Who should use UCAS?
UCAS is the central application service used for most full-time undergraduate courses at UK universities and colleges. A Nepali student can apply independently or link an application to a school, college or registered adviser centre.
Using a centre does not transfer ownership of the application. The applicant remains responsible for accurate personal details, education history, course choices and declarations. Keep access to the email address and phone number used for the account.
Undergraduate and postgraduate routes are different
Most undergraduate applicants use UCAS, but many postgraduate taught and research programmes accept applications directly through the university. Conservatoires, teacher training and some specialist courses can also use different UCAS services or rules.
Check the exact course page before preparing documents. Do not create an undergraduate application merely because the institution is in the UK; use the application route named by that provider.
Build the application timeline from Nepal
Work backwards from the course deadline, allowing time for course research, transcripts, English testing, a reference and several personal-statement drafts. A school or adviser may set an internal deadline earlier than the UCAS deadline so it can check the application and add the reference.
Nepal is five hours and forty-five minutes ahead of the UK during Greenwich Mean Time and four hours and forty-five minutes ahead during British Summer Time. Treat every published 18:00 UK deadline as a firm UK-time cutoff and submit well before it.
Key 2027 entry dates
UCAS opened 2027 applications on 12 May 2026 and allows completed applications to be submitted from 1 September 2026. The equal-consideration deadline is 15 October 2026 for Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine or science courses.
For most other undergraduate courses, the equal-consideration deadline is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. Applications received by 30 June are sent to universities normally; later applications enter Clearing. The final 2027 entry application deadline is 23 September 2027.
What equal consideration means
An application submitted by the relevant equal-consideration deadline must be considered without being disadvantaged merely because it arrived later than another on-time application. It does not guarantee an offer, interview or available place.
Popular courses can be highly competitive. Meeting the minimum academic profile only establishes eligibility; universities can also assess subject preparation, the personal statement, reference, admissions tests, interview performance and contextual information.
Research the course before the university name
Compare the exact modules, assessment style, placement options, accreditation, campus, teaching location and progression routes. Two courses with similar titles can differ significantly in mathematics content, laboratory work, professional recognition or internship structure.
Read the current course page and save a PDF or screenshot of essential information. University rankings can be one signal, but they should not replace course fit, affordability, support and realistic entry requirements.
Check entry requirements course by course
UK universities set their own entry criteria and can interpret international qualifications differently. A course page may list UK qualifications without showing every Nepali equivalent, so contact admissions for a written assessment when Nepal-specific criteria are unclear.
Ask about the exact award, board, subjects, grades and year of completion. Do not convert Nepali marks into UCAS Tariff points yourself unless the university explicitly provides that method.
How Nepali qualifications are assessed
Universities can accept a wide range of global qualifications, but there is no single UCAS list that forces every provider to accept the same Nepali award. The institution decides whether the qualification and grades are suitable for the course.
Provide complete names such as National Examination Board, programme or stream, subjects and final or pending status. If foundation study is required, compare progression conditions and total additional cost before applying.
Confirm the institution can sponsor a Student visa
An international applicant who needs a Student visa must ultimately study with a licensed student sponsor. Check the current Home Office register and confirm that the course is eligible for sponsorship before paying a large non-refundable deposit.
A university appearing in UCAS does not remove the need to satisfy immigration requirements. Admission and visa sponsorship are connected stages but they are not the same decision.
Create the UCAS account with passport details
Use the applicant’s legal name, date of birth, nationality and contact information consistently. The name should match the passport that will be used for university records and the later visa application.
Where a single Nepali name, spelling variation or recent passport change creates uncertainty, ask UCAS and the university how to record it. Do not invent a surname or silently use different spellings across systems.
Complete every application section
The application collects personal details, nationality and residency information, education, employment, extra activities, course choices, the personal statement and a reference. Some questions support contextual admissions or student services.
Read each help note and answer accurately. Save progress regularly and keep a final copy. A polished personal statement cannot compensate for an incomplete education record or incorrect identity details.
Enter the complete education history
UCAS instructs applicants to include all previous and current qualifications from secondary education onwards, including completed, unsuccessful, retaken and pending results. International public examinations and English-language tests also belong in the relevant education record.
Use the qualification title printed on the official certificate or current course record. Do not enter an informal UK equivalence as though it were the awarded Nepali qualification.
Record pending results correctly
If final results have not been issued, record the qualification as pending using the available option. A referee or registered centre may then add predicted grades where the system and qualification permit.
Do not enter an estimated mark as a final result. When results arrive, follow UCAS or university instructions for official submission and preserve the original result documents.
Include English-language test information accurately
Enter IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or other requested results using the exact test name, date and scores. A university may accept a test for admission but apply different conditions for issuing the CAS or confirming Student visa English ability.
Check expiry, minimum overall score and component requirements with each course. Merging scores from separate test sittings is only valid where the university expressly permits it.
Use the five choices strategically
The 2027 undergraduate application fee allows up to five university or college choices. Build a balanced set that includes ambitious, realistic and safer academic options while keeping every choice suitable enough to attend.
Universities normally do not see the other choices in the initial application. Because one personal statement goes to all choices, closely related subjects usually produce a clearer application than unrelated course combinations.
One personal statement serves all choices
The personal statement should focus on the subject and the applicant’s preparation rather than praising one named university. Naming a single provider can weaken the fit for the other choices.
Where course titles vary, identify the common academic theme and show transferable evidence. Specific reading, projects, competitions, work exposure or independent learning are stronger than generic claims about passion.
The three-question personal statement format
For 2026 entry onwards, UCAS replaced one uninterrupted essay with three questions. Admissions teams still review the answers together as one personal statement.
