Understand the Data Insights purpose

Official GMAT content says Data Insights measures the ability to analyse and interpret information and apply it to real-world business scenarios. It also tests digital and data literacy.

The section rewards decisions about relevant evidence, relationships and sufficiency rather than calculation alone.

Use the current section structure

Data Insights contains 20 questions in 45 minutes. It is one of three equally weighted sections in the current GMAT total score.

Twenty questions produce an average of 2 minutes 15 seconds each, but interactive and multi-source items need flexible pacing.

Learn all five question types

The official formats are Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation and Two-Part Analysis.

Study each interface and decision rule separately before mixing them in timed sets. Familiarity reduces avoidable navigation mistakes.

Master Data Sufficiency

Data Sufficiency asks whether the information is enough to solve a quantitative problem. Determine the exact target before testing statement one and statement two independently.

Do not solve further than necessary. A statement is sufficient when it produces one required answer, even if the value itself is inconvenient.

Use the five sufficiency choices

Memorise the standard logic: statement one only, statement two only, both together only, either alone or not enough together. Keep the tests independent until required.

A common error is carrying information from statement one into the statement-two-only test.

Check one value or a range

Official strategy advises deciding whether the problem permits only one value or a range. A yes-or-no target can be sufficient without a unique numerical value if the answer is always the same.

Test boundary cases and legal values instead of assuming positive integers unless the question states them.

Avoid geometric assumptions

Official guidance warns that figures are not necessarily drawn to scale. Use stated relationships and geometry rules, not visual appearance.

A line that looks perpendicular or two lengths that look equal provide no evidence unless marked or logically derived.

Master Multi-Source Reasoning

Multi-Source Reasoning presents information across text, tables, graphics or combinations. Build a short map of what each source contains and how they differ.

Some questions ask for discrepancies, inference or relevance. Read the task before deciding which source deserves attention.

Answer from supplied sources

Official strategy says all needed information is provided and outside subject knowledge should not influence the answer. Treat an unfamiliar industry as a data environment, not a knowledge test.

Select claims with the strongest support across the relevant source or sources and check dates and definitions before combining them.

Resolve source conflicts

If sources disagree, identify whether they measure different populations, periods, units or definitions. Do not average conflicting values without permission.

A discrepancy may itself be the information the question asks you to recognise.

Master Table Analysis

Table Analysis resembles spreadsheet work: sort and analyse rows to determine which statements meet stated conditions. First inspect headings, units and accompanying text.

Translate each yes-no or true-false statement into a precise filter, then test every required condition.

Sort with a purpose

Sort the column that exposes the answer, such as highest margin, earliest date or repeated category. Record what happened to row relationships after sorting.

Sorting is a tool, not a conclusion. Verify the statement against the correct rows and original definitions.

Master Graphics Interpretation

Inspect chart type, axis scales, labels, units, legend and any accompanying text. Official guidance specifically notes possible differences between graph units and text units.

Identify whether the task requires a value, trend, comparison, proportion or inference before touching the answer menu.

Read every drop-down option

Graphics Interpretation often uses drop-down completions. Official strategy recommends reviewing all available choices because they clarify the required precision and relationship.

Choose the option that makes the completed statement most accurate, not merely plausible.

Master Two-Part Analysis

Two-Part Analysis can be quantitative, verbal or a combination. Determine whether the two tasks are independent or whether one result constrains the other.

Review the entire answer grid before committing. Official guidance notes that the same option can sometimes satisfy both response columns.

Translate complex prompts

Write the two required outputs in compact form, identify shared constraints and discard information that does not affect either output.

For trade-offs, state what improves, what worsens and which condition defines an acceptable solution.

Integrate verbal and quantitative evidence

A calculation can be correct while the answer is wrong because a verbal condition was missed. Restate qualifiers, population and time window before operating on numbers.

Likewise, a textual inference may depend on a rate or comparison hidden in a table.

Track units and bases

Write the unit beside each number and convert only when needed. Distinguish percentage points from percentage change and rates from totals.

Check the denominator behind every ratio; changing the base can reverse an apparent trend.

Use the on-screen calculator wisely

The calculator is available in Data Insights, but availability does not make every item computational. Estimate first to detect an impossible entry or result.

Use the calculator for arithmetic that would consume attention, then confirm order of magnitude, units and rounding.

Do not use a calculator in Quant

The on-screen calculator belongs to Data Insights; official content says it is not available in Quantitative Reasoning.

Train separate habits so calculator dependence in DI does not weaken mental arithmetic required elsewhere.

Manage multi-part responses

Some Data Insights formats require more than one selection. Read how completeness is scored in the interface and verify every required column or statement.

A correct first component does not rescue an incomplete response, so use a final answer-format check.

Manage section pacing

Use time checkpoints after groups of questions, allowing variation for source-heavy items. Do not spend several minutes rebuilding a chart when elimination can settle the task.

Protect completion because official scoring applies a penalty for unanswered questions.

Use Question Review and Edit

After all items are answered, review as time permits and edit up to three responses. Bookmark a question for a specific source, unit or calculation concern.

Change only when a corrected reading or computation identifies the earlier error; general anxiety is not evidence.

Understand adaptive scoring

The section is computer adaptive, and scoring considers characteristics of correct and incorrect responses plus unanswered items. It is not a simple raw percentage.

Do not guess the difficulty level of the current question or let that guess change effort and pacing.

Build a Data Insights error log

Record type, source format, tested skill, missed unit or condition, selected trap, time, confidence and the first wrong decision.

Classify whether the error came from interpretation, sufficiency logic, arithmetic, interface handling or pacing.

Practise by question type

Start with focused sets to stabilise each method, then combine all five types. A mixed set reveals whether recognising the format is itself a weakness.

Re-solve reviewed questions from scratch before reading old notes, then use a fresh transfer problem.
