Start with the current test structure

Before choosing a book or course, confirm the live GRE structure. The current General Test takes about 1 hour 58 minutes and includes one Issue essay, two Verbal sections and two Quant sections.

Reject study plans built around two essays, 20-question sections or a long scheduled break. Older authentic questions can still teach formats, but old timing must be labelled.

Use an official-first source hierarchy

Use ETS structure pages, directions, sample questions, Math Review, Math Conventions, essay pool, POWERPREP and official books as the reference layer.

Use third-party lessons only to explain a gap or supply extra drills. When a rule conflicts, verify it against the current ETS source.

Create a resource inventory

List every material you already own with edition, format, question source, section coverage, explanations, current-timing accuracy and completion status.

Mark each item learn, drill, simulate, review or archive. This prevents duplicate purchases and accidental reuse of a fresh test.

Separate authentic questions from explanations

An official question best represents GRE wording and task design. A clear third-party explanation may still help you learn a concept.

Record the origin of the question and explanation separately. Do not call an unofficial mock “official-style” evidence.

Learn Verbal formats from official examples

Build methods only after understanding what each response type requires. Format mistakes cannot be repaired by vocabulary alone.

Use official Verbal practice books

ETS sells an official Verbal Reasoning practice volume with authentic questions, explanations and guidance. Check the current edition before purchase.

Divide questions into learning sets, mixed untimed sets and timed sets. Do not consume the whole book without review.

Build vocabulary from context

Use a frequency-based list as a starting point, then attach meaning, contrast, register, collocation and an original sentence. Review words inside Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence logic.

A huge flashcard count is not proof of usable vocabulary. Track whether a word improves evidence-based decisions.

Use the free Math Review

The ETS Math Review covers arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis concepts that may appear on the GRE.

Use its chapters diagnostically. Skip stable areas after a short check and spend time where errors show a real concept gap.

Use Math Conventions

GRE Math Conventions explain notation, figures, number assumptions and other test-specific interpretation rules.

Read them before treating a diagram or symbol like a textbook convention. Add uncertain rules to your error log.

Use official Quant practice books

ETS offers a Quantitative Reasoning practice volume with authentic questions, explanations and Math Review content. Verify the live edition.

Tag each question by content and response type so practice reveals whether a problem is conceptual or procedural.

Practise every Quant response type

Include Quantitative Comparison, single-answer and multiple-answer multiple choice, Numeric Entry and data interpretation.

A candidate strong in algebra can still lose points through variable-case analysis, selection-count mistakes or incorrect numeric format.

Use the official essay topic pool

ETS publishes the pool of Analyze an Issue topics. Use it to practise task interpretation, position, reasons, examples, organisation and timed revision.

Do not memorise complete essays. Prepare a repeatable reasoning and drafting process.

Use official scoring guides

Compare practice essays with the current scoring guide, score-level descriptions, sample responses and reader commentary.

Assess instruction fulfilment, development, coherence, language control and errors that affect clarity. A template alone cannot supply analysis.

Understand POWERPREP’s role

Protect fresh official tests

Make an inventory of unused, completed, reviewed and repeated POWERPREP forms. Assign each fresh test a purpose such as baseline, progress check or final readiness.

Do not open a new form until the previous one is fully reviewed and priority weaknesses have been repaired.

ETS may offer paid POWERPREP PLUS forms with official timed questions and additional feedback or explanations. Product features and prices can change.

Check the live comparison before buying. A paid test is most useful when scheduled as a fresh measurement, not casual daily practice.

Use the Official Guide strategically

The Official Guide provides authentic questions, strategies, essay material and practice tests. Check which edition and test timing its full tests represent.

Use older full tests for question practice when ETS says the types remain relevant, but simulate the current test with current POWERPREP timing.

Do not buy every resource at once

Begin with free official material and a diagnostic. Buy only when a specific gap requires more authentic questions, explanations or fresh simulation.

Unused material creates cost and choice overload. A completed review cycle is more valuable than another unopened book.

Evaluate third-party books

Check publication date, current structure, author expertise, question realism, explanation quality, error reporting and sample access.

Use unofficial questions for skill practice, not score prediction. Watch for vocabulary trivia or advanced mathematics beyond the test purpose.

Evaluate courses and tutors

Ask how the service diagnoses weaknesses, teaches official formats, reviews work, measures progress and updates for current GRE rules.

Avoid guarantees, hidden answer banks or pressure to purchase before a diagnostic. Keep account credentials private.

Use accessible formats when needed

ETS provides preparation materials and POWERPREP accommodations or accessible formats for approved testing needs.

Practise only with formats and settings relevant to the accommodations you may use. Follow the official approval process early.

Build a four-phase material sequence

Use orientation, targeted learning, mixed timed application and full simulation. Assign each resource to one phase.

Moving too early to full tests can hide basic gaps, while staying in untimed lessons can avoid the execution demands of the exam.

Phase one: learn the interface and formats

Read the current structure, directions and examples. Use a preview or untimed official experience to learn navigation, mark/review and calculator tools.

Record every interface uncertainty and resolve it before timed measurement.

Phase two: repair content and method

Use Math Review, vocabulary work, strategy lessons and small official sets for each priority weakness.

Write a rule, method and transfer question for every correction. Re-solve later without notes.

Phase three: use mixed timed sets

Combine formats and content under section-like timing. Record checkpoints, skipped items, changed answers and unanswered questions.

Mixed sets show whether a learned method survives switching and time pressure.

Phase four: simulate and review

Use a fresh official full-length form under realistic conditions, including the essay and current no-break design.

Review wrong, guessed, slow and changed answers before setting the next study block.

Build an error log

Record source, question, format, content, result, time, confidence, first failed decision, correction and transfer test.

Use categories such as knowledge, translation, evidence, cases, response format, calculator, pacing and review behaviour.

Review correct but unstable answers

A guessed, low-confidence or unusually slow correct answer can fail on a new question. Add it to the log.

Write the shortest reliable method and test it on changed material.

Schedule spaced review

Revisit corrected ideas after increasing intervals and in mixed contexts. Use active recall before reopening the explanation.

Track transfer, not the number of times a page was read.

Use a weekly material budget

Allocate time among learning, deliberate drills, mixed timing, review and recovery. Protect enough review time after every practice set.

Count completed corrections rather than pages, videos or questions alone.

Build a financial budget

List registration, score reports, books, paid tests, courses, internet, travel and possible retake costs in current currency.

Verify prices on official pages. Prioritise the appointment, reliable access and materials tied to diagnosed needs.

Avoid score inflation from repeated material

Repeated questions can rehearse methods but memory changes performance. Label repeats and do not treat their scores as fresh predictions.

Use unseen official material for major diagnostic decisions whenever possible.

Use a resource stop rule

Do not add a new resource until you can state the gap, why current material cannot solve it and how the new item will be scheduled.

Archive resources that duplicate coverage or use obsolete directions.

Set a readiness rule

Require a stable target range across fresh official tests, acceptable section pacing and completed review of high-impact errors.

Readiness is documented performance, not finishing every available book.
