Arrive within the permitted window
A new F or M student cannot enter more than 30 days before the program start date shown on Form I-20. The airline ticket, campus arrival and housing date should fit this rule.
If delay threatens the start date, contact the DSO before travelling. Do not alter a date or rely on an agent’s assurance.
Carry documents where they are accessible
Keep the passport, visa and signed Form I-20 in hand luggage. Also carry the admission record, SEVIS fee receipt, financial evidence, school contact and U.S. address.
Do not place the only copies in checked baggage. Keep secure digital copies for recovery, not as an assumed replacement for originals.
Understand airline document checks
The airline checks documents for boarding, but it does not make the final U.S. admission decision. Arrive early enough to resolve a routine question.
Show the correct current Form I-20 and student visa. Do not present a cancelled school record by mistake.
Know that CBP decides admission
The Department of State explains that a visa allows travel to a U.S. port of entry. A Customs and Border Protection officer decides whether to admit the traveller.
Visa issuance and admission are therefore separate. Be prepared to establish the genuine temporary study purpose at inspection.
Answer primary inspection clearly
The officer may ask about the school, program, start date, funding, housing and purpose of travel. Answer truthfully and consistently with Form I-20 and the visa application.
Do not give a memorised speech. Ask for clarification if a question is not understood.
Understand additional inspection
A traveller may be directed for additional document or information review. This can take more time, so avoid a very short connection after the first U.S. arrival point.
Stay calm, follow instructions and provide only accurate information. A long wait does not by itself describe the final outcome.
Declare required items honestly
Follow CBP declarations for food, agriculture, medicines, currency and other regulated items. Read current official instructions before packing.
Never carry an unknown package for another person. When unsure whether an item must be declared, ask the officer.
Understand the first U.S. airport process
International inspection normally occurs at the first U.S. port of entry, even when the itinerary continues domestically. The traveller may need to collect and recheck baggage.
Follow the airline and airport instructions and allow enough connection time.
Check the electronic Form I-94
CBP has automated Form I-94 at air, sea and land ports, with paper forms used only in limited circumstances. The electronic record is the official arrival and admission record.
Retrieve it from the official I-94 site after arrival. Save a copy with the passport, visa and Form I-20 records.
Review every I-94 field
Check the legal name, passport information, most recent entry, class of admission and admit-until notation. A student should not assume an entry stamp alone contains every detail.
Use the record when the school, employer or agency asks for proof of status or arrival.
Correct an arrival error promptly
CBP says an error in a paper or electronic I-94 issued at entry can be addressed through the nearest Deferred Inspection office. Use the official CBP site to find the relevant location.
Keep the passport, visa, Form I-20, ticket and other evidence. Do not edit the electronic record or create a substitute document.
Reach the verified housing safely
Use the planned airport transport and confirm the driver or service. Keep the address and after-hours check-in instructions available offline.
If housing access fails, contact the verified housing office or school emergency channel rather than an unknown social-media contact.
Report to the school
EducationUSA advises new international students to report to the institution and attend international-student orientation. The DSO uses the check-in process to confirm arrival and explain status responsibilities.
Complete the institution’s required arrival form and provide the current U.S. address.
Attend both orientations
The international-student orientation covers immigration and campus procedures, while the general orientation covers academic systems and student life. Attend both when required.
Record the DSO, academic adviser, campus security, health and emergency contacts.
Maintain a full course of study
Register for the required course load and attend as instructed. Ask the DSO before dropping, withdrawing, taking leave or changing level.
Academic approval alone may not complete the immigration-status process.
Report address and personal changes
SEVP guidance says F-1 students must report required personal-information changes, including address changes, to the DSO within the applicable timeframe, commonly 10 days.
Use the school system and keep confirmation. The DSO updates SEVIS based on the student’s report.
Do not begin unauthorised work
Arrival in F-1 status does not authorise unrestricted employment. On-campus and off-campus opportunities have different conditions.
Talk to the DSO before starting any paid or unpaid activity that may qualify as work.
Protect documents after arrival
Store the passport, Form I-20, I-94 and fee records securely. Do not carry every original daily unless needed.
Keep encrypted copies and note expiry or travel-signature dates. Do not post document images publicly.
