Know the evaluation task
Official exam content says Critical Reasoning measures the ability to evaluate arguments and formulate or evaluate plans of action.
An evaluate question asks what information would help judge the argument’s strength. It does not ask you to decide the issue using outside knowledge.
Read the stem first
Follow official Verbal guidance by identifying exactly what the question asks before reading the stimulus. Look for useful to evaluate, helpful to know or similar language.
Do not confuse the task with strengthen or weaken. The correct evaluation question is useful because different answers could move support in different directions.
Identify the conclusion
Find the claim the author wants the evidence to establish. Preserve its population, time, comparison and level of certainty.
Evaluation is always relative to that conclusion. Information about a nearby concern may be interesting but logically irrelevant.
Identify the evidence
List what the author presents as support: a trend, survey, comparison, cost, observation or plan mechanism.
Accept the evidence as the working information. The key question is whether it sufficiently supports the conclusion.
Expose the reasoning gap
Ask how the evidence could be true while the conclusion is false. The unresolved issue often identifies what must be evaluated.
State one or two vulnerabilities before reading choices, but remain open to another central gap revealed by an option.
Use the opposite-results test
Imagine one plausible answer to the proposed evaluation question, then its meaningful opposite. Ask how each result affects the conclusion.
A strong evaluation choice often strengthens under one result and weakens under the other. If both results leave support unchanged, the information is not useful.
Do not answer the evaluation question
You are choosing which information matters, not deciding which factual result is true. The stimulus usually does not supply that result.
An option can be correct even when you cannot predict its answer. Its value comes from the difference the answer would make.
Distinguish evaluate from strengthen
A strengthener provides a favourable fact. An evaluate option identifies an uncertainty whose positive and negative outcomes would affect support differently.
If the option matters only under one answer while the opposite has no effect, compare carefully; a two-direction impact is usually clearer evaluation evidence.
Distinguish evaluate from weaken
A weakener supplies damaging information. An evaluation question can reveal either damage or support depending on what is learned.
Do not reject an option because one possible answer helps the argument. Test both directions.
Evaluate causal arguments
Ask about alternative causes, reverse causation, timing and whether the effect occurs without the proposed cause.
For example, learning whether another factor changed at the same time could support the causal claim if no or weaken it if yes.
Evaluate plans and proposals
Identify the action, target response, objective and possible barrier. Ask whether the action can be implemented and whether it produces the intended behaviour.
Useful information may concern compliance, capacity, side effects or a condition necessary for the mechanism.
Evaluate surveys
Ask who was sampled, how participants were selected, response rates and whether questions measured the conclusion’s actual issue.
A representative method strengthens confidence in generalisation; a biased method weakens it. The sampling question is therefore useful.
Evaluate comparisons
Determine whether groups, products or periods differ in another relevant way. The conclusion may attribute a result to the wrong difference.
Useful information reveals whether the comparison holds on the measure that matters or whether a confound explains the gap.
Evaluate forecasts
A forecast assumes relevant future conditions will resemble the evidence period. Ask about market, policy, population or technology changes tied to the prediction.
The information must concern a condition that can materially alter the projected outcome, not any possible future event.
Evaluate statistical claims
Check denominators, sample size, distribution, averages, rates and definitions. A headline percentage may hide a changing base.
Ask what numerical fact would determine whether the evidence really represents the conclusion’s quantity.
Evaluate cost-benefit claims
Identify all costs and benefits included in the conclusion, the relevant time horizon and who bears them.
A useful question asks about an omitted component large enough to change the net comparison. A small unrelated cost may not matter.
Evaluate implementation
A proposed policy may look effective in theory but depend on staff, technology, authority, timing or participation.
Ask whether the required implementation condition exists. Opposite answers should change confidence in the plan.
Evaluate behaviour response
Plans often assume people will respond as intended rather than avoid, substitute or adapt to the rule.
Information about likely response is useful when that behaviour directly determines whether the objective is achieved.
Evaluate alternative explanations
When several causes could produce the same observation, ask for evidence that distinguishes them.
A question that both explanations predict the same way has little diagnostic value. Prefer information producing different expectations.
Evaluate baseline conditions
A change or comparison may depend on different starting points. Ask whether the baseline makes the observed improvement meaningful.
Opposite baseline answers should alter the conclusion rather than merely add background.
Evaluate time periods
Check whether evidence and conclusion use comparable periods, seasonal conditions and measurement windows.
A timing question is useful when one answer makes the evidence representative and the other reveals a temporary distortion.
Evaluate definitions
Ask whether key terms are measured consistently across evidence and conclusion. A changed definition can create an artificial trend.
The correct option should connect the definition issue to the claimed result, not simply request more description.
Match scope exactly
Compare population, location, product, time and outcome. An option about one subgroup may not evaluate a conclusion about everyone.
A broad question can also be inefficient if only one narrow condition controls the argument.
Check material size
Some information affects the conclusion only if the magnitude is large enough. Ask whether the option establishes a difference that could change the decision.
Do not assume an unspecified small effect is decisive. Use quantities and wording provided.
Reject one-sided trivia
An option can share the topic and still leave the evidence-conclusion link unchanged under every plausible answer.
Apply the opposite-results test. If neither result matters, eliminate it regardless of how informative it sounds.
Reject questions already answered
If the stimulus explicitly establishes the information, asking it again adds no new ability to evaluate the argument.
Confirm that the proposed uncertainty is genuinely unresolved and relevant.
Reject questions about the wrong goal
A plan may have several benefits, but the conclusion usually names one objective. Information about another objective may not evaluate the stated claim.
Keep the test tied to what the author concluded, not what you think the policy should achieve.
Reject emotional importance
A safety, fairness or financial concern can feel important while having no logical effect on the conclusion being evaluated.
Ethical weight and evidentiary usefulness are different. Use the argument’s stated reasoning.
Avoid outside knowledge
Official guidance says it is unnecessary to judge the real-world truth of facts in Critical Reasoning. Work with the stimulus and logical possibilities.
Personal knowledge can cause you to answer an option instead of testing whether its answer would matter.
Use official questions for calibration

The current exam permits bookmarking, reviewing as many questions as time allows and editing up to three answers after completing the section.
