding when scratch work is faster. Avoid rounding too early when the question needs a precise value.

The writing editor is basic

ETS says the writing tool supports inserting, deleting, cut-and-paste and undo. It does not provide spellcheck or grammar checking.

Practise composing and revising in a plain editor under 30 minutes. Leave a few minutes to check clarity, missing words and obvious errors.

Verbal and Quant scores use 130 to 170

ETS reports each of the Verbal and Quantitative measures on a 130-to-170 scale in one-point increments. A raw count correct is converted to a scaled score through equating.

Because equating accounts for variation in difficulty and the adaptive route, an unofficial raw-score conversion chart cannot guarantee the reported result.

Analytical Writing uses 0 to 6

The Analytical Writing score is reported from 0 to 6 in half-point increments. ETS describes holistic evaluation and use of its e-rater scoring engine in the scoring process.

Review the official scoring guides and sample commentary to understand performance levels instead of focusing only on essay length.

Percentiles require current data

A percentile compares performance with a reference group and can be updated. Use the current ETS interpretive data linked from the score page when discussing percentile standing.

A percentile is not a university admission probability. Each program decides how, or whether, it uses scores.

POWERPREP reproduces important tools

ETS says POWERPREP helps candidates learn question types, the on-screen calculator, moving between questions, changing answers within a section, timing and scoring. This makes it the preferred format rehearsal.

Use at least one simulation under realistic conditions. Third-party interfaces can teach content but may not accurately reproduce ETS navigation or timing.

Test-centre and at-home delivery

ETS currently advertises both test-centre and at-home General Test registration, subject to location, availability and requirements. The scored structure is the General Test, while check-in, room and equipment procedures differ.

Read the rules for the booked mode. Do not assume a practice platform, test-centre visit and at-home proctoring process use identical procedures.

Identification is part of the format experience

The account name must match the identification used on test day, and country-specific ID requirements apply. A candidate who understands every section can still be unable to test if the required identity conditions are not met.

Check accepted documents for citizenship, location and mode before registration, then check again before the appointment.

How the shorter format differs from the old GRE

Before 22 September 2023, ETS listed two 30-minute writing tasks, two 20-question Verbal sections of 30 minutes each, two 20-question Quantitative sections of 35 minutes each and a varying unscored or research section.

The current test has one Issue essay, shorter Verbal and Quant sections and no separate experimental section in the five-section structure. Remove old timing assumptions from practice plans.

A format-mastery workflow

  1. Memorise the structure. Know five sections and current times.
  2. Learn each question family. Read the response directions closely.
  3. Practise navigation. Skip, mark, return and change within a section.
  4. Train exact timing. Use 18, 23, 21, 26 and 30-minute blocks.
  5. Use official software. Rehearse with POWERPREP tools.
  6. Verify delivery rules. Check the booked mode and ID.
  7. Interpret scores correctly. Use official scales and current percentiles.
