Know the official inference skill
College Board describes Inferences as drawing a reasonable inference from explicit and implicit information and ideas in a text. It appears in the Information and Ideas domain.
A common official stem asks which choice most logically completes the text, often after evidence, a study description or a developing argument.
Understand what an inference is
An inference is a conclusion supported by the passage even when the author does not state it in identical words. It combines evidence with necessary reasoning.
It is not a guess, prediction from general knowledge or claim that could be true under additional facts.
Use the must-be-supported standard
Ask which option has the shortest logical distance from the evidence. The correct choice should require little or no new assumption.
If a statement is only one possible explanation among several, the passage does not establish it strongly enough.
Identify the conclusion slot
Many inference passages end with a blank or a question about what the evidence suggests. Determine what kind of statement belongs there: result, comparison, explanation, prediction or implication.
This task label narrows the answer before the options introduce distractions.
List the explicit facts
Paraphrase the decisive evidence in simple terms. Include direction, group, condition and outcome.
Do not rewrite every sentence. Focus on facts that constrain the conclusion.
Notice implicit relationships
Contrast, cause, comparison, sequence and qualification may connect facts without a direct concluding sentence. Identify what follows when those relationships are preserved.
Do not strengthen the relationship beyond the wording.
Predict a modest conclusion
Before reading options closely, state the safest conclusion supported by the facts. Use may, likely or suggests when the passage is cautious.
A modest prediction helps resist an exciting but overstated choice.
Match the population
If evidence concerns one sample, species, age group or region, the conclusion should not automatically cover a larger population.
Generalisation requires evidence that the sample represents the target group.
Match the condition
Carry experimental conditions, time periods and environmental limits into the inference. A result under one treatment does not necessarily apply without it.
Options often remove a condition and become too broad.
Match certainty
Distinguish can, may, tends to, likely and must. Evidence supporting possibility does not establish inevitability.
Extreme words such as always, never, proves and entirely require unusually strong passage support.
Match direction
Preserve whether a value rose, fell, stayed similar or differed between groups. Do not reverse cause and outcome or predictor and result.
Restate comparative options with symbols or plain labels when wording is dense.
Distinguish correlation and causation
An association between variables does not prove that one causes the other. A causal inference requires an appropriate design and passage support.
Reject options introducing a mechanism when the text only reports a relationship.
Handle experimental passages
Identify treatment, comparison, measured outcome and result. Infer only what the design can support.
Check whether random assignment, controls or alternative explanations matter to the conclusion presented.
Handle observational studies
Observational evidence can support an association but may not isolate causation. Keep the inference within the observed population and measures.
A realistic causal story remains unsupported if the study did not test it.
Handle hypothesis passages
When researchers propose a hypothesis and present evidence, determine whether the result supports, challenges or leaves it unresolved.
Support is not identical to proof. One compatible result may still allow other explanations.
Handle literature passages
Infer a character’s attitude, intention or likely reaction from narration, dialogue and action. Preserve ambiguity when the text is subtle.
Do not diagnose personality or invent backstory beyond the excerpt.
Handle history and humanities passages
Track the source, scholar or author’s viewpoint. An inference may concern how new evidence changes an interpretation.
Do not apply modern knowledge or a general historical narrative not supplied in the text.
Handle quantitative evidence
Read table or graph title, axes, units, categories and values. Translate the proposed inference into a comparison the data can test.
Do not infer trends beyond the displayed range or causation from a graphical association.
Reject the possibility trap
An option may be possible but unsupported. Ask what evidence would be needed to distinguish it from other possibilities.
If that evidence is absent, eliminate the choice.
Reject the new-fact trap
Some answers introduce a fact that sounds relevant but never appears in the passage. The test does not reward outside expertise.
Every key noun and relationship should connect to supplied information.
Reject the scope trap
Watch changes from some to all, one study to a field, a short period to permanent effect or a measured outcome to overall success.
Choose the answer whose boundaries match the evidence.
Reject the reversal trap
Options may swap the group with the higher value, reverse an author’s position or claim that the evidence challenges a hypothesis it actually supports.
Label roles and direction before comparing complex sentences.
Reject the causal trap
A cause-and-effect answer often feels explanatory, but it is wrong when the passage reports only correlation or does not rule out alternatives.
Prefer the weaker supported association when that is all the evidence establishes.
Use elimination logically
For each answer, identify a precise failure: outside fact, excessive scope, wrong direction, causal leap or unsupported certainty.
The correct answer remains after evidence-based elimination, not because it sounds academic.
Manage inference timing
Identify the conclusion slot, list decisive facts, predict modestly and compare scope. Avoid rereading the whole passage after every option.
If two choices remain, ask which requires fewer assumptions and better matches certainty.
Review a close inference
Return to the exact sentence or data point that distinguishes the finalists. Test every clause in each option.
Change the answer only when specific evidence resolves the difference.