The application keeps a total limit of 4,000 characters including spaces, and each answer must contain at least 350 characters. The three prompts cover motivation for the subject, how studies and qualifications prepared the applicant, and preparation through activities outside formal education.
Answer question one with a clear academic reason
Explain why the subject matters to the applicant and what they want to understand at university level. Connect the interest to a real book, problem, observation, project or experience rather than opening with a quotation.
Show development over time. A convincing answer explains what was learned and why that learning points toward the chosen discipline.
Answer question two with evidence from education
Select relevant subjects, assignments, laboratory work, research, presentations or academic skills. Describe the action and learning instead of repeating grades already visible elsewhere in the application.
Nepali curricula may be unfamiliar to an admissions reader, so briefly explain a significant project or subject connection in plain English without exaggerating its level.
Answer question three with preparation beyond school
Use employment, volunteering, caring responsibilities, online courses, reading, competitions, clubs, internships or personal projects when they demonstrate relevant preparation. The value comes from reflection, not from the prestige of the activity.
Explain what skill or insight was gained and how it will support study. Do not list certificates without connecting them to the course.
Use AI only as a support tool
UCAS warns applicants not to copy text or use AI to write the statement for them. The final answers must be truthful, personal and in the applicant’s own voice.
AI can help brainstorm questions, organise evidence or flag grammar for review, but every claim should come from real experience. Never submit invented projects, fabricated reading or text copied from another applicant.
Choose the right referee
An applicant normally needs one reference. Someone who knows the student academically, such as a teacher or counsellor, is usually suitable; a recent employer or professional contact may be accepted for an applicant who has been out of education.
Family members, friends, partners and former partners should not act as referees. Discuss the subject choices and relevant evidence with the referee because they may not see the full application or course list.
Independent applicants need extra lead time
A student applying independently enters the referee’s details and UCAS sends that person instructions. The application cannot be submitted until the reference has been completed and added, unless every chosen university has agreed that no reference is required.
Ask early, confirm the referee can write in English and monitor completion without asking to control their account. A rushed generic employment confirmation may not provide the academic context admissions teams need.
Prepare transcripts and translations
The main UCAS form records qualifications, but universities may separately request certificates, mark sheets, transcripts, passport evidence or English results through their portal. Provide complete, legible and authentic files.
Where a relied-on document is not in English, follow the provider’s certified-translation policy. Keep the original-language document with its translation and use consistent names and dates.
Understand the 2027 application fee
The UCAS undergraduate application fee for the 2027 cycle is GBP 34.50. It permits up to five university and college choices and includes access to the application, tracking, Extra and Clearing services.
This is separate from English tests, university deposits, visa fees, the immigration health surcharge and optional adviser charges. Pay only through the genuine UCAS application process.
Review the declaration before submitting
The UCAS declaration requires accurate and complete information. UCAS or providers may verify education, identity and uploaded evidence with awarding bodies and other organisations.
Check every qualification, including unsuccessful attempts and pending results. Proofread contact details, course codes, campus choices and year of entry, then retain the submitted version and payment receipt.
What happens after submission?
UCAS sends a welcome message and makes the application available for tracking. Universities can request documents, invite the applicant to an interview or test, make an offer, decline the application or withdraw a course.
Check the UCAS account and the email spam folder frequently. Respond through the instructed channel and never send confidential documents to an unverified messaging account.
Changing a choice within 14 days
UCAS normally lets an applicant substitute a university or college choice once within 14 days of the welcome email and before 30 June. A replacement submitted after its relevant deadline can still be treated as late.
Substitution ends consideration by the original choice and cannot simply be reversed. Contact the new provider first when the deadline has passed, and use the exact option in the UCAS account.
Offers, Extra and Clearing
Universities may issue conditional or unconditional offers. After all decisions arrive, the applicant can make the allowed firm and insurance replies by the displayed deadline.
Extra can help eligible applicants who used all five choices and hold no offer, while Clearing lists available places later in the cycle. These are structured UCAS routes, not reasons to abandon careful course and cost checks.
Connect admission planning to the Student visa
An offer is not permission to travel. The university must make the place unconditional and assign a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies before the student can use that CAS reference in a Student visa application.
Plan financial evidence, tuberculosis testing, English evidence and passport validity alongside admission. Use the UK CAS letter guide and UK Student visa document guide for the later stages.
Application scams and unsafe shortcuts
- Buying a personal statement copied from another student
- Letting an adviser keep the applicant’s login and email access
- Omitting failed, retaken or pending qualifications
- Paying a personal bank account for a supposed UCAS fee
- Applying to an unrelated course only because admission is promised
- Uploading edited marksheets or unverifiable certificates
- Believing an application submission guarantees an offer or visa

Common UCAS mistakes
- Choosing a course from ranking alone
- Entering an unofficial qualification equivalence
- Leaving pending or unsuccessful results out
- Writing one answer below 350 characters

- Missing messages in the UCAS account or spam folder
Frequently asked questions
How many UK universities can I choose through UCAS?
The 2027 undergraduate application permits up to five university or college choices. Build a balanced list and make sure every choice fits the same personal statement.
What is the main UCAS deadline for 2027 entry?
For most undergraduate courses it is 13 January 2027 at 18:00 UK time. Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine, dentistry and veterinary courses use the earlier 15 October 2026 deadline.
How has the UCAS personal statement changed?
Applicants answer three structured questions. Each answer needs at least 350 characters, while the combined limit remains 4,000 characters including spaces.
Can a Nepali student apply independently?
Yes. An independent applicant can create and complete the account, then invite an appropriate referee. The reference must normally be submitted before the application can be sent.
Does a UCAS offer allow me to apply for a Student visa?
No. The university must make the place unconditional and assign a valid CAS. The CAS reference, not the UCAS offer alone, is used for the Student visa application.
